Beyond cost is the variety, lots of good models out there and with a bit of work in one of many free modeling programs you can edit or even create from scratch once you build the skill set up.

This honestly feels like something that can get teams of people together with. A couple of painters with one person that does most of the printing and one that enjoys a bit of the basing and any other technical work. A team approach also has the advantage of spreading the cost and getting the most out of the set up.

Also, super-excited when you guys mentioned cross-channel team-up with 3DPrintedTableTop. He is a great guy and I’m really glad that he started releasing new content again. If you do decide to look into Airbrushing then I recommend checking out TableTop Minions. He is mostly into WarHammer models but his videos on equipment selection & techniques tutorials are amazing and he has a very helpful & informative manner that is really inciteful when you are looking at videos to gauge prospective interest in the hobby. I strongly recommend if you do decide to look into it... priming in mass & at a interval rate of minutes between coats is worth it alone. Base-Coats are pretty simplified and Washes, Dry-Brushing is something that you have to do with brushes anyways... but gradient shading and light-effects are an awesome upside and sealer-coats to protect from handling the finished product are another bonus to the airbrush on the whole.

There is a learning curve and many frustrations learning. There are also two main types of 3d printers for home. FDM which is based on melting plastic and laying it down. There is also the type they use here, resin printing. It is more expensive and requires a liquid that must be kept of skin and a second curing step. Resin printing is often a lot faster, and higher detail but max size is much smaller. I suggest doing a LOT of research before buying a printer.

Those are some nice minis! I've been resin 3d printing for 2-3 years now with the Anycubic Photon, and I recently (the last 6 months) purchased myself my first filament printer, a creality ender 3 pro that I've been printing terrain with. On that note, if you're looking to do terrain, don't do it with resin. It's far more cost-effective to do it with filament and it's just far easier. If you were to do it with resin you'd either need to hollow and leave drainage holes, or print solid which would either be messy, or expensive and heavy. Filament printing can take a while but is sooooo worth it. Also, it's far less toxic and messy. I love my resin printer but the ease of using filament can't be beaten for larger objects such as terrain (and you still get pretty fantastic quality). Anyways, thanks for all the great content. Can't wait to see what you do next. Also, I'd love it if you put out a video displaying your mini collection.

I had the same problem with loads and loads of unpainted miniatures, and no time to paint them all. Then I invested in an airbrush and some acrylic inks. It's a HUGE time saver. I can paint large minis in as little as 15 minutes. And the result is better than anything I'd ever achieve with a regular brush. Sure, It's another investment. And there is a learning process. But the amount of time you save makes it well worth it!

I have found using the new Wham Bam flexible build system on my Anycubic Photon S to make removal from the plate incredibly easy. I no longer have to be concerned with a model's base not coming off the plate easily. The spring steel just flexes and the bottom of the model is just flat. I have not used a scraper to remove any model since I put mine on. If you are doing a bunch, I would say that is a huge upgrade worth having. Saves me time, models and headaches.

I love to 3D print and love every chance I get to do so. If anyone is considering starting you can use FDM printers like the Ender 3 and it variants as a good starting point to get into just basic applications. Though if you want minis like the ones shown in the video a resin printer like what they have used is more perfect. Though i believe the ender 3 would be a great starting point for any middle/high schooler looking to start out as its really easy to set up and use
@tristencovarrubias49504 жыл бұрын
Resin printing is beautiful, no doubt... but take my advice and get an FDM printer for Terrain... cost management is a whole different ballgame. ....hit up iwata and see if you can get them to promo you out an airbrush set-up. Take that new floor layout to the next level like a boss!
@alexzandervegadesigningart78344 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to say for you but with the new 8.9" 4k printers the terrain will be more enjoyable and a lot better in terms of quality of details, a lot less time spent and the price will be managed very well as you can hollow a little bit the prints. for me fdm is ok for other stuff and for very large prints but again, only if you don't have the money for a big screen 3d resin printer.

@9:29 You don't have to use isopropyl alcohol btw. In order to let medical facilities have as much access as they need during these times, I have switched over to Mean Green and it is both cheaper and much easier to find. Pulls off the excess uncured resin very well.

