Dungeon! An "adventure board game" first released in 1975 is a classic game that is still in print today. I think it's worth a play, and is a great addition to any game collection. In this video I "unbox" my 1981 copy.

Well yeah Good old no longer affordable HeroeQeust . Luckily i got myself the master edition + all 4 european released expansion :) then we got StarQuest, Claymorsage. There was even a D&D Board game with 2 Expansions. We also got a couple of nice newer games Like Decent / Decent second edition and Dungeon Saga. ( Dungeon Saga comes in nice boxes that looks like old books.)

One of the last covers that I painted for TSR back in 1996 before I parted ways with them to go back into video games was a cover for a new version Dungeon! Sadly, TSR never made that version and the art was never used. But you can see it here on my studio FB page - facebook.com/DragongirlStudios/photos/a.457397244325479/457398910991979/?type=3&theater

Lots of D&D stuff found it's way to Goodwill. I bought the two book there under the Dracula box ( Players and DM's guide) at a Goodwill in about 1989 for an American quarter each. They still have the little blue price tag sticker on them to this day.

Hero Quest (EU edition) is the true apex of playability! I was surprised to find out that many people consider it a gateway into D&D-style TTRPG because it's a near-perfect board game on it's own right. I also love the Japanese version which has more than just a few subtle differences. The best thing about Hero Quest is that MB gave permission to publish all game material and it's quite easy to find, including the miniatures if you own a 3d printer. There's still a thriving community for this game.

The version I had was from the late 80's/super early 90's and was titled, "The New Dungeon!" I remember specifically the werewolf card depicts it in tiny blue underpants and the game having actual miniatures, in purple plastic, to represent the players. It got lost at some point and I've been dying to grab another copy ever since. Good to know it's still in print!

I love this game! I found a copy just like this one several years ago while digging through my grandmother's storage shed. It's a ton of fun as is and very open to customized house rules. My last group played it as a mish-mash of the original rules and Pathfinder. Glad to see it getting some attention!

I bought a modern version of this game a few years ago, and i absolutely love it. A no-nonsense dungeon crawl game with lots of loot and monsters. I like to make variations of the game by using my own minis, as well as using the board for a specific setting like, entering the underground cathedral to find a hidden artifact etc. Would recommend to anyone. I wish they would make a sci-fi version of this game too

You are not a loser. This is greatness and very underrated. It is a difficult check to beat Superheroin, Wolfman, and suicide Skeleton but The Classic Dungeon (two versions after this and the last TSR, optional metal minis, extra classes, Parkinson art, etc) is the best version of the game over all. WotC went in the wrong direction with McDuck's little version of Blackmoor. I have been cleaning up the expanded version I made, based on years of playing this with my nephews, to print out and play as I recently purchased this 1981 version myself. Complete with the smoke smell of my youth--dragons stink, but not as much as rabbits!

Loved seeing this! It brought me right back to my childhood. We had the 1981 version and I played it when I was 6 or 7 years old. I always loved it but my family didn’t really enjoy the gameplay. It stayed in my toy box but I always revisited it. My parents then bought my brother and me the red box basic D&D set and we played that as a family a few times but I think it was less of a family game and more of a friends game. It was a few years later when we moved to a new town and found friends that were playing AD&D and we got involved with that. I also spent hours and hours with friends playing early computer games both on my Apple IIc and his Commodore 64. Those included The Bard’s Tale, Wizardry, Might & Magic, Ultima, oh and my favorite was Below the Root. I wish I could find THOSE games! Great video.

I love the old copy of Dungeon that you have. I've wanted that copy since I was a kid. The art on the cover was a big reason for it. Being into the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon back in the 80's as well as playing D&D with friends that had the books, this box screamed at me every time I saw it. Always loved fantasy stuff back then. I was huge into He-Man and still collect He-Man stuff. I need to hunt up a copy similar to yours. I started collecting older D&D stuff when I got into 5th ed. At first to have more source material. But I also decided it would look great in my game room. I was going to say HeroQuest as a suggestion, right up till you mentioned it. And yes, it has gotten to be insanely priced. I am lucky to have my set from childhood as well as a second base set and one of the expansions. Just missing a couple boxes. But, another idea I had. A while back I got a copy of the old Dungeons and Dragons electronic board game. Those can be grabbed at reasonable prices at times and it might be fun to review.

Also, I would say talisman and Warhammer Quest. But those are probably getting out of hand to buy as well. Maybe DragonStrike from TSR back in the 90's? That one doesn't go horribly high. It's another that I have come close to buying.

So, I got a copy of Dungeon. The same art as the one you have. Just got it in the mail today. Even got a bonus with it. The rule book for 3rd ed basic D&D, printed in 1979. Got what I felt was a great deal. But I still need to check and see if it has all of the pieces it's supposed to have with it. I'm pretty sure it has all of it's tokens/pawns and the dice are there. Not sure if all the cards are there. Is there anywhere online that gives a list of what should be in there?

I have the original printing of Dungeon! It came with a folded paper playing surface and the cards were the size of the rooms, roughly 1.75"x1.25", and were placed on the game board in each room. You didn't need markers to show if the room was cleared, it was obvious. It came with the same generic tokens and a pair of D6. When we played, we never played by the exact rules. We chose whatever character we wanted and played until the board was cleared. The only problem is I don't know where exactly the game is. The box is long gone and I had the pieces and cards in a small box and the board and rules in a folder, both buried in my files. Now I've gotta dig them out.

