I'd love to see a Banshee template so it can be applied to whatever monster desired. Imagine the dreaded roaring wail of a Banshee Song Dragon. Gaunt and vaguely ethereal in it's appearance, consistently enraged over it's undead state. It might even intentionally tarnish or scar it's once lustrous scales so it doesn't catch a glimpse of itself in their once mirror-like sheen.

Line between supernatural spirits and undead is usually quite thin in most of the world's folklores. In a "logical" take, ghosts, fey, genies, and certain monstrosities like berbalangs or the small smathering of yokai would have had the same type.
@iusethisnameformygoogleacc10134 жыл бұрын
@AJ Pickett Do you mind clarifying this? Because this Sounds like you're claiming there are multiple points of*origin *for the real life folklore*, which even the most cursory research would prove is too ridiculous of a claim to possibly take seriously and is a pretty extreme step of cultural erasure to take for no apparent reason, while what I assume you mean is that "the thing in D&D that uses this name, in reality, draws from various spooky things in various folklores and a bunch of stuff the writers just came up with that day", which is...a pretty weird response to use in conversation, but like...one that actually makes sense? In any case, the person you replied to is literally right, the only origin for the name is that it's a phonetic pronunciation for the Irish/Scots Gaelic words for "fairy woman".
@user-wq1dt7li2x4 жыл бұрын
@AJPickett , @@iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 is correct the Bean Sidhe (or Ban Sith to the Scotts) is very specifically Celtic. The term translates from Irish Gaelic as "woman of the fairy mound", and the concept grew out of the Irish tradition of keening. Keening was a kind of professional mourning that was practiced in Ireland for a good while, and was related to the belief the the dead would not rest of they weren't adequately mourned. Families, especially wealthy ones, would hire keeners. Women, and only women, who would sing lamentations, put on the ugliest tears, and scream grief for the dead. A keeners reputation with the lamentations would usually decide if she was hired and how much she would be compensated. The actual lamentations would be stanza after stanza talking about the lineage, vices, virtues etc. of the departed in addition to "interrogating" the dead by asking about their kids, the fidelity of their spouse, if they had been scorned etc. The Bean Sidhe is a direct descendant of the tradition. Omens of impending death that would appear before the person soon to die by wailing and beating clothes against stones in bodies of water (ie washing the funeral clothes of the witness, or washing your blood out of the clothes you'll die in). Traditionally the banshee only cry for five Irish families, none of which are Norman or English. These families are: the O'Neills, the O'Briens, the O'Connors, the O'Gradys, and the Kavanaughs. Some accounts have the banshee as an ancestor of the families, and maintain that she cries and grieves for the impending deaths of her mortal descendants. The folkloric banshee is not a violent spirit, she feared for the death and doom she announces. Tbh, the D&D banshee had only the most superficial relationship with it's folkloric counterpart. Similar physical appearance, does the screaming, and none of the depth. There isn't any compelling reason to call it a banshee when all the meaning is gone. Keening www.libraryireland.com/articles/IrishFuneralCryDPJ1-31/ Banshee www.britannica.com/topic/banshee www.irishpost.com/life-style/exploring-irish-mythology-banshee-170287 Dr. Zarka over on Stories does a good synopsis on her Monstrum video essay for the banshee. @@iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 what i think he is saying is that the vengeful ghost of a beautiful dead woman is a common story theme for many cultures. i know of a Russian drowned bride legend that has many superficial similarities, the main twist is that she likes to drown men in vengeance for being deflowered and left at the alter (which caused her to throe herself in a river and drown) rather than a deadly scream. i think that japan has a similar type of ghost too but i try to stay away from Asian ghost stories as they tend to be a bit gruesome for my taste.

@Camz C I know, it's great! Worst case you can have them reflect on if their character would know anything. Taking a turn or action to insight, or use of the the knowledge base rolls to help them gain some lore, a bit at DC 15 and every 5 higher than that, or what ever DC you feel appropriate. Some things from the Far Realm might be unknowable with the party being the first (surviving contact). Use arcane for dragons and some magical creatures. And religion for friends, celestials, and some undead. That way they don't know, but their character might know, a little. Gives a reason not to dump INT. Homebrewing or modifying I think is a great way to bring imn something new. After all this creature you found on the video might have been weaker than most, it different in another way. MrRhexx had a video about elven high magic, and there was a ritual that elves cast to destroy their settlements when they move on, returning the stone and timber to fresh earth. As such, the only old elven ruins you'll find are, essentially, mass graves. Sites where the elves were slaughtered or, at best, driven out. So my thought was to combine that with the banshee for a special kind of horror. The party finds elven ruins. Inside, they discover the banshee, and learn the fate of the elven city. The elven woman, spurned for her failing beauty and transformation, betrayed her people and shunned. She committed the ultimate sin among elves. She seduced the leader of an orc warband and betrayed her people. She opened the gates for the orcs, and all the elves were slaughtered. When she succumbed to her transformation and died, her first act was to murder all the orcs in the city. Now, any time the city is disturbed, the invasion is relived, as the orcs she killed rose once more as vengeful spirits. They find the bones of elves heaped in piles, and orc skeletons all over the place. And then, they hear it. The elven steel gates shrieking in protest as they open, and the ghostly figures of hundreds of orcs pouring into the city. The horrific battle cries are matched only by the banshee's tortured wail, and screams of "Vengeance! Slay them all!" It's a mad rush to escape the city before they're overrun. If you're good at horror, you can probably inflict a pretty potent fear effect on your players with this scenario.