I have been doing 3d resin printing for about a year. Couple of things to take note of. 1. The faster you can get primmer on the print the better. The more UV light that goes on the print the more brittle they become. 2. Minis are great but there are tons of other uses and things you can print including condition markers and number dials. 3. Get an FDM for larger prints. 4. Forget IPA, if have the ventilation --- Acetone will clean the print in a third of the time and way better. 5. Use a toothpick, a drop of uncured resin and a UV flashlight to put your prints together. Way better then superglue. 6. Also can do the same thing to clean up support marks and holes. While I disagree with you on the cleaning station, hey - to each their own, I am really really happy with my experience as well.

For multi-part models, you can do resin welding to hide the seams. Just get some cheap plastic syringes from amazon, inject a little resin in the gaps, cure for a couple seconds with the UV, then sand with 1000 grit if needed. Totally seamless, especially after priming
@shawnmayo82103 жыл бұрын
I own an FDM printer and I can say it's amazing what we can do with them. I've printed hangers for hockey sticks, a handle for my go pro and terrain. I've done some minis but between my skill level at the time and the settings, I see myself eventually getting a resin printer. I'd say as a piece of advice that the FDM cost is so low, that it's better for the mass produced items. So terrain and generic mobs are going to cost 12-25 cents (that's in Canadian Tire money, eh) in FDM, while minis for all your PCs and BBEGs or other stand out models are best in resin for that extra detail. The videos I'd like to see now would be the how-to videos. The ones where you walk through the process of printing. Maybe one video on how you're finding and slicing. Another on how you're prepping, printing, cleaning and curing your prints, including trimming. I'd also like to see some painting videos (I don't think I've seen any from you guys). Anyways, keep it up! Cheers!

Every mini i put on my table is unpainted or primed. If you like to run terrain and buildings fdm can make you some really great quality stuff. Hi guys, just a miss conception, the Photon Mono vs Any Other non mono screen printer, you CAN get the same crisp details, provided both machines have the same screen size and Resolution e.g. (2k) and the settings you use are perfectly dilled in as well as using the same resin. The only difference will be print time and LCD screen lifetime, Mono screens will last longer than normal RGB LCD screens. Resolution per cm of screen size is what you need to look for, e.g. if you buy a 4k mid sized printer like the Saturn, you'll still get 2k resolution details for miniatures since the pixels will be spread out on a bigger screen. However, if you want really crisp details on a Printer that is almost the same size as a photon/photon mono, check out the Sonic 4k Mini, that thing has a 4k mono screen on a Photon Sized LCD screen, which means, more pixels / cm which translate to crisper details. I for one am waiting to see if they release mid sized printers like the Saturn, but with an 8k screen, which will be a godsend, imagine printing 4k screen details for minis as well as well as Terrain.. not to mention statues or Cosplay elements... here's hoping.

So, it’s just $600MSRP to get the printer and curing station (on a site I’m looking at - unless you have the photon mono x which would increase that to about $1200). Plus the resin at $50 for half a kg worth which makes ... some unknown number of medium sized figures. Plus the paint. Plus the time to paint and the space for a painting station and the 3D printing station. Plus the unknown cost per mini when you’re buying each schematic. That is a lot of money, man! Plus the time investment for all of this. Was this a thing you guys were doing before you got free printers shipped to you?

Short Version: Resin is STUPID high detail and you just print and print and print. Downside, stinky resin (venting), expensive resin, expensive printers, limited build strength outside of printing minis. FDM on the other hand CAN do minis...but you gotta be able to spend the time dialing in your machine, and it takes longer. However, you can do a lot of Other Things with FDM that resin isn't just as strong for in comparison. Maybe one day I'll get a resin printer, but I'm just not set up for it. Love my Ender 3, despite the headaches it's caused. I have gotten a few really good minis off of it though.

