The Flumph is such a good monster design, out of the horrific millions of aberrations from the far realm one of them must be polite and helpful.

...funny I was saved by a flumph before...blu'arg was its name...long story short I helped it & it guided me to safer route thru the under dark...like it literally guided me away from a hive of Mind flayer... True story... Thank you flumph.

Once played a campaign as a Shardmind Warlock (of the Old Ones). Largely concerned with accruing more knowledge of his patron, and the Far Realm as a whole, hoping to use this boon to repair the gate between the Far Realm and Astral Plane, or at least to see the knowledge to it's eventual end, and do with it what he could. Not overtly good, but swung more good than neutral, with a chaotic bent. We came across some flumph. And the DM, after I'd convinced the party to leave them be, and be chill, decided one of them took interest in this Warlock, and tagged along with the party, more out of interest than anything else. Acted like a sort of occasional font of wisdom, but usually seemed fairly "aloof spectator." Usually talked to my character over the others. And ALWAYS referred to him as "Little One." Was fun.

This is the way I've always seen Flumphs used. When you see them your supposed to think they are stupid and useless, but they are very wise, and know the thoughts of all the local evil creatures. Plus they themselves can eavesdrop on telepathic conversations, and themselves cant be telepathically detected.

I love the look of the Flumph, it looks a lot like the holy Flying Spaghetti Monster, (may you get touched by its noodly appendixes and your life forever blessed with perfect pasta sauces)

I’m running Call From the Deep for my long-running group. They’ve had a flumph shadowing them for some time, recording everything that happens to take back to their cloister. I’ve just been waiting for the time when they’re stumped or teetering to have Glumph “materialize” and offer to help them out. So excited!!! Thanks for this video; I love the idea of their little mascot charging into certain death with a kind of wink, like “don’t worry, see ya in a week!”

I've used flumphs a LOT in my underdark adventures. My players never knew. During an escape from mind flayer enslavement, they thought they were assisted by some rogue mind flayers who wanted their intention hidden from other mind flayers. That's one example. Lg genuises with weak bodies... I played them accordingly. Great video AJ.

I seriously think the Flumph is my favorite creatures of all time. Something about these small creatures that are completely good being found by a good party and there's something just adorable about them.
@AlexBermann8 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that individual Flumphs are geniuses. Their strength lies in a very keen observation of their environment (Wisdom) and a very strong psychic connection. This should allow them to work as a true hive mind and pool their mental resources - much like the Geth of the Mass Effect series. I imagine that a Flumph may not seem that intelligent when you talk with it - but if it takes some time to "think" (aka. communicate with its cloister), it will almost seem omniscient.

. . . I suddenly feel bad now. Only encounter I had of the infamous Flumph, was with my Minotaur Paladin in the Drow Undercity. I somehow became friends with it and our party traveled with it to return it to its family and oddly a fun conversationalist in the talks of honor and justice... till some jerk drow ranger pulled a Ballistic Bolt on it. I avenged the Flumph with fury of ten suns exploding. Edited: Though to be fair, I didn't know that Flumphs had a whole different way of life and death... makes me wonder if that Flumph my Minotaur, Vorse, met is still alive somewhere. Just picture a Minotaur Paladin and Flumph talking about the perspectives of Honor and Justice being from the being within and the realm about.

They sound like they would get along well with good aligned druids and Yau'Quib. The former tends to work with the environment and not wrestle control from it, and the latter even obtain a jellyfish like form.

AJ Pickett Dork! One thing I noticed and was confused by in the undead specific videos was no mention of Ravenloft or its views on the undead. That said, I realized it was more focused on 5th edition. Some of the Ravenloft stuff was really neat, like Mummies actually drawing off the positive energy plane, and whatnot. *sheds nostalgic tears*

For some reason, my headcanon for flumphs is to make them like the Mr. Saturns from Earthbound, in that they always end their sentences with some silly word as a sort of punctuation, like "Boing", "Zoom", "Kay-o" or "Dakota".
@randyranderson6902 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm How about an order of Monks that have a secret ring-gate setup to take their order to a deep, bioluminescent jungle/forest in the deep dark, that they use to meditate and commune with the flumpf on attaining inner peace and clarity of mind. While the flumpf siphon just a little thought energy as part of an agreement. The Order of the Tranquil Mind.

What The Flumph! Yeah, I'm sure you saw that coming from a mile away. All in all a great run down on a creature I once pelted sling stones at for a measly 1d4 damage - and now feel like a total troglodyte for doing so. Thanks for the guilt AJ! Thanks for the guilt. Now where'd I put that waterbong filled with psychic bio luminescent jelly fiah? :-)
This is a very interesting take on the Flumph, but I don't know that I like the addition of incredible psychic power to them. In the older editions, one of the things that set the Flumph's apart was the idea of them being a weak being that fills a lower tier in the world (hunting rats and other vermin), while being intelligent and LG. And the idea of the Flumph leaders have priest powers were very interesting and I think they are lost when you make them all uber powerful psychics.
@AJPickett9 жыл бұрын
+Mittierim I often go off on a tangent that extrapolates the nature, society and nuances of a creature, this is all, very much, take it or leave it.. if the very concept inspired you to consider the greater role of the Flumph in the underdark, I am overjoyed! Psychic power in 5th edition is in the early stages of development as of the time this video was made, so there is little to go on, regarding creatures with psychic ability.. if you take away the idea that it is possible to have a creature that does not use offensive psychic attacks, but uses superior intellect and co-operation to avoid or overcome conflict, then, mission accomplished for me. Flumphs are not creatures that could, or would, mind blast your character, it is simply not in their nature. I agree, really, that making them super powerful psychics would be missing the point.
@mittierim9 жыл бұрын
+AJ Pickett (The Mighty Gluestick) well then consider your mission accomplished sir. I have always loved additional information on monsters and other creatures, and I think you have done a great job here. It actually reminds me of the old "Ecology of" articles that used to be in dragon magazine back in the day. And I love that because it's great information that can be used no matter what edition of the game you play. (2nd for me) But thank you for the reply and certainly keep up the good work!
