I remember how in "Homeland" by RA Salvatore where Drizzt has to watch the ceremony of ascension by a Priestess of Lolth to High Priestess where the graduating class of Drow nobles watch as the priestesses summon a Glabrezu and the new priestess has to copulate with the demon in front of everyone. Drizzt runs from the ceremony in horror and disgust. His sister Vierna scoops him up and takes him to a place where heretics are dealt with, Drider Caves. She discloses to him that she herself had undergone the ritual in order to gain the power of a High Priestess of Lolth. Talk about how "all magic comes with a price," no?

The Demon Summoning limitation, I have always felt that It was more a matter of Demonic Ego than any real mechanical limitation. A demon a Being of Chaos forced into servitude and denied its free will, at the behest of another Demon. The summoned Demon while an ally of circumstance at that moment, Hates and ultimately hopes for the death of its summoner and wouldn't give a shred of aid more than what is expected by the limitation of the summoning itself.

I typically have demon summons work with diminishing effectiveness. I.e., the first demon to summon in other demons does so with advantage, the demons it summoned do so with no advantage, and the demons THEY summon are summoned with disadvantage. My reasoning is that I want demons to be able to gate in others perpetually, but not exponentially. Often this means the main demon summoning demons for the express purpose of summoning other demons, so having them fail more often than succeed is fine, esp. If they are attempting to do it every turn. The lore explanation I give is that it is a consequence of summoning spells: each time a summoned creature summons another creature, it must work around the summoning spell that binds it to the realm as well. A "critical failure" on a summons from a summoned creature actually results in that creature banishing itself, because they "failed" to sustain themelves while attempting to gate in another, essentially opening a door to the abyss but being pulled back through it themselves instead of pulling out another

A thought. What if the reason summoned demons can't summon more demons is part of the pact that allows their summoning?The demon has to either secure a more permanent method of being summoned or subvert the magic used to bring them to that plane before they can use their own summoning abilities. But until either is done the demon is constrained in a way that keeps them from using that ability. Or if the summoner gives permission, of course.
@destonlee28382 жыл бұрын
Summoning always requires a seal of authority. It's not an invitation. It is a summons. There are consequences for refusing summons.and costs. Demons in my mileux can only summon demons within their court. There are kingdoms and fealty even within the heart of chaos.
@jacobfreeman54442 жыл бұрын
@@destonlee2838 I see it as a way to call upon the unclean denizens of the abyss without giving them the ability to drag all their unholy kin in with them. Because demons will do that if you let them. They want to destroy the world they are on. Just being on that world makes it easier for other demons to be there as well. So if the demons are not constrained they will either willingly call on more help or just have a bunch of demonic hitchhikers follow that same path. Thus the summoning has to close those options off in some way.

The jist of summoning limitation has ties to blizzare cosmic laws in place that exist to prevent the kind of stuff that was happening pre-pact primeval, where demons were being summoned left and right by primitives, and the Tanar’ri were more akin to demonic beasts than intelligent supernatural and magical creatures with aims and goals- (there’s this really hard-to place prehistory period in d&d you learn about over time prior to lawful evil becoming a thing-) I think it’s also linked to the powers they’re implied to draw from their home plane natively- there’s flavoured text for one of three ‘redeemed’ succubi in lore ‘silver skeleton’s paladin succubi & a web articles paladin succubi (both in relationships with celestials) and Wee Jas’s planar ally such I who have sealed abilities due to alignment shift, as well as Iggwilv’s commentaries on how demons can reform their powers and abilities if their environs change over a period- (there’s a few adventure’s I recall with outsiders that we’re stuck in a circle or sealing of some sort breaking their bonds in some manner and developing powers native to their situation to aid them escaping, or the introductory story to Incarnum, involving demons learning to use soul melds their own way. Basically, a good chunk of their powers rely on their plane and whatever link they have to it is present in the circle they’re summoned iIn- I think Eltab, the rules present in the demiplane of dread, and a dragon article featuring monster spells, including a 9th level spell that essentially bring it’s home to the plane it sits on explain it better. Depends on the setting- my guess is some places have natural defenses to keep outsiders out, and in a demons case, it’s just a few matters of leaving taint, vile darkness, and whatever else on the menu- but they probably stay because they can hang around using the active laws of magic- which is why we have banishment spells, and the wait x years to return using this method give or take.

i can think of a pretty simple reason why summoned creatures can't summon. it's not a permanent summon, within time they will be pulled back into the nine hells. if they try to open a gate/portal/rift/whatever for their summon to come out of instead they'll just be pulled back in. maybe make them take a charisma saving throw if they want to summon something else to see if they won't just be pulled back.

