On a slightly grim note, but I like to imagine that Moon Dogs are created from the souls (or animal equivalent of a soul) of "martyred" dogs. Basically, when a dog sacrifices themselves to protect someone, they are reborn in Elysium as Moon Dogs, just like mortal petitioner souls can eventually become archons. Except moon dogs skip the trial phase, since they already proved themselves to be the best boys.

On the subject of Celestial canines, Armenian mythology has a creature called the Aralez. In Armenian mythology, the Aralez is a dog-like creature with wings that descends from the heavens to revive fallen heroes by licking their wounds. So, they would basically good terms with a lot of gods that connected with valor and healing in a D&D-type setting. The Moon Dog's aspects and healing ability, especially how it is applied, probably draws on the Aralez as an inspiration to some extent.

Ha! In my third time playing when we all decided to make monster characters, I made a Moon Dog Paladin archetype named Good Boy with a demonic messenger called The Maelman as his arch nemesis. The character was amazingly fun to play and OP as hell with all the options for barks, spells and doing things like calling up his Planetar BFF Carl to do things like storm the nine hells. So it's a funny cooncidence that you mentioned a lot of that in this vid.

Indeed, it did. In the end, even thou he expected no reward, his efforts had her make him a cloak, but she used a jewel that had a dog worker's spirit from her grandmother's day attached to it.. the cloak gave foes targeting him disadvantage, and the spirit attached could once a day cast a misty step before he would get hit on him (I got to choose where she took him) before the campaign climax. That didn't end up getting much use, sadly.. But she also asked him to let her adopt him when(if) he made it back. (He did)

He shows you his hands, you freak out and attack him, he howls and jacks up your entire party and a pillar a light slams into the ground behind your party as a Demigod walks out angry from it shouting "WHO DAFUQ IS MESSING WITH MY DOG!?" Roll Initiative.

Loot Studios did a really pretty afghan hound inspired dog model for one of their more recent stl releases. The dog saved two teens in the desert and helped raise them until the brother decided to seek after his father's position as the king of thieves- so now the dog stays with the sister, providing assistance and protection. I was originally thinking of using this dog as sort of a leader of blink dogs- a Blink Dog Matriarch or something. But Moon Dog also fits really well! Having a character- player or NPC- that has this ridiculously helpful doggo around, only for that dog to turn out to actually be a celestial that's been hiding its nature the whole time? In a setting that's a desert created by a demon lord of gluttony taking every good and living thing from the surrounding lands? Sounds neat!

Funny idea: They do summon a devil, because they are fighting another devil who serves under the one they summoned but they've been in hiding and cheating their master out of deals and power. Basically the dog calls their boss to drag them back, and even if the boss doesn't come themselves they'd probably send someone else to get them, so even if they somehow won against the players their boss is on their tail again

3 things. 1, it would be interesting if they had some sort of effect or interaction with other moon creatures covered in this channel, say, acting as hunting hounds for a Moon Giant, or being in collaboration with moon rats as a part of a secret society. Or, playing into the canine approach, maybe one of them is the avatar of a Lupin god, possibly even the one responsible for altering their werewolf origins? 2, if they're dogs, do they have breeds, and if so, how does that affect their personality? Are moon bulldogs more justice-oriented, law-giving paragons? Do moon bloodhounds act like detectives, sniffing out adverse extraplanar entities? Do moon beagle packs ambush demon cults with magic howling? Do moon collies herd flocks of parishioners? 3, as an avid dog lover, it is now essential that I incorporate these good boys into my games as a DM. There will be head scratches.

For a time I believed it was from H.P. Lovecraft... Why, you may ask? In Pathfinder 1st edition, the Moon Dog appears in the same book and a few short pages after the Moon Beast who are evil and have moon in their name... They also look pretty dog-like from their image. And so, I believed that these lurkers on the moon of the dream world often combated Moon Dogs... In retrospect, it should've been more clear that was not the case since neither mentions the other in their lore, but as I later read old D&D monster books for fun, I did eventually discover the Moon Dog did not hail from H.P. Lovecraft (as a lot of older books do not draw from such sources directly).

Potential plot idea: In a murder mystery plot there's a strange old lady who hires the party to find the killer who has a funny looking pet dog always chilling in her purse. Once the players find the killer/killers they are confronted by them in combat only for the old lady to jump in to help. the players think its a "secretly powerful the whole time old lady" twist but she falls apart revealed to be an illusion and they were actually working for the moon dog the whole time

This entire video was a little surreal to me because I have a homebrew race for my setting that's also called Moon Dogs. They're sapient dogs with unusual fur colors and innate magic powers. They're literally from the moon and are fey creatures instead of celestials, with their own society and politics.
