It wasn't my intro, but the novels were terrible at giving any idea of how big Faerûn is. To be fair though, the games are not that great at doing so, because the in-games maps are not exactly great (the BG1 map is far better than the BG2 maps), but getting into the games and into a fanfic community due to them is what drove me to buy my first D&D manual, the 3E Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, which included a full Faerûn map. I still have that map on my wall (and the book in my bookshelf), and it is still one of my favourite posters.

Back in the day I never found Toril all that interesting but it always seemed to be the one TSR pushed the hardest. Dark Sun was the most fascinating setting they ever had. I'd put Forgotten Realms the 6th most interesting setting they had. It's just the "Plain Jane" generic setting. By order of interest I'd say 1. Dark Sun, 2. Planescape, 3.Dragonlance, 4. Ravenloft, 5. Greyhawk, and 6. Forgotten Realms.
