Exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure some people's psyches will help them avoid this monster if you describe thr Wheep just well enough.
@aaroncunningham8307 Жыл бұрын
One thing I think should be touched on more is how the Wheep's emotional state plays into their undeath. As a spontaneous undead, perhaps they were someone who tried to take their own life out of grief, but their emotional state was so powerful that not only did their soul persist, but it became bound to their now lifeless body. As a minion, perhaps the psychological torture involved in their making is designed to create a sense of hopelessness, making the Wheep unable to even consider rebellion against their new master.

Nobody accidentally becomes a lich. Andres Duvall : "Excuse me?" Duvall was, admittedly, a unique case, and not a 'true' lich, but he was listed as lich, bardic in his MC listing. He was snooping in an actual lich's library, and got caught, and the undead wizard let loose a bold of necrotic lightning, which the bade tried to block with an ancient spellbook. He did not escape unchanged.

You know, I'd love to see the Wheep used as basically the messenger for an annoyed undead sending messages to the local nobility to please stop bothering him. A Lich that isn't really interested in taking over or anything of the sort, he's just there researching things and sends the thing to deliver messages for it along with requests for the local nobility to stop letting people come near his home because they disrupt his research. Perhaps also sending this thing out to bring back other things he may want. So a merchant suddenly dealing with a horrifying undead abomination because the lich heard that he's got a new shipment of exotic spices in that he wonders if might work as components for some new spell. Hell, putting a group of players, blindly, into a situation where there's a Lich that's less of an actual problem, and more just an eccentric and detached academic that the locals have just been stuck dealing with for who knows how long...and sees nothing wrong with horrific minions being sent to towns nearby or for things he wants that cause issues with the sanity of the locals and leave the local temples frothing at the mouth. But if the players investigate, the worst this guy is actually doing is requesting that he gets to deal with some of the condemned prisoners because he requires their lives to continue his work...or dealing with the aftermath of groups of wandering adventurers who tend to hear LICH and go to attack.
@morrigankasa570 Жыл бұрын
I love that idea, I unfortunately don't have a group to play with. But I have created 6 different lvl 1 characters in case I found a group. 1 of them is a "Male Mountain Dwarf Runecarver background Wizard planning School of Necromancy", part of his primary goals is to achieve Immortality/Apotheosis. But he isn't true Evil, he is 'Chaotic Neutral' and wants that Immortality/Apotheosis to protect his family and clan eternally.
@insanehiker5587 Жыл бұрын
I had an idea for a neutral evil Lich that would make a commissioned magic item for a party, in return they must carry around a pseudo-phalactery that collects the souls of the monsters they slay, Now I want to make a wheep be the courier to not only deliver the item, but also collect the pseudo-phalactery.

Alright alright I got it. Instead of Curse of Empathy, my Wheeps charm is a lure that makes the target slowly walk toward them. The Wheep then makes two checks to grapple, each success is an automatic bite attack. The Wheep then proceeds to detail its agony to the target and drag them off, or worse, deliver a message. The Wheeps poison weakening targets and allowing it to EASILY keep hold with its 26 strength, two pairs of claws, and two spare maws, as it prattles on about its agony that your to share and drags you along. Always at the same pace, even if at first your too dazed to resist and collapse into the mud, it drags you along.

@@christopherdaurio2617 It's a peculiar and extremely lethal kind of shadow creature from a classic series of games for the PC called "Zork." Text adventures have been grossly under-represented the past few years, but I find them quite enjoyable. This could be an incredible haunting arc. A benefactor hires the party to rid a nearby abandoned orphanage/jail/infirmary as rumours of a banshee have started, cries echoing from the massive building. Party saunters in only to find it silent. Following trails of ichorous poison through dark hallways they realise it's something waaaaay worse than a banshee. Tiny rooms and halls, and adding an ability to travel through walls could bring even more madness. DD I love the Hunt theme. Such a great choice

If you wanted to lean into the undead empathy angle, Wheeps would make for cool sort of inverted Valkyries. I think there is a small mistake on the statblock, the wheep as a +2 to int save and a +0 to con save, with a +1 modifier to CON I guess it should be the reverse? Also I once used a similar concept for a monster, where it wanted to share it's pain and it's grief so that it's murder could be resolved and the murderer punished, I had based it on the devourer but this would have been great. I also had added a mechanic for the boss fight where it was resistant to everything except the weapons that actually killed it and those weapon always landed crit on it, it was fun to make the player swap their arsenal for daggers and light crossbow and of course the investigation to find what were the mutder weapon was also pretty fun.

The Manic Wheep. A BBEG's second in command who constantly shifts between moaning and sobbing, and howling with delirious laughter. Could be operated as a classic Viking berserker, as in someone who under certain circumstances becomes entirely unable to recognise the pain they're in and thus just fights full force, even to the point of tearing their own muscles from the bone. Alternatively, could be one who is so very deranged by pain that they think they have had an enlightening experience, so they want to give this 'gift' to others - and when that person dies and is resurrected, well, why wouldn't that feel like a success?