I gotta admit there is some missed potential with Glabrezu. I mean look at the things at first glance they seem like violent muscular brutes but while they are that they also have intelligent. So I would like to see some campaigns where an inexperienced Demonologist with very little knowledge of demons decides to summon a Glabrezu for the simple reason that he takes a slight glance and decides it's best because it seems like a dumb Musclehead and when summons it the Glabrezu decides to take advantage of that misconception making him thing he is loyal and stupid creature and when he has been utterly corrupted and has lost everything to his greed only then does he reveal the truth mock him for his gullibility and simple leaves. which leaves the poor wretch to either live a life of regrets and sorrow or simply end himself and be reborn as a scratching scrawling hate filled Mane due to the nature of his deal.

Regarding Demons summoning other demons: my take on it is if the politics of the Abyss that the individual demon in question is involved with warrant the summoning then the demon would be inclined to do it. If the demon were losing to the player opponents then the motivation of preventing banishment and the restriction that results would be a great NPC motivation. The other reason that the demon should summon others of its own kind is Chaos as motivation. If a demon is the type of demon where they are driven by their nature to spread chaos and anarchy then this would be the other reason I would think of for kind summoning kind.

Then might I suggest that you give it one of these magic items which you can easily change into a Greathammer: Axe of Mighty Cleaving Weapon (greataxe), uncommon (requires attunement) You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. Whenever you score a critical hit or reduce a creature to 0 hit points with it, you can choose to spend a bonus action to make a melee attack with this weapon against another creature within reach of your weapon. Charnel Reaver Weapon (battleaxe), very rare (requires attunement) You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. A creature whose killed by this weapon can be restored to life only by a true resurrection spell as their body turns to ash. Mace of Might Weapon (mace or maul), rare You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you roll a 20 on an attack roll made with this weapon, the target takes an extra +5 damage and is pushed 10 feet towards the opposite direction. Oozing Lash Weapon (whip), rare (requires attunement) This weapon appears to be a rusty handle, from which springs forth a rope-shaped tube of ooze. Whenever you make a melee attack with this magic weapon, it deals an extra 1d4 acid damage on a hit. Furthermore, you can choose to grapple the target with the whip instead of dealing damage. A grappled creature takes 1d4 acid damage at the start of its turn. Spear of Hindering Weapon (any spear), rare (require attunement) You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you attack a creature with this weapon and roll a 20 on the attack roll, the creature’s speed is halved for 1 minute. In addition, it can't take reactions, and it can take either an action or a bonus action on its turn, not both. The creature can make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. Spear of Striking Weapon (any spear), uncommon (require attunement) When you hit a creature with this magic weapon, you deal extra damage equal to the difference between the target’s AC and your attack roll. Sword of Ghostly Touch Weapon (any sword), uncommon (requires attunement) Upon using this weapon in combat, the blade takes a greenish-blue color. It sheds bright light in a 10-foot radius and dim light for an additional 10 feet. When you hit a creature with this magic sword, you deal necrotic instead of normal weapon damage against the target. When you attack a creature with this weapon and roll a 20 on the attack roll, that targets hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction lasts until the creature finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.

This literally has only come up once in the games I used to run, but these demons peddle flesh grafts in my games. In fact, the siege arms are a working example of the Flesh Grafting. If someone kills a glabrezu and then is ballzy enough to take bits of it's still quivering, moving body and apply those parts to their own body, they too can have a demonic flesh graft. It grants natural armor, strength, and, of course, those claw attacks, but it inflicts constitution damage as it is applied, and, if you're not an evil character, 6 negative levels. As far as a bite attack, a Glabrezu without it's demonic items appears as a traditional satyr demon. So like the traditional goat headed demon. Ones that have bite attacks have had their jaws modified to that they can apply a bite attack and appear more canine than goat-ish. Finally, they might not feel any familial connection to offspring because they aren't actually providing the material needed. Instead, they're just fronting with something elses bits and bobs.

