In my campaign we had a Sun dragon who's approaching the end of its life. It told adventurers it's "very stressed about it" and made them massage its shoulders and rub its toes until it dies to prevent "going supernova." Adventuring party after adventuring party shoved the responsibility onto each other over a few decades until our party, where they got frustrated after like 5 minutes and fearlessly asked what's really stressing the dragon out. The dragon feared his death will coincide with the approaching solar eclipse, which will end the cycle of Sun dragon reincarnation and cause the Moon dragon to rampage eternally. To prevent this, the players needed to find the Moon dragon and convince it to help. It didn't want to lose its mind so it happily obliged by murdering the Sun dragon early to continue the cycle.

Unlikely as it might be, suppose a Moon and Sun Dragon decided to mate and they produced an Eclipse Dragon. Essentially an Eclipse Dragon would have abilities of both, but it is at it’s power during an eclipse.

I have an interesting idea, imagine a Drakewarden Ranger whose Draconic Companion is a Sun Dragon. Then on top of that, the bond develops close enough that the Dragon Bond allows the Ranger to share the same lifespan and many of the strengths as the Sun Dragon. So then your Ranger could end up being countless Millennia years old along with the companion and then be a provider of vast wisdom & knowledge! In fact I think that level of Draconic Bond should exist with all Drakewarden Rangers and their Draconic Companions.

so. for harvest moons i think it becoming pure neutral, it becomes orange and becomes faster, for blue moons it becomes smoky, gains fake copies to trick the party and gets a chaotic neutral aliment, and a super moon... it becomes EVEN BIGGER and it gains a neutral evil alignment.

The blood moon dragon gave me an idea for an immensely powerful moon dragon scheming to magically bring about an endless blood moon with lycanthropic and vampiric (added because it fits the blood theme) armies serving its will.

I just had an amazing idea for a plot hook involving a sun dragon. you mentioned they get to be a small size when they reach the end of their life... imagine if you will your party comes across a group of bandits that have what appears to be a white dragon wyrmling in a cage. this thing looks scared and your party will likely want to help free it. if they do it will ask to join them on their journey and become a companion... but will never use the breath weapon... it can jump on people as a distraction or to knock them prone... it can give a couple claw attacks or a bite but you'll roll with the wyrmling stat block because this dragon is nearing the end of its life and wants one last grand adventure and so it plays the one part it never could even as a young dragon... a fun tagalong companion. and for a bonus emotional gut punch you can have the natural end of its life come about at the end of the campaign right after the final boss and potentially the only fight where it uses that breath weapon

I'm really glad you added the blood moon aspect but was also hoping for at least the addition of a 'blue moon' aspect. Another idea that crossed my mind was about the 'harvest moon' or 'super moon'. Great episode! Always great to hear what you have to share.

Glad you liked it! As for the other Moon aspects, I think that would be something really cool to explore! I was just concerned with adding too much to the statblocks and figured the blood Moon would be the most compelling. That said it would be really cool to have a "super Moon" phase where the dragon maybe becomes twice its size, or during the harvest moon perhaps it becomes insatiably hungry or something. The blue Moon could maybe augment its magic and give it some extraordinary abilities! There are so many cool things to explore! I would encourage you to come up with some alternate moon phases 100%

My world doesn't have moon dragons, it has The Moon Dragon. One unbelievably powerful eldritch draconic being that literally hatched from the moon. The moon is forever cracked like an egg in the sky and made of silver. Also the Moon Dragon has no stat block, because if the players tried to fight it, they would die instantly, as it is more powerful than even the setting's gods and elder elementals.

What about a pair? A Sun Dragon and a (non-malicious) Moon Dragon, either twins or mates. The Sun Dragon has to act as a sort if sanity anchor for the Moon Dragon, keeping them under control and grounded. And then maybe something happens.