I always liked the banshee in mythology as an omen of grief and death. I like the elven ties for the fey spirit variant I suppose, it serves as a good consequence for pc’s not to be too haughty as an elf but as a story telling device I prefer the banshee to be a soul overcome with grief and sorrow to the point they seek to drag others down with them. The epitome of misery loves company You know that feeling when a person comes to you sobbing about a problem that you’re woefully unequipped to handle? That overwhelming gut wrenching guilt and pity and uncomfortableness? That one friend you want to help but know if you do they’ll drag you down with them? Everyone seems to get really uneasy around people expressing sadness and despair that seems to be almost contagious and this is what I like to bring out in the banshee. A spirit just trying to make sense of its grief and in the process is dooming others to similar fates as it cries out in anguish desperate for release from their overwhelming state.

Not quite sure how to formulate what I want to say. This would be accurate for a banshee but more commonly they would represented as a protective(I guess they suck at their job?) figure tied to a specific noble bloodline, only making their presence known when loss of life is eminent. They absolutely could be represented like this and I can't fail to mention the Scottish hag of the mist who is not explicitly a banshee but this is how she should be represented. Not quite sure whether the beauty and revenge part actually has to due with banshees honestly that and the turning while still alive sounds like they may have borrowed from Japanese spirit lore to me, I'm pretty sure that polynesian an middle eastern also have their own versions of the woman in white which that and the shinigami are banshee adjacent. Being surrounded by those she's slain sounds like poltergeist territory to me those I probably wouldn't let wonder further than the propriety they died on but the longer you stay on the property the more broken they would become because the house itself is their physical body and they've absorbed so much lifeforce over the years as they awaken in response to your presence I'd let them have an amount of spell slots that increases exponentially each night which they could cast through any of the spirits they control and the save dc for the mind altering spells would get less fair as you continue to meddle with that that ought naught to be meddled with. If you're thinking that a little fire might solve all your problems you should know precious metals have a relatively low melting temperature compaired to steel oil paintings burn incredibly quickly and whatever noble may have potentially been grateful to see their ancestors home cleansed of the malevolent entity will be less so if it's also rid of the home.

the lore specifies it is a female only type of ghost. fairly certain 3.5 oriental adventures had a female only pregnant ghost, you had to beat three increasingly difficult strength checks to avoid being attacked. make all three strength checks and you now had a live baby in your arms with the ghost departing for the afterlife. it also had some other odd ghost variants, try looking it up if you want a weird ghost for a campaign subplot.

@@AJPickett so concept. If you manage to make a moonblade and put a spirit of a banshee into the blade. Her being elven. Would you then have a "Banshee Blade" Sorry mtg and d&d are crossing the streams again with a magic set based in forgotten Realms. Just made me this of this. Humm lore of moonblades?? Creation and whatnot. Wielding 2 at the same time?? Video ideas??

So if you play the act she recreates properly or if you talk to her like she is a beautiful woman can you appease her an end the encounter? Or is it all just an act at this point? Can you take the remains of an appeased banshee and play a dangerous game but gain a powerful ally? I imagine if you could she would link you into her own vanity secretly murdering the homeless man that cursed your name when you didn’t give him a coin or the girl giving you looks from across the tavern
@AJPickett4 жыл бұрын
The Banshee is playing out the act of murdering people she saw as her tormentors in life.. there is no appeasing her, her vanity is vile and her hatred of the living is predatory.
@teddys57754 жыл бұрын
AJ Pickett I imagined you could make her happy and at minimum stop her from being actively hostile but even in the best circumstances the banshee would be delusional or toxic only using you to fulfill its own desires or turning on you at the slightest rebuff. In a moment of desperation you might convince it your a long lost love and attack your pursuers or something but for all that is good in the world and for you the creature is better off being put to rest. Every time I think of a banshee I think of the kissing scene from Witcher 3 🤢 even Geralt was grossed out on that one but that might of died happily ever after

I like the concept of the Banshee as a being from the Shadowfell or the Negative Plain, instead of the undead fey, better. it's closer to the mythological Banshee, but it also makes this monster a true death bringer. can you imagine if she could even summon other incorporeal undead, such as Wraiths or Shadows!
@iusethisnameformygoogleacc10134 жыл бұрын
I mean, let's be real, the reason it's undead is because the actual piece of celtic folklore this is based off of has an association with death, the reason they're undead fae is that the person writing it did enough cursory research to at least figure out what the name meant. There really isn't much about being a monster from the shadowfell or negative plain that actually brings your version particularly close to the original mythological being, which is of course, literally just a fairy woman who performs part of the traditional mourning process - yes, having a woman scream was a traditional part of the elaborate funerary rites in Celtic cultures - for those who have no one else to do it for them. The Banshee really isn't much of a monster and there really isn't much there to make one from without just completely maiming it and really creating an original creature that really Should have its own name.
@jgr74874 жыл бұрын
@@iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 the same way Night Hags are Fiend, not Fey, the Banshee could still be an Undead with Fey origins. being a being (maybe a Fey-like entity) from the Shadowfell or the Negative Plain, she would still be an Undead. what I don't like about her D&D lore is that she's a dead Elf, not just a Fey death spirit, which sounds more like a special type of Ghost than a magic spirit with special links to the Feywild.
@razzelmire20083 жыл бұрын
Weak sauce. To you noob D&D gamers, the banshee would wail and if you failed a save you’re simply dead. They watered it down for you casuals in 5e. Ahh I miss the old days of D&D.
