I like to give my ghouls climb speed. I just imagine them crawling on all fours all over the place. This also allows for them to perform ceiling ambushes. If hunting players they can sneak up walls and through windows to bypass barricades that would repel lesser undead.

In X2 Castle Amber area 56 there is a reference to an area called "Entrance to the Land of the Ghouls". This is an area that the DM can create as a side aventure. "56. ENTRANCE TO THE LAND OF THE GHOULS. [In the middle of the room is a 10' wide pit. The pit is guarded by six hideous, beast-like humans. ] The humans are ghouls (AC 6; HD 2*; # AT 3; D 1-3 each + paralyzation; MV (30'); Save F2; ML 9; AL C). They are guarding a pit which leads to an underground labyrinth. This labyrinth eventually leads to the land of the ghouls. While the land of the ghouls plays no part in the adventure as written in this module, the DM can create an underground labyrinth and ghoul kingdom to supplement the adventure, if he or she so desires. At the bottom of the pit (70' deep) is a treasure chest containing 3,000 gp and a spear +3. "

I tend to make ghouls, ghasts and vampires demonic, not undead. The cannibalism and drinking of blood to sustain them fits more with demons than the dead. It doesn’t change the game mechanics in terms of turning or destroying them, but woe be to the necromancer who tries to control them. That also makes them living creatures. A ghoul with a ready supply of food could be sitting next to you in a tavern, looking for easy prey, unlike one that been starved and living in a crypt, feasting on the dead.

In 3.5e ghoul stats are good enough to have class levels. I normally give them rogue3rd/ sorcerer4th. CR+7;BAB+4 ECL: 11th Some times cleric6th. Anything to up grade the monsters to where I get to hear from the murder hobos, "You CAN'T Do THAT !" Undead monsters are the base ground work for "Horror" movies. So make the game Horrific .
@jacobfreeman5444
@jacobfreeman5444 7 ай бұрын
That works if you need them to be stronger to be a credible threat to higher level party. But remember paralysis is no joke. So just having a larger group works too. So maybe work up to having ghouls with class levels as the party delves deeper into a nest of the things.
@krispalermo8133

@@jacobfreeman5444 At a given level PCs fort saves are good enough paralysis is no longer a player/character .. fear .. issue. Not forgetting murder hobo wanting to be .. special .. but complain nothing is worth their time cause of low Xp value. But whine like a b-tch if you upgrade the monsters. ... " something about wanting to One Hit kill Xp snacking." Two camps, .. a.) DM only throws monsters at PCs that can deal with whatever the threat level is. Back in AD&D the action style was called .. Xp snacks. Such as you only face off against giants when the party is able to bring them down and no sooner. b.) DM is a D-ck, everything is survival horror, first reaction to anything is backup and run for your life. And you only gain Xp for killing creature and not for Role Playing. 2.) Then you have other undead effects such as .. Dread .. from mummy which just about no one role plays that paralysis effect properly. Such as the mummy doesn't see you, You saw them, make Will save vs Fear. If the mummy saw you then it will slow gate limp walk to your PC and start strangling them for 2d8dmg or hammer fist downward slam their fist into the PC knocking them Prone. Then .. Cry .. about Mummy Rot, but they were the ones that wanted a mummy story full of horror & terror. Understanding the difference between a Jump Scare and Dread. Jump Scare, .. you Scream in surprise or shock. Sometimes urinating your pants. Randomly run to be anywhere but There. Dread, .. you Freeze Up, and may still pizz yourself. Someone has to pull/drag you to safety. Main difference, .. a.) Hack & slash. b.) Role play gothic horror monster of the week story. Or is it a mini campaign sub boss ? Ghouls will allow living prey to flee, since they prefer eating Rotting flesh and not eating their victims alive like Walking Dead zombies. Also higher level n/pcs make better feeding if you do the whole life force lingering within bones used in necromancy rites. Cleric ghouls at 6th-level will turn their victims not turned by Ghoul Rot into zombies as a means to preserve the flesh once properly .. aged.

Hey AJ, thanks for another great ecology video. I noticed in your playlist that you made a video about the djinni. Is it possible that in the future you can make an ecology video about the other genies, such as the Dao, Marid, and the Efreeti? I feel there's enough content to make another video about the evil genies, such as: The hatred between the Efreeti and the Djinni and the hatred between the Dao and the Marids. How the Dao and Efreeti meet on the paraelemental plane of magma to trade slaves and make deals, while the Marid are trying to sabotage that alliance. That the Dao were tricked into subservience to the yakmen for several centuries, because the Dao Kahn lost a bet with the yakmen's deity. How the Marids try to usurp any other Marids higher ranked than them and the only reason the Queen has stayed in power for so long is she constantly has her court around her at all times so they can't develop a plan to over throw her. How the Dao have made a permanent alliance with the Jann for helping them slay an atropal in the plane of earth, which the Dao rewarded the Jann by giving them the Darrai Sei Rosani "Valley of Light" which is a cavern full of unblemished diamonds worth over 100 mortal kingdoms.

For some reason during this whole video I was thinking of the ghouls from Lovecraft’s long epic “the dream quest for unknown kadath” Of all his stories that one was the most fantasy adventure I think. Anyway, the main character kinda makes friends with the ghouls they help him get out of the underworld, and later safe 3 ghouls kidnapped by worst monsters, then they accompany him to see the gods so main guy can find the pretty city he is looking for.