Another way to do a moon dragon during a blood moon would be to make them temporary vampires for one night. Your average vamp will generally only kill a single person a night, since that's about all they'd need to drink on account of being a medium creature; but how much blood might a gargantuan creature be able to drink in a night? Plus, the fact that it only happens for a single night means the sunlight weakness means almost nothing, and their ability to fly means the running water weakness also means nothing. So its bite attack now drains max HP and heals the dragon, it regenerates HP every turn, it can charm creatures, and you can alter the 'children of the night' ability to summon lycanthropes instead. On top of all that, it's likely going to spread a hell of a lot of vampirism, meaning there'd be knock-on vampire attacks for the next few years until they're all killed. Massively dangerous, even a single event like this would be historic.

My idea for this would be that the Moon dragon actually becomes a Lawful Good once it becomes a full moon, and when a sun dragon is near a moon dragon it changes to its full moon faze. (Or a different version depending on how far the sun dragon is) Therefor, New Moon dragons try and stay away from sun dragons, while those in their full moon try and stay closer to them. This plays in the Mythos of the sun and moon being in love while the moon dragon is a full moon, and you can expand on it based on that.

In my homebrew campaign setting there are 2 moons, and 2 sisters, the moon goddesses. The younger sister is of good alignment and kind, the older sister is evil(ish) and kinda deranged. Gotta include some of those moon dragons as creations of that older sister.

Fun fact: In the vacuum of space, heat is actually lost very slowly, because there's nothing for that heat to be transferred to. But I'll chalk up the freezing effect of the Moon Dragon's vacuum breath as a magical property which ignores this. lol

Love the idea that a Sun Dragon came become a Wyrm Hole! Does Spelljammer talk about that at all in any of the source books? I have a Space version of Tiamat in my world, kind of a blackstar/black hole wanting to eat up timelines. I think it makes sense that this dragon might have been a Sun Dragon eons ago, but now has 'burnt' out.

I kind of want to see dragonborn that directly mirror these dragons in how they act, and moon dragonborn being the rarest due to their extremely unstable nature and mental state and therefore if one popped up would more often than not be killed on sight, but if able to live then that could be an interesting revenge story

I know that you already gave us a lot on the Sun and Moon Dragons, but what do you think would happen during a Solar Eclipse. A Blood Moon is what happens with a Lunar Eclipse and causes a change in a Moon Dragon, but a Solar Eclipse could cause a change in a Sun Dragon.

Garrick Millard that is a really interesting idea! Definitely feel free to come up with your own phases and stuff, but I could imagine during an eclipse a sun dragon might either become very depressed outside of its usual demeanour, or maybe it would simply be weaker, allowing an opportunity for its enemies to strike!

Fun fact: most of the time blood moons are actually not “blood red” like people think. I once got up really early to go see it and it got kinda tinged red-ish orange. It was still cool to see the moon a colour it’s usually not supposed to be but also a bit disappointing.

I could imagine a campaign where the sun and moon dragons could be seen as exemplars or highest servants to Sun and Moon gods. Like, imagine if the party, after a painfully harsh quest, returns to a village near a mountain where a Dragon Cult parades in with a huge cart of food and party stuffs, a box containing an egg, and (in a seemingly strange move) getting a thumbs up from the church of Pelor nearby. The leader enters the center of town, saying "GREETINGS, DENIZENS! We come bearing a great gift for thy village this Solstice! The light has shone brighter upon thy mountain more than all else in.the realms this day, and as such, we have chosen this ground for a Solstice Birthing Celebration! In three days, when the Sun reaches its peak on the longest day, a champion of Pelor will be born. Rejoice for He has gifted you witness to the birth of a Sun Dragon!" Proceed to show the cultists sharing food and buying out farmers when it runs out to party more. Then, have the party save the hatching party from an attacking Moon Cult, and ideally hope they can last for 15 rounds so the Dragon can hatch and take them out. For a Moon Dragon, one particular idea would involve an adult Dragon's Cult taking the heroes captive and lead them to their master: a Lawful Good Moon dragon in her New Moon phase verbally chewing them out over the kidnapping. The mission would come from her as she tells them of her dilemma: that she's a Lawful Good Moon Dragon, seemingly an Abberation among her kin. As such, the phases she takes shifts slightly, not only becoming more Chaotic, but shifting from Good to Evil as she becomes a Full Moon Dragon. The mission is to prevent the shift from Good to Evil, and she'll reward you with her full horde. Yes, the mission is THAT dire to her as she wants to be saved from the insuing Lunacy. In fact, as a Twilight Force fan, I would even set it in an Age of Dragons (no relation), as a large star dawns with the sun upon a New Year; called the Dragon Star. Upon the Dawn of the Dragonstar, a prophecy would unfurl as Dragons of old would return to the modern day, including the Stellar Dragons, Sun and Moon Dragons, Purple, Orange and Yellow Dragons, and even a Cult heralds the return of Tiamat's sister, and even the birth of a new dragon: the Twilight Dragon. Even mention a crazy bit of lore: the idea that the sun Dragons are ancestors of Tiamat and the Chromatic Dragons and the Moon Dragons are ancestors to the Gem and Metallic Dragons.

