This is part of the anti-savior theme. He could’ve made different decisions to make that future a reality, but the decisions he did make resulted in the death of someone who could’ve been a great friend. Sorry, Grace. I did not get any white savior vibes from Dune Part One. I think “nobody seems to care” because frankly there wasn’t any of that in the movie. For the most part, only members of House of Atreides died for Paul. While some of the Fremen see him as a Messiah, many have their doubts (Chani doesn’t believe it herself). Other than Kynes, pretty much no Fremen die for him. And Paul killing one of the Fremen (Jamis) is not very white savior of him. Dune also goes against the white savior trope by having Paul learn from the Fremen rather than vice versa. He’s learning and bettering himself through their power and knowledge, while his presence only complicates their lives.

08:20 Paul’s vision of Jamis teaching him the way of dessert means his foresight of the future isn’t fixed, he is in some degree free to choose his destiny. Killing of Jamis signified the end of Paul’s innocence, and prepped him as an adult to choose the dark path of vengeance, knowing countless people could perish in his holy war. Thus it was a good place to end part one, as Paul completed his first arc as a matured character.

Regarding the door and Duncan's sacrifice: The Sardaukar can blast right through the door. The only way to buy time was to kill as many as possible. It's Paul's fault that he waited too long. It's not that no one liked the Duke Atreides. In fact, it is the opposite. People liked him as a leader in the Landsraad because he was noble, honorable, and honest. It's that they absolutely fear the emperor. Especially his Sardaukar troops, who are considered the strongest military force in the galaxy.

The White savior element didn't bother me because the side characters didn't believe he was one and he technically didn't save anyone so it wasn't really present to me. Also, the Bene Gesserit set the myth up. They were subtle with setting up a few moments of his potential power. I'd describe it as a mix between Rogue Squadron and Game of Thrones. Also, Momoa's character is a sword master but they didn't really elaborate on that. I was hoping for a bigger action scene at the end but I guess I'll wait for the second part. Villeneuve can maybe make a deal that he'll do 2 more movies if WB helps support his next movie projects like Nolan did, I think. They need to hang onto good talent.

Most of the internet and the previous movie has the opposite viewpoint of the galactic politics. The theories are that the Emperor is fearful of Duke Leto as the Duke is TOO popular with the other noble houses. That Leto could eventually lead the other houses in rebellion against the Emperor. Also the Atreides troops were becoming too effective, eventually competing too well with the Sardaukar. None of the other houses came to their aid as the Emperor and the Baron are acting in a SECRET plan. The Harkonnen are the traditional enemies of the Atreides, so the suspicions of the other houses aren't raised when the Harkonnen retaliate against the Atreides for losing ownership of Arrakis. Meaning, the Emperor can appear as an innocent bystander when this clan rivalry flames up into genocide. The Baron assumes total annihilation of all Atreides people will hide the fact that some Sardaukar troops showed up in the battles.

I won't lie, Dune is based on a "white savior complex", but to simply call it that and move on misses the meaning in the story.... Dune is the original "white savior" sci-fi story that many other franchises borrowed from (Star Wars, Avatar, etc.). However Dune goes FAR DEEPER than these other stories which is why it takes multiple movies to explain. A big part of Dune at it's core is a story about colonialism and imperialism and how centuries of exploitation makes humanity weak. So if you take out the "white savior complex" part of the story, you lose a lot of the meaning behind Dune.

Yup, after reading some of the material and watching the film I see where George Lucas got the Stars Wars idea.

The Duke was a good leader and well liked. That made him a big threat to the Emperor.

She is way too stuck on skin color in her review like so many people. I literally didn't and still don't care about any of that watching the movie. I loved the whole experience watching it.
@Dularr3 жыл бұрын
I did find the movie completed the story. The story was about Paul deciding his path. The "Old Duke" path was through acts of bravery and machismo. Symbolized through bull fighting. Duke Leto path was through justice and honor. Symbolized through his popularity with the other houses. Paul decided his path at the end of the movie. With Paul deciding his path will be blood and death. (plenty of death)

They specifically say why the Emperor wants them dead. It's because the Duke was so loved and respected he was starting to overshadow the emperor.

