The writers of Game of Thrones and Discworld preferred GURPS over other RPG systems, so it really is the ideal RPG system for free-thinking, creative people who don't want to be bound by D&D's limited mythos

Gurps is very very hard to learn. on the other hand D&D is possible to teach to everyone, because everyone knows what means thac0 and armor class... D&D concepts and mechanical system are so good so good, then WoTC even preferred to change it all and develop D20 system... Storytelling / White Wolf has a great mechanic, mainly for starters, but after you've read a bunch of texts and created the character... then You will not perform any spectacular action (you will only talk, and talk, and talk and much more talk... foreverly talk) and that is a sad thing mainly for Vampire... well You can use some Street Fighter or Werewolf, but the game will be highly unbalanced; then the dm/gm/etc... will forbid any others and You will only have stupid vampires talking and talking and talking... D&D has the same amount of rules as it has Gurps; for example concise rules about hide and conceal, about targeting at a specifically thing and so on... the main difference is.. DMs different from GMs are used to simply ignore all (superficial) rules and only try the basic ones. I can create any campaign setting, any time (long past, long future and so on..) at any of the great rpg scenarios... Spacial and futuristic for D&D; HeroQuest conversion for Gurps; past or present campaign for Storytelling and so on...

GENERICS SYSTEMS are great... It could be GURPS or Cypher system or Cortex Prime! I personnaly use BRP and Savage worlds for my go to games. These are excellent generic systems too

I don't get what you are talking about... There is NO other system that has so many licensed IPs as GURPS does! Humanx, Discworld, Witch World, Riverworld, Conan, Traveler, Transhuman Space, Uplift, Casey and Andy & Girl Genius (two web-comic), Prime Directive (Star Trek), Vorkosigan Saga, Norðlond Saga, Autoduel (Car Wars board game), Scarlet Pimpernel, Prisoner, Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, Hellboy, War Against the Chtorr, Horseclans, Lensman, New Sun, Planet Krishna, Planet of Adventure, Alpha Centauri & Myth (two computer game adaptations), Wild Cards, Blue Planet, Bunnies & Burrows (based on Watership Down), Castle Falkenstein, Conspiracy X, In Nomine, Ogre, Mage: The Ascension, Deadlands, Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse; not to mention the 60 or so other background sourcebooks that describe settings of all forms and variations,, from mecha to historic samurai, from stone age to supers,, from psionic horror to furry cuteness, from voodoo to martial arts. NO other system EVER has so many different IPs!

There used to be a mess of them but Steve Jackson moved away from licensed properties. Honestly I think GURPS is better for not trying to tell other people's stories. I'd much rather see other thematic boxes like Action! or After the End.

I got tired of learning 10+ rule systems for all the genres I wanted to play. In the long run it was cheaper to just play GURPS as my go to system then own an entire library of RPG books

Funny thing for me is that I like a lot of things about a standard D&D setting (humans elves and dwarves as heroes, skeletons orcs and dragons as bad guys, wizards and warriors on both sides) but the things I always liked _least_ about D&D were two things the default GURPS ruleset does by default that Dungeon Fantasy aggressively changes to be more D&D-like: - Wizards not being able to learn healing spells because "that's a Cleric thing" (Dungeon Fantasy is at least consistent about this rather than saying this and then giving it to the Bard and Druid as well) - Wizards and Clerics using basically the same magic system, rather than divine powers being mechanically meaningfully different from arcane powers - --Druids, Barbarians, and Monks/Martial Artists existing at all-- - Classes/Templates enforcing "niche protection" instead of free form purchase for designing characters, like good warrior-mages and the like. My favorite characters are and always have been jack of all trades types. My favorite base D&D classes are Ranger, Paladin, Bard, and Cleric for both flavor and mechanics reasons.

I have an old GURPS guide from back in the 90s and it has character sheet pages we just put in the copier and made as many as we needed. Wouldn't one of those books have copyable pages included?

Just checked with my PDF version, there is a 2 page character sheet at the back of the adventurers book with two extra pages for notes and additional spells/skills (if a PC has a lot of those)

They normally even have a little notice on the character sheet giving specific permission to make photocopies for personal use. Me, I like writing out my GURPS characters on a standard notebook (wide ruled for simple characters, college ruled for main characters) - I don't like the way the official 4th edition character sheet is laid out.