im imagining a plotline where the sun and moon dragon are allies and very closely bonded, and a blood moon is approaching. maybe the moon dragon is neutral rather than evil most of the time, but still goes on an unaligned complete rampage in the blood moon. its counterpart, being good, wants to prevent the destruction of the blood moon rampage while also not killing the moon dragon. im not sure why it would go to a group of mortals to solve this problem but it would be a really cool premise for a campaign!! could lead to either some creative problem solving or facing off against two of the most powerful dragons in the multiverse (since this sun dragon wouldnt take kindly to some adventurers killing its companion)

I'm revisiting the idea of Pelor the Burning Hate; or at least a sect of Pelor worshippers who seek to return him to his violent glory. They're raising a Sun Dragon to be evil; and spreading word to those around that it's an avatar of Pelor (and may even believe it themselves). Selune is calling on my party to address the cult. Our Twilight Cleric and Moon Druid are both tied to Selune; so it felt very appropriate to have her present herself as a Moon Dragon and instruct the party

I have another idea for the moon dragon. A blue moon dragon. This would be a moon dragon born during the second full moon in the same month, and it would be a moon dragon that is actually born good. I think that would qualify as something that happens once in a blue moon.

Imagine a party of adventurers wandering into a dungeon. Suddenly, the DM describes as a small white dragon wanders around the corner. The dragon begins coughing and hacking, like a cat with a hairball, and spits up a golf ball sized orb of light. I first thought Moon Dragons would have a more drastic Alignment Change when they go from New Moon to Full Moon. New Moon being Lawful Evil makes sense, but I was thinking Full Moon would be Chaotic Good. Heck they could go through the full Alignment Spectrum depending on the phase of the moon, when Half Moon from Full to New they're Lawful Good and when Half Moon from New to Full they're Chaotic Evil. Also their Breath Weapon should be Cold and either Radiant or Necrotic damage depending on the if they're good or evil, Radiant for Good Necrotic for Evil.

I can just imagine the players getting the help of a sun dragon to try to take down a Tarasque and then a blood moon dragon comes in absolutely insane and takes over the tarasque through the tarasques blood lust so now it's this big powerful battle between the players working with a sun dragon against a blood dragon with its own army and tarasque on its side

Perfect, and even better with your addition of the blood moon! I am featuring a dichotomy in my GoS game between two moon goddesses, Sehanine Moonbow of the elven pantheon and Cegilune, also goddess of hags. While Sehanine’s followers are werebears and silver dragons, Cegilune has jackalweres and I can use moon dragons as corrupted silvers. A blood moon is coming to the campaign, which will also strengthen vampires, but maybe Cegilune’s most faithful servant, Granny Nightshade of the Dreadwood, can complete a ritual to transform herself into a blood moon dragon (a la Malificent).