Demons should absolutely be able to summon more but it should be frightening. While the players should know it can happen they shouldn't automatically know how it happens. They could try to figure out how, to prevent future occurrences, but the chaotic nature of demons should make the method vary from campaign to campaign. ---- If it only happens once it could be a carrier/budding/splitting action: The, "summoned," demons twist like pustules beneath the hide of the summoner, bursting fourth with enough force to propel dozens of feet away before forming into demons. The carried, now free from their confinement, merrily take part in the slaughter. They cannot, "summon," more as they fortified their contents once compacted for the carry. While demons usually won't eat the souls of demons they could still carry drones around. If it were budding or splitting (rolling the chance which makes a second of it's kind) you can have it split in two when struck with a powerful slice (or borne when bore through) or it can grab a particularly discolored surface area a yank until it pulls a second from itself. If it can be done more than once it could depend on the location, time, and/or the demon: It could be a matter of the demon getting a summon each time it succeeds in corruption. The Glabrezu says, "How about this, I won't kill you if you don't attack me." If they answer in the affirmative it is a deal and the Glabrezu summons unslaked demons. Some demons might only be able to summon when in contact with old blood. Some demons might be able to summon with every soul they eat. Some demons might only be able to summon at night. Some places might be consecrated against the act. Personally, I like when demon portals are different from, "normal," portals. The abyss is a living thing and demon portals should pulse with alien life. Demon portals could be a shuttering unstable mass of meat, a blinking eye, or a pool of slime. The portals get stronger when powerful demons step through and, "validate," it. Temporary demon portals can reasonably be what let demons summon more of their kind. If this means they can only summon once because they have, "portal grenades," then sure. I find it more likely that the, "action," of summoning demons is not performed by the, "summoner." It might be more likely the Abyss itself is trying to push more forces into the fray. They Abyss may hijack a demon long enough that it appears they are trying to summon, they are in actuality reflexively trying to resist this undeniable force and ultimately fail, resulting in the Abyss seeing from their eyes and knowing where to deposit more demons. Those who survive demon attacks might remark how the eyes glowed before more came. If this is the case demons, "pushed by the Abyss," would typically arrive in front of the summoner. That is unless the summoner has eyes in every direction. This could confuse some onlookers, "why did this fearless monster dump chaff between us?" Also, the Abyss might be able to see through walls/obscurement and drop demons in unlikely places. When reinforcement could come from anywhere demons excel at routing formations. ---- I'm surprised you didn't point out it's potential connection with, "It's a Gazebo."

Dunno if you read comments on these now that you've sublimed, but it strikes me that the summoning power has a 24hr cooldown. Arguendo: the 1 minute duration is waived, I'd expect a summoned demon to be able to summon as well only after some time (no less than 1 hr, no more than 24, favoring the higher end of that range).
@AJPickett Жыл бұрын
Sublimed? heh, no chance. Er, yes, should be variable and depend on the strength of the demon.

@@AJPickettThe reason summoned devils can’t summon is because they are servants, not masters. If they try to summon other devils on their own, it automatically fails. If ordered to summon by the summoning devil, it has the usual odds of success. Demons can and should be able to do it at will on their own. The chances of it succeeding should be lower for demons however, because of their alignment. The reason they were limited in the older editions was explained by Demon Princes and Dukes of Hell being rather annoyed at lesser demons and devils opening new fronts of the blood wars without orders. If a summoned demon or devil could summon whole armies, it would cause problems for their superiors, who would watch whole chunks of their armies disappear from the battlefield. I tend to ignore the “no summoning by the summoned” rule. It makes it more likely that the PC, who caused the demon or devil to summon as many underlings as possible, will be noticed by a prince or duke. “Are you the little bastard who cost me the battle because half my army disappeared?” is not something a PC wants to hear.
@jacobfreeman54447 ай бұрын
I would have the reason be related to the gods. That while the gods' influence is strong the world will resist allowing a chain of fiends to enter. At least until a critical point is reached that makes it easier for fiends to hop in. Devils don't make use of this mechanic because their purpose is to keep the law of the gods. Demons are the things this law is meant to constrain so while they are actively trying to subvert the gods' power it takes a bit to taint the world enough to make it work. So easier to get mortals to do it. 'Loths always had their ways of going where they want to go.

the way i thought summons worked is some sort of debt system. i summoned you therefore i owe you either a summon of me or ... that is why a demon wont use its summon for its summoner, it could but evil creatures are loath to do more than the bare minimum required and innately selfish so wont use up or incur a favor for the sake of another.