Great memories of that game. That is the exact edition I played when I was a kid. My faulty childhood memories lead me to believe that the game came with D&D style minis but I think my dad put them in the game box himself. He was a DM in a weekly game at a comic book store in Atlanta and had plenty to spare for that game. I remember vividly playing that game and I miss it so much. I'm really surprised nobody has put it on mobile like they have with other board games. I also remember seeing those D&D books you had on your shelf on the left side.

Thanks for the great review! Dungeon was my favorite board game as a kid and I still have my original 1980 edition. It's a little beat up, but still complete. Through the years I've found and acquired the other editions as well (except for the original from the early 70's). The '89 and '92 editions are a little different - they expanded the rules to include an "Expert" mode. The expert mode includes additional classes (Paladin, Thief), wound conditions, and some player interaction (Paladins can cure the wounded condition, and you can ambush or team up with a player in the same space, for example). The '89 and '92 editions also have plastic minis for the player characters. I prefer the simpler basic rule set from the original and the more recent editions (2012 and 2014), though.

My friend owned this version of Dungeon! and was the first I played and I loved it. However, when I finally got to order my own they had moved to the 2nd “New Dungeon!” edition of it. Now, while I adore and love the box cover art of that original, I thought the cover art for the 89 version was so much better. The skeletons chained up outside the dungeon door that opened up to that Keith Parkinson dragon painting was so epic to me back then. On top of that the figures were plastic minis which we used in the board game and D&D for years. Also, the board was large enough that the rooms for the monsters held the monster cards. Once you moved into a room you turned the card up to show what monster was there. If you failed, it stayed face up in its room and once defeated the room was just empty. Now it did take more time to set up, but I thought it was better than the numbered system to show what was in the room which sat off to the side. I still have my copy with all the pieces, though the box is a bit banged and taped up. Great game. Great review. Keep up the good work. Cheers to ya.

Dungeon! was created in the early 70s by David Magerry, who was a member of Dave Arneson's group. Arneson had created and was running the prototypal D&D game, and because Arneson was the DM, Magerry created this game so that Arneson could play in a capacity other than the DM.

I have the 89 version, and in my opinion it's the superior. You get nice plastic minis, cool artwork on the cover, and the board is larger allowing the monster and treasure cards to be placed on the rooms.

Subscribed. Excellent review. So many nostalgic memories of this game which is perfect for adults like me who are either too intimidated or not bright enough to play real D&d (;)). I wish someone would make a PC/Mac version of this game like has been done with CLUE, MONOPOLY, etc. The only electronic version I know of was for the old Apple II.

Awesome 1981 the year I was born :) I have never experienced Dungeon, but growing up through the 80's and 90's there was an absolute plethora of fantasy/sci-fi board games. Some of my favourites in the fantasy mien were Key to the Kingdom, Talisman, Dark World and of course Hero Quest. Talisman has been reprinted many times, so I have a newer version of that. I managed to get a complete set of Hero Quest and expansions, working on some of the figures right now. But I would love to get a complete Key to the Kingdom someday, some happy memories there playing on rainy days with friends and family.

Punch me in the face with nostalgia, why don'cha? My mom had this game when I was a kid in the '80s, and I LOVED it. I need to pick up the new version! (You're not wrong about HeroQuest. I got a replacement copy for my birthday last year, and it wasn't cheap. Worth it, though!)

The original game had the board large enough to place the monster and treasure cards in the rooms... so no annoying number chits.

I was very young in the mid 70’s to early 80’s. My older neighbors (who sometimes would baby sit for me and my brother) were playing this game. I remember being at their house and kind of scaring me by saying things like “people have actually disappeared while playing this game”. Being that young whose to say it wasn’t true? I laugh about it now, but back then it was something pretty sinister and made me want to play the game. Years later I learned what the game was but still have yet to purchase a copy. I need to fix that. Thanks for the review.

Dungeon is one of my first gaming memories - it was the late 70's ('79 I think) and I had been playing this cool new game called Dungeons and Dragons with kids at my middle school, mostly during lunch in the cafeteria and before school. I didn't have my own books and begged my parents for them. One day my mother said she was going to town to do some shopping and she would buy me the Dungeons and Dragons Basic set (I had shown her multitudes of pictures from Sears toy catalogs.) I anxiously waited for what seemed like hours upon hours for her return and when she did she proudly pulled out something that was NOT Dungeons and Dragons. It was some board game I had never heard of called Dungeon. I was devastated. However, it turned out to be a pretty good game and we played it a lot. I eventually got my D&D set and now, many, many years later, Dungeon is one of my 8 year old daughters favorite games. I have a hilarious video of her at age 4 or 5 running with a card in her hand shouting "MOMMY!! MOMMY!! I HAVE TO FIGHT AN OGRE!! AN OGRE MOMMY!" BTW - Great channel, Ive been watching for awhile, finally subscribed.

I bought mine back when this 1980 version came out, same box etc. It is still up in a shelf in the closet. Of course, it has been opened and played once or twice and I wonder what it would be worth today? (Later in the Video) OK now I see it's really not worth that much - I guess I will just keep it and maybe start playing it again LOL. Thanks for reminding me that I actually have this game!