Going back to this video and recall an event I placed onto my players in an old campaign. I had a Sun and Moon dragon disguise themselves as traveling Bards. The dragons were in a competition with each other, nothing horrendous, least not on the levels of what the dragons considered bad; to which they wanted to see which of them were able to guide and direct adventurers to the paths they wanted most. Sun Dragon: Goal was to have Adventurers gain power to use for the greater good of the lands and the dragon would spread songs plenty of their deeds and adventurers as exemplars of their species. Moon Dragon: Goal was to the Adventurers gain power but to be corrupted and twisted by it, to abuse their power and the dragon would spread plenty of woeful tales of their folly and madness as pariahs of their society. The Adventurers finally gotten wise to the identities of the Bards. Called them out on it. Then walked away with the dragons simply enjoying this rare treat of lowly mortals actually being wiser than even the so called gods and higher beings.

um... that moon dragon is gonna be horrifying in my Soulsborne/Lovecraftian setting since in it the moon literally causes madness and has various cycles each with its own effects. so far I only have access to 2 of those cycles... scorching and vacuous. so imagining a moon dragon wreathed in flame or as a living void seemingly pulling in the souls of the dead is horrifying.

Moon Dragons turn into a riotous kaleidoscope of light, color and shadow when they near planets like Jupiter and their massive amounts of moons I also love the idea that S and M dragon's benevolence would depend heavily on what environment they are in. In a desert culture the Moon dragon would maybe be seen as the cooling mother deity and the Sun is a harsh, fiery presence.

Actually these dragons were first found in the D&D Immoral Rules boxed set, "Opal The Sun Dragon", and "Pearl the Moon Dragon", were both Immortal Dragon Rulers, in addition to "Diamond the Star Dragon" and "The Great Dragon". (See DM's Guide to the Immortals, Page 39, Copyright TSR 1986)

I love the idea of a Moon Dragon thats actually good that fits more with the Moon often being used as a symbol for tranquility, but still has the blood moon phase every 19 years. Perhaps the party is recruited by the moon dragon itself, as a way for it to keep itself in check.

I can just imagine having a sun dragon NPC that the players get to know and get along with and even get extremely attached to but then towards the end for the greater good and during an emotional moment the sun dragon gives its life fighting an entire army of other dragons by using an accumulation of size chain spells to change it from small to gargantuan bringing up it's already extreme power that much more The dragon went absolutely destroy and obliterate in an entire lich dragon beholder whatever army and then during its death it either creates a wormhole or sphere of annihilation destroying whatever is left not necessarily permanently taking out the threat but taking them down a few notches so then it's up to the players to finish this and eventually they're fallen Ally

odd thing to say in a comment section but i had a dream about the sun dragon after watching this i remember the smaller blue version landing on the shoulder part of my armor an calmly asking me if i could spend it's last momments with it I didn't have anything better to do so i went deeper into the woods and sat down when it told me it was time i backed up a bit and watched it as it fell in on itself i took off the helmet i had on and lightly placed it over the space the dragon had once been then left the wood's (sorry about the long message those who choose to read this)

Another possibility for eclipse. Some circumstance or ritual needs to be revoked but one of the dragons could dominate/alignment shift the other. Up to your discretion on particulars and duration of the shift.

I really liked the video. I was especially enthralled by the part about the blood moon phase for the moon dragon, & when I checked the google doc for the moon dragon, I was disappointed to find that the blood moon phase was not included. I understand that the video was a monster to make, so I can understand why it wasn’t initially part of the google doc, but I think after 3 years you should at least consider updating the moon dragon stat block google doc to include the blood moon phase. Hopefully you’re doing well, & keep up the good work.

My DM made a story where every 1000 years the sun and moon dragons going down to earth and have a battle to the death to decide who rules for the next 1000 years. When one of them dies an egg appears in the slain dragon's corpse. And when the egg hatches is the same dragon but as a baby, with all of the memories of the previous lives. Basically like a Phoenix. We helped the sun dragon against the moon dragon.

lol You hit on a pet peeve, but also a discussion that I love to have. Not specifically about stars being suns, but that there is only ONE star system that should ever be referred to as the Solar System. Not "A Solar System," but "The Solar System" specifically because Sol is the name of our star. Any other system of planets around a different star should be referred to by the name of its star, i.e. The Deneb System, or as simply a star system.