Tbh I think it makes sense why a summoned demon couldn't summon another. Or rather I believe that it should be an option for the caster. If a necromancer summons a demon and that demon summons another, the second demon is subservient to the first demon and not the original necromancer. So I can imagine why you'd want to stop that. Even for a Glabrezu who might want some backup, I could imagine why you'd restrict the summoning abilities of your minions. I mean demons typically hold no allegiances for anyone even other demons
@dropkickpiper32046 жыл бұрын
My headcanon reason why summoned demons mechanically can’t summon more demons themselves (at least on any plane other than the Abyss) is this; it takes great effort for a demon or other extraplanar entity to simply exist on the prime material, such that when a demon, devil or other summoner calls in its backup, those summons are only there for a fleeting period prior to vanishing back onto their home plane. I imagine the summoning might function more like an astral projection of sorts. On the Abyss however, all bets are off since anything goes down there.
@johntheherbalistg87566 жыл бұрын
With regard to the summoning ability of demons: I think it's a recharge thing. After a period of time, if they are not banished or destroyed, they can summon other demons. This is the perfect reflection of their desire to tear apart material planes, but a workable limitation to that ability. The time required would depend on the power of the demon that summoned them, their own power and the advance of corruption in the area or plane they are summoned to
@TheSilversepiroth6 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that this is one of the few creatures (at least in Pathfinder) that has a specific grafting function. Mythic characters may bind the claw to their arm to use the creature's spells (chaos hammer, confusion, dispel magic, mirror image, reverse gravity, true seeing, greater teleport (self plus 50 pounds of objects only), veil (self only), unholy blight, power word stun summon (level 4, either 1 glabrezu 30% or 1d2 vrocks 70%,) as well as gain a deflection bonus to AC equal to their mythic tier. They also become immune to electricity and poison, so it's a pretty powerful artifact. However, non-mythical characters that attempt to use it take 5d6 damage as the parasitic demon within the claw devours the arm of the creature foolish enough to attempt to use it
@UncooperativeMultiplayer6 жыл бұрын
I didn't know the claw was an artifact that could be utilized from them by mythics. Neat, thanks.

@@UncooperativeMultiplayer I enjoy letting players use monster parts for benefit, and even moreso if they wanna play up the mad scientist & strap bits onto themselves, but sadly nowadays we don't really get mechanical support on that from the game developers. In fact, so far as I'm aware this is the only thing that Pathfinder specifically calls out as being a piece of another creature you can strap onto yourself

I once played in a game where we attempted to adapt one of the Choirs of Angels from the SJ Games translation of In Nomine. Have you attempted to do such a thing with angels & demons from other systems too? I played an Ofanite (plural Ofanim,) who as an inborn ability could always sense the quickest way to get anywhere under current conditions. A Demon from that system could be the Lilim (daughters of Lilith,) who can sense what a target Needs, & lay Geases for the Need they fulfilled without any kind of formal contract equal to the difficulty of how it would be for the target to have done or something equivalent themselves. If you are unfamiliar with the Angels & Demons from In Nomine the basic idea is that all of them in the physical world look like ordinary humans with various innate spell like abilities based on Willpower or Perception called their Resonance based on what race of Angel or Demon they were. In D&D I'd suggest using Charisma instead of Willpower. Demons inborn abilities frequently used their Willpower to warp the minds of those they came in contact with, while Angels used their Perception to read the minds & Reality itself as theirs. Each resonance that could make it harder to use this inborn ability, for Demons it was if the target's Willpower was strong enough to resist the effect, but for Angels it was some kind of Ban related to their Resonance. For example Seraphim (which appeared as 6 eyed, 6 bird winged, dragon like serpents,) could use their Resonance to tell if someone was telling the truth, with a high enough success they could even tell what the truth was as their Resonance was basically asking the Universe for the answer. The downside is they couldn't lie or any future Resonance rolls would be harder until they atoned for that sin against their nature, with enough violations leading them to Fall into the corresponding Demonic Band. Would you or have you ever converted any Monsters, be they Outsiders or anything else from another RPG to D&D?
@zacharyhawley16936 жыл бұрын
Nomine deliberately does not stat the more powerful demons or angels. Facing those powers is supposed to be a death sentence regardless of faction. I did adapt the demon lord of media. However to lower demon lord status.

Very likely they have. There are good Drow. If you follow the books, there was a set of events. That took place, that removed all decent drow alive at the time. Away form Loth, who was pissed by this. There skin turned a brown. An they were welcomed back by the Elven Gods. Not sure what it means for any drow born after this. I guess its all decided at birth or maybe they get a choice at some point. In there life when its Loth or some other god. They do have free will. So its an interesting plot idea.

I always assumed the Summoned Demon can't summon Demons rule was due to the demon's powers literally not allowing it to. I certainly don't have answers as to WHY, but I always think of it with the idea "you can bring a +1 to a party, but your +1 can't bring a +1". Again, I don't know exactly why or how to explain it, but it seems to just make sense to me.
@johntheherbalistg87566 жыл бұрын
I think that nerfs demons too much, personally. I think after a small amount of time, if not banished or destroyed, they would be able to summon new demons to assist them in running over and destroying the material plane that was foolish enough not to keep them out.