I just started playing D&D with my friends, and the first thing me and one other guy did, was go into a forest and follow a trail of horse carcasses. We find a ghoul, my friend get's paralyzed. I blast it's legs off, then roll a 20 and completely destroy it with magic missile. We find another ghoul, I cast Ray of Frost with a 20 on it's knees. I then order one of my companions to grab it with his whip. Didn't go so well. Atleast I got the dexterity check to duck under the whip... Anyways, I use a quarterstaff to break it's frozen kneecaps, and stomp hard on it's spine. I'm really starting to enjoy this game.

Tbh, I've never understood why ghouls, like vampires, are undead when they present like hosts that are horribly mutated, like the strigoi from GDT's The Strain. I guess you could consider the body undead because the soul has departed and the body isn't really that of a typical creature anymore but yeah. Undead are a lot more technically diverse than any other monster type.

Supernatural has an interesting take on ghouls where they're additionally shapeshifters. They'll murder and cannibalize people, but while they do they inhabit their home and go on pretending they're the deceased, until the bodies are eaten and they must search for more food. I quite enjoy when writers evolve the prototypical monsters like that.

In my AD&D campaigns, those not in the know wonder why corpses seemed to be eaten. There are piles of rotten mince meat scattered throughout the area. When a ranger or undead savvy being come in, the rotten mincemeat is called "ghoul scat". That is when a ghoul gets too full, it finds someplace to vomit up its food. It is investigative if neither a ranger nor a cleric is in the party.

What happens if a Ghoul drowns? Does it die? I think your DM is fucking with you. Ghouls eat because of their curse, not because they need sustenance. They don't need air or food, that's why they are perfect guardians for sealed up tombs, they can last forever. They are powered by the abyssal energy given to them by Orcus. Although, they can probably sleep. In fact, that sounds like a cool adventure scenario, where the party has to sneak past a large room filled with sleeping Ghouls, and have to make 2 or 3 Stealth checks to get through the massive crypt. As for that info not being listed in the MM, maybe your DM has a first printing, and the later editions include that info. Check the errata online. But as a personal viewpoint, Ghouls and Ghasts are Undead, and therefore can't drown. Although, Vampires are vulnerable to running water, so they can drown??? I might have to think this over some more.

So yes, have your ghouls be doing all sorts of things as well. Just remember that the focus of their cursed existence is flesh. Thanks AJ. Someone told me that Sorcerers get tired because of magical energy or something.

Alrighty, I am back with an answer! So this is all thanks to fantasy author Jack Vance and the Dying Earth collection of books and stories that Gygax and Arneson based their magic system on, leading to the magic system being termed "Vancian".. and also the origin of the name of Vecna (Vance with rearranged letters, as a tribute). The basic idea is that spells are very complicated, mentally, and the magician can only hold so much detail in mind, also, when the spell is cast, the detail of it is wiped from the magician's thoughts, requiring a refresher from the notes in the spell book, every time it has been cast. This is a great thematic way to justify limiting spell use to serve the purpose of game balance, and it is a system which has stuck with D&D (in fact, a lot of Fantasy RPG games) for a long time. In the modern game, it still comes down to how many spells the magic user can have fixed in their mind at any one time.. a high level wizard would have no problem remembering a long string of random numbers, a grocery list, the phone numbers of all the best restaurants in town, and the lyrics of all of David Bowies songs.. when the spell is being cast, the mage is manipulating the undercurrent of reality with their raw will power, and I like to think, in doing so, they are exposed to 'things' that the mind just automatically blocks out, lest the mage has some sort of mental break from reality and becomes befuddled.. the spell is all about going into weird mental realms with specific filters in place, in order to do a very specific thing, and get back out safely.. so, built into it is a 'wipe' feature, to protect the spell caster from unwanted, lingering feedback, nightmares, or possible insanity. Divine casters are a different kettle of fish, for them the casting of a spell is still physically and mentally taxing, but, the effect is far more intuitive and channeled, usually by some other agency working through them, requiring that they simply learn how to give themselves over for it to do the work. Bardic magic uses song, mind, vibration, quantum field dynamics, string theory and the power of dance to do it's work, and frankly, nobody cares, bards are hot, nerdy book worms who know how to party.

AJ Pickett I do not know if its intentional but Vecna also means eternal in czech in a pun like fashion. At least according to this ill named tech company called Vecna. They even have a charity arm called Vecna cares; which is rather hilarious unintentionaly. Great video's by the way. They are so informative and well paced.

Ghouls were not individuals that ate meat, that's folklore in the game, and not even accurate folklore since the lore revolved around them being cannibals, while in actuality, they multiply through disease, such as Ghoul Fever.

@bryan diaz varela thanks Bryan. I don't know why I wrote ghosts, I know they're intangible. I was thinking if a necromancer had an army of undead he would have to keep ghouls in check so they wouldn't eat zombies, skeletons, etc

I've never understood WHY a Ghoul would prefer to eat dead flesh. It makes no sense. All undead need life energy to sustain themselves. They CRAVE that positive energy. I can see Ghouls being satisfied with dead flesh in the instance that fresh, living beings are not accessible to kill and eat. Dead flesh might ease the suffering of their hunger for life energies to consume but not satisfy it. I like having Ghouls in a zombie crowd. They're faster, some intellect and could influence the zombies. In my old game they could spider climb and jump 30 feet in any direction.

I had an old NPC with the craving for meat once but not for dead corpses it was more fresh than that. Like animal meat cut by the butchers she could eat it cooked but like it raw. She was a twitchy shy girl that knew she had a problem and tried to hide it from everyone, taking late night raids of the meatery. Now after watching this did I make a ghoulish character without knowing it, like is she coursed and become a ghoul just cause she likes meat a lot or she needs to eat to start eating daed corpses for her to be caused. I'm still a bit unsure after seeing the video.