I know this is like a 5 year old video, but I had to comment because I think that it's funny that the Sun dragon is actually kind of a Benjamin Button situation. Normally, when stars are old, they get bigger, and they start to turn this sort of reddish color because they're cooling down. New stars are usually smaller and brighter, a pale blue or white color because they're hotter. This isn't always the case, but it's normally the case. I also think it's interesting that there's no supernova option for when a Sun dragon dies because that's one of the options that could happen when a star dies. It either implodes forming a black hole or explodes, creating a supernova that is necessary for formations of new stars and planets. Granted that's from today's understand of cosmology and astronomy so it could change in another however many years as we progress and understand our universe better :)

God, these are gorgeous. Personally, I'd run both as neutral-spec with an almost alien sense of morality, just because that's kind of my favorite trope for space creatures. (Also because the idea of a creature cycling between Lawful Neutral and Chaotic Neutral is HI-larious to me. I feel like a moon dragon in their chaotic phase would always be deliberately making choices that would annoy the hell out of their future self.)

Since the moon dragon follows the pattern of a specific moon it might not be similar to the moon phases on the planet where you encounter it. So the lycanthrope attacks could be unusual in the timing as well.

I had an evil thought for a great villain for some PCs. An evil Sun Dragon that tried to become a Dracolich, but failed and instead of becoming either a Well of Many Worlds or a Umbral Blot, it becomes something of a mix of all three a Sphere of Pure Neutrons like a neutron star and when it uses its breath weapon it becomes a pulsar with a gamma ray breath weapon.

also imagining a different end of life for Sun dragons; instead of collapsing into a black hole or a wormhole, it instead explodes into a burst of magical energy; energy which then reforms into a number of dragon eggs. Eggs of all sorts, though always(or at least almost always) at least one Sun Dragon egg. Maybe it even reproduces asexually over its life, producing various chromatic dragons(esp. Tiamat's), but at the end of its life, it releases a massive supernova of magic that then reforms into a sun dragon(maybe occasionally more than one) as well as a whole host of metallic(and maybe some gem?) dragon eggs

Or if a sun dragon was born while a solar flare happened or when a sun spot was hitting the material plane. Or if a moon dragon was born during a blood/harvest/blue moon

An idea for a moon dragon in a world dominated by a tyrannical and just generally evil sun dragon Instead of being based mostly with evil alignments it is mostly neutral. In its new moon phase it is neutral good, in between it is true neutral, and during it's full moon stage it is chaotic neutral. It still has an affect on lycanthropes in its full moon form, but instead of making them violent and beastial they are more calm and docile, like a pack of dogs. This moon dragon usually keeps to itself, hoarding items it deems of significance to itself. It can ve approached and will be civil with any adventurers seeking it's aid. However, when an eclipse event happens the moon dragon will change in alignment very, very drastically. No matter the phase it is currently in it shifts alignment to chaotic evil. The change only lasts as long as the eclipse, but a rampaging moon dragon can cause a lot of damage even in a short time. Because of this the moon dragon keeps itself seperated far from any villages or towns. This creature is content in its existence so long as it does not bring unnecessary harm in its enraged state.

Hey @DungeonDad you forgot a cycle for both dragons should have, that is the lunar eclipse. The phase where the moon and the sun are in the same place at the same time where the moon covers the sun.

The Stellar life phases described for the sundragon doesn't fit any main sequence star (because yellow/white stars aren't usually large enough to become neutron stars), but it's neat that their final phase of life is basically a neutron star (whose final fate is predicted to become a black hole). That's also not quite how blood moons work in astronomy. They're either the lunar eclipse itself (which is not all that infrequent or rare) OR they're the fourth of a series of lunar eclipses in a row (which **is** relatively rare). Sorry. Astronomy Nerd. Anyway, these are really neat dragons.