I have a warlock of the great old one playing in the campaign I’m running, and I’m planning on an eldritch god being a BBEG later on in the story. I want the twist to come in that the BBEG is their patron, and once they’ve served their purpose they lose their magic. I was curious, what’s a good way to introduce them learning a new class/ gaining a new patron?
@Fastdragonstar4 жыл бұрын
i suggest casually asking the group before hand (as a group so you don't raise suspicion) if they got a chance to change their characters class/subclass would they do it and if so, to what? if the warlock wants to change class then either have them go through basic training of that class with the help of someone or having them get divine intervention/sudden realization that allows them to bring out their dormnant powers. if they want to change subclass or remain the same consider having them come in contact with other beings quite regurarly that could fill that role. IF and only if you want them to gain a new patron in the heat of a battle of crucial moment you could have some old god entities tell them slightly before or during the fight something along the lines of: "i offer you a deal of power, just speak my name and we shall be entwined! i am Yhagni!" or "want to show the true depth of your potential and the powers that comes with it? say my name, Yog-Sothoth! and i will grant you that boon."

@andrewmcmillan2294 жыл бұрын
I only have a resin printer so I can’t compare but I think FDM is supposed to be better for terrain. One thing is the build volume is much better with fdm printers, and another thing is resin shrinks a bit while curing which is bad for terrain systems that fit together like open lock. Resin is better for minis though.
@DungeonDudes4 жыл бұрын
I definitely think we'll be getting an FDM printer to do terrain.
@chrisfarrant1914 жыл бұрын
You can resin print terrain if you really want too, but, with resin you pay for the extra quality. FDM printers are much better suited to printing terrain, bigger build volumes, filament is cheaper than resin, and you don’t need that high level of detail.

So, this isn’t related to the video, but I had to come clean about something that’s been eating at me: To you, Kelly and Monty, I am deeply sorry for my behavior during the subclass ranking series. It was supposed to be a fun series where we gave our personal opinions, discussed them, and had fun. However, I feel like I lost sight of that, especially after the Druid subclasses. Instead of respectfully listening and discussing like an adult, I gradually made it personal, taking every differing or opposing opinion as an insult against myself. This led me to inappropriately lash out in the comments section in defense of ‘my precious subclasses.’ You guys were just presenting your opinions, and I feel truly, truly awful that I snapped at them like I did. I can’t apologize enough, but I will be better and more respectful in the future. Thank you, Dudes, for the amazing content you make, and I hope you guys are doing well. I’m sorry...

It’s a pretty human reaction to get defensive over something you are passionate about, and sometimes it’s hard to remember that we are playing a game and lots of people have lots of opinions. The truth is, Monty and I love D&D, we love every class, and every possible idea and concept, we think any option can be so fun. Ranking them is a challenge, because we know people will disagree with us. Thanks for writing this post. The internet needs more people like you who realize that this is all just to spark imagination, passion, and fun. Who engage in a positive and constructive way. We have no ill feelings towards anyone and just want everyone to enjoy the game the way that works best for them. We love this game, and this community and we hope you continue to enjoy our content, even when we have a different opinion. Much respect for this message, and thank you for reaching out! Happy rolling, and may your games always be fun and rewarding. - Kelly.

Awesome video. I have an Elegoo Mars that pretty much runs 24 hours per day. 😀 It has left me in the same boat; miniatures in grey every where I look. Check out the water washable resin for a slightly easier clean up. Check out Guy's youtube channel, MidWinterMinis, for speed painting tips that result in high quality paint jobs. He focuses on Warhammer 40k, but the techniques are still applicable. Check out Kickstarter for some good deals on miniatures also. But look for the presupported ones. Would love to see a comparison between different color resins.

I use an Elegoo Mars and I have been amazed at the quality for the price of the printer... it is amazing. Good for all large or smaller creatures (it can't print huge baseplates).

There are programs out there that will add supports to all of your minis/models that work great. A couple of my buddies do the 3d printing, they have great success with it. Ask the guy at WhenICan Gamer. Hes my DM

Auto-supports are hit and miss. On some models they work great, others they give you a decent starting point that you need to tweak from and still others they are not worth the time. If you haven't spent at least a little time learning how to support a model it's impossible to tell which situation you're in. Even with models that come presupported, it isn't a guarantee of a good print. You have to know what works with your printer and the settings that you use.

What’s Canadian dollar to American these days? I don’t live by the border anymore so I don’t need that information anymore.

You still have to pain the minis?! Say it isn't so. What madness is this?