If they don't go up through God Emperor of Dune, Jason Momoa's character will be wasted.

Those, who push the view of identity politics in all areas of life, are the ones that judge others by their race rather than their character.
@bryanreynolds87213 жыл бұрын
My biggest problem with this movie is they didn't do a good enough job explaining why the emperor would join forces with House Harkonnen to destroy the Atreides and explaining the mentats. If you have not read the books then you don't know that the emperor hates Leto because he's popular with most of the other houses because of his honor and integrity, qualities neither the emperor or the baron have. Leaving that out will probably confuse people who haven't read the books because, like you said in your review, they don't know why these two forces hate them so much. Other than that, as a fan of Dune, i loved this movie.
@XManium3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the one thing the Sci-Fi Channel version did better than this version was to turn the Emperor's daughter into a major character and use her to provide exposition on the underlying politics.
@thegrandpotato60143 жыл бұрын
Wasn’t that explained in the second half of the book ?
@XManium3 жыл бұрын
It was explained in the first half, mostly through internal dialogue. Frank Herbert was notorious for walking the reader through the thought processes of every character.

I'm asian and I thought I saw it there, and cringed at first at the end. But then I learned there's more to this savior thing, so it became way more palatable. I appreciate Grace when she's pushing boundaries for a more inclusive media.

I saw the film at the exact theater you mentioned in Lincoln Square this evening, (it’s my go to theater), and I haven’t seen such a packed theater since Endgame. EVERY SINGLE SEAT was occupied!

I agree the human computers (Hawat and De Vries) character development were sacrificed in this film. Both had more to do in the novel.

I hope the film does well; it would be nice to see it succeed for everyone involved. As an aside, I note this with respect Grace: your rigorous commentaries concerning race, genders and LGBTQ2+ people, while I believe are well-intentioned, have become predictable and are veering dangerously close to pandering; be careful.
@Yoke103HD3 жыл бұрын
It's been pandering for almost 2 years now. I try to ignore the social justice side because I like her insider knowledge. If not for the extra info she provides, I would never watch her content because I would always be bitter with no payoff.

If a movie is able to apeal to a wide range of audiences, then more money will be made. If more money is made, then that movie will get sequels.

At the end of the movie, Rebecca Ferguson smiles when Zendaya says “this is just the beginning” and then when no one is looking she quickly drops the smile and has a sinister and determined expression. I feel like this is foreshadowing that she is going to betray the Fremon. Really hoping for a sequel 🤞🏻
@ronwells81863 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely not what it’s foreshadowing. It’s better than that.

Ooo I’m excited to hear that. I might attempt reading the book bc idk if I can wait
@davidneil62063 жыл бұрын
Its my understanding that the cultures in Dune are supposed to be strange yet slightly familiar. This gives them a unique feel. The Fremen in particular are supposed to be the most foreign to the audience. In the book, they continue to be more and more unfamiliar and incompatible with our own understandings and philosophies.

I haven't read the books and its obvious that paul won't be a typical savior character. Such a dumb criticism
@timpower49223 жыл бұрын
Grace, god dammit. Your first two points are ridiculous. 1. Of course it was an abrupt ending. The story is huge. 2. The book was published in 1965. It doesn’t have a 2021 agenda. Can’t we just have something nice?
@MaxxRemKing13 жыл бұрын
No Tim we can't because everything has to be watered down, "race bent" and explained in detail because the audience can't chew and think at the same time. If the Dune box office holds it will be a miracle.

I really enjoyed the movie. Highly entertaining, can’t wait for part 2. I saw it on HBO Max, but will se it on IMAX this weekend. It was quite the spectacle. I will say the ending for me was fine, since in the title It said part one. I kind of figured there would be a part 2.

Dune is basically an arthouse film with a multi-million dollar budget. I loved it so much but I don't know how that will fare with general audiences.