It's not a great size for copying but the paperback bind makes it easy enough. Really I think they built that box understanding that we live in an era where just about everyone has internet access and a printer.

@UTubeFekUrself My primary OC (who serves as my avatar on many websites, including this one) can be described as a superhero, though he'd need a ridiculously high power total to actually be represented. Basically, imagine of a kaiju like Godzilla was also the Sorcerer Supreme in terms of magical ability and had the attitude of brutal but effective justice that The Punisher does.

I'm a bit more put off that they didn't have a trifold cardboard GM screen in a $60 box. Dice and character sheets are easy to manage but GURPS is a pretty detailed game so having some easy references would help a new GM a lot.

late, but. The checks aren't complex. What might be complex is actually calculating the number needed to roll or under - but this is often done beforehand and written on the character sheet anyway

I would hope for at least six - three for the GM and another three for the minimum one other player. Of course most players can also bring their own dice, and this is the most common type. (I've bought them ten for a dollar at times depending on where I was, found ones randomly discarded by the sidewalk, that sort of thing).

Who's short on D6s? It's not like math rocks where you have to go to a hobby store to buy them. Swag has a shelf behind him loaded with them, my car probably has 8d6 floating around. I can't figure many people who would buy an RPG are struggling to find D6's.

I'll have to go through the Exploits myself, but it looks like it might be a little more complicated than I had desired for gaming with younger players. The thing about D&D 5th, also, is that you can buy the Starter box, with a full set of dice and pregens, and a fairly decent length campaign, for $20, and download slightly less complete versions of the rulebooks for free to expand beyond that, making the $150 investment in the three core books not strictly necessary. In fact, if you have experience, you can play using only the free rules.
@ribbitribbit4707
@ribbitribbit4707 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true. GURPS also has free rules you can download. The value of the 5e starter set is really high though. I am enjoying Dungeon Fantasy very much though. This set was my first foray into GURPS and I am thinking about investing into the full game.
@michaelwolf8690
@michaelwolf8690 5 жыл бұрын
The difference between Dungeon fantasy and the D&D 5th ed Starter is that the D&D box is an adventure in a box. It has the rules to essentially run the included adventure and probably what you need to wing some other stuff, but more powerful magics or complicated adventuring or fighting feats or monster stats that aren't in the starter adventure are missing. Dungeon Fantasy is basically everything you could ask for to run a D&D style campaign with the GURPS engine. It's not a dumbed-down version of the rules and it is optimized to Dungeon Hack playstyle. The rules aren't that complicated, certainly comparable to 5th ed D&D and likely easier because of repetition of mechanics. It's 3d6, roll under skill with penalties or bonuses for just about everything you do. But for that same amount of complexity and detail you get a system that much more accurately portrays combat, injury, effects of fatigue/sleep/hunger, and builds a framework for not just combat, but professional skills, robust systems for social play, stealth and perception rules that leverage lighting, and line-of-sight and exhaustive supplemental resources. I wouldn't say it's the best role-playing mechanics or even the best at any given thing but it's a very well-balanced, meticulous researched and revised, platform of mechanics that suits a wide variety of different game settings.

@RoninCatholic
@RoninCatholic 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kunstdesfechtens I deeply disagree. I've never personally known anyone shallow enough to need role-models or playing pieces in a game to look like himself in order to identify them. If I set a game in medieval or warring states era Japan I'm not going to allow any player characters who aren't Japanese, if I set it in pre British expansion Australia all the player characters and NPCs are going to be Australian aborigines, and if I set it in an original fantasy world based primarily on one of those I'll apply the same restrictions for aesthetic purposes. Forcing all modern fantasy to adhere to exactly the same demographics as modern-day United States without an in-universe history supporting both the initial diversification and then a later partial melting pot reintegration violates my suspension of disbelief. Forcing literally all fantasy cultures to have modern first-world attitudes towards gender roles is likewise frustrating. Diversity sometimes subtracts value rather than adding it. It's not always wrong and it's even something I generally like, but it's not something necessary to do as often as it is.
