I have war of the ring and haven’t played it yet. I’m also a bigger fan of the LoTR IP. This looks like a more modern version which makes it tempting, but do you see the learning curve and setup being any easier than WoTR?

Much easier learning curve and easier (more variable) setup! I agree, I like the LotR IP wayyy more than Dune… but this game is fantastic. Easier to teach and table with fun gameplay.

In the Dune Universe there is no "good" side. Beside this, great video of one of the best boardgames of that style.

Great review. Just wonder how would you rate this over Star wars Rebellion and the war of the ring in terms of strategy depth and complexity?

Strictly comparing base games only: In terms of strategy, I’d rank WotR the highest followed closely by Dune. The amounts of strings you can pull at different moments and with various units among multiple sections of the map makes WotR and Dune more strategically involved. For depth, I’d give the nod to Dune. I feel there’s a lot more exploration within the game on win conditions and how to best achieve them. Rebellion is the least complex but the complexity of Dune isn’t too much more. WotR is the most complex I’d say due to units having much more different abilities to remember and work with.

@talkingcardboard Thank you Cory for taking the time to write up a response, it helped me alot. It's good to know it has not lost alot of depth despite being streamlined. Compared to wotr

Do you see any of the upcoming or already released expansions being necessary to this game? I own but havn’t played yet…
@talkingcardboard5 ай бұрын
I don’t think any expansion for this game is necessary; already a fantastic game as it is. Having said that, I have not yet played any of the expansion content so not sure if gameplay would benefit or be elevated by adding expansions… I’m curious to try them out sometime though. I hear the ‘Spacing Guild’ expansion is fairly straight forward and easy to integrate. The new ‘Desert War’ expansion that is coming soon has me intrigued… having other unit types could keep the game fresh and be an interesting way to play with more experienced gamers. I love how streamlined the base game is though. I’d hate to sour a good thing by injecting complexity just for complexity’s sake.

@@talkingcardboard Good to hear thoughts. I’ve been leaning this way more and more. Enjoy and deepen a base experience when it already works. Often modules and other things just aren’t worth the effort. Can’t wait to table and glad to watch your walk through.

Thanks for the great content. If I can own only one dune game, should I get this or Uprising? player count for me is usually 1-3 players.
@talkingcardboard5 ай бұрын
Ooo that’s tough to say; both games are so different! My opinion is that Dune:WfA is best at 2p… I would not solo it. For all the other player counts, Dune Uprising will sing. DU has an easier 1p rule set to navigate, and is fantastic at 3p-4p. Having said all that, if you primarily play games at 2p, then Dune:WfA is the way to go.

I played war of the Ring once and found there was way too much luck with dice and card draws. Everybody pushes it as some great strategic game, but the fact I won as the hobbits without even going to Mount doom proves this. Sauron player rolled badly many many times.
