I like to think of the spells inscribed on the inside of the sphere as being wards put in place by the gods(or maybe AO, but probably not) to be used against vastly powerful creatures like Atropus, or any other creature of that power level to prevent them from just eating sphere after sphere. Or for use against some even greater threat from outside the sphere. Things that would require a 100 mile wide Firestorm in order to put a scratch in. Or they could just be AO’s “End Test” button. Placed there for the purpose of destroying the entirety of all creation within the sphere in the event that AO finds it necessary or just wants to start over.

Thank you AJ I had a little trouble picturing the universe in D&D
@That80sGuy19725 жыл бұрын
When I created Loom of Magus, Spelljammer came later. In Loom, I opened my universe to have any DM create their own world anywhere and have their own gods or aspects of gods. I even have divinity rules based upon D&D boxed sets akin to the Immortals set. Loom of Magus is a sphere 100 light-years in diameter. Most of its mass is in its "equator". Almost all of the stars are suns. Nearly every sun has at least one planet with sentient life on it, all suns have a planet with life on it. My friend was a Spelljammer guy introducing me to the material. I was in the process of other celestial efforts. When in Loom of Magus, they are in their sluggish speed always. If they are in a ley line (between stars, "suns"), they are incredibly fast thanks to "solar winds"... higher "warp" speed akin to ancient empires. They can even jump from star-to-star superspeed to go-to-planet superspeed. Given what has been thrown at me at the time, I decided to make Loom of Magus a giant Crystal Sphere that is on the other side of Concordant Opposition to Sigal with tangents on all planes. In the Prime, Loom of Magus's crystal sphere looks like a wall with the solar systems being all our veteran player's old gaming worlds... happy endings and dystopias.

Mystra, as well as being the goddess of magic, is the goddess of time. That is canon. There are three time gates hidden on the surface of Faerun also, so yes time travel is definitely possible. It has even been used in FR novels to give us what happened during the fall of Netheril and casting of Karsus’s Avatar. I believe the novel is called Dangerous Games. Well worth the read if your interested in fall of Netheril and scattering the survivors over Faerun, particularly to Halrua and setting of the mageocracy there.

The Cosmic Egg (the first crystal sphere) was broken when evil spellcasters attempted to use their powers to dominate peaceful space creatures known as the spaarkil. The spaarkil had been swimming around inside the crystal sphere looking down on various people and creatures on the worlds within the sphere. When they realised that a groundling race was attempting to dominate their minds, the spaarkil attempted to open a portal into the phlogiston so that they could flee. In their panic they pushed too hard and created a hole that allowed the phlogiston to enter the sphere. The phlogiston rushed in met the sun and caught fire and the fire spread to the worlds within the sphere. The spaarkill were horrified at what they had done and set about saving as many of the creatures on the worlds that were being destroyed. They used some sort of ancient primal magic to merge themselves into a single gigantic creature large enough to carry a city on it's back. The semi-living creature had the memories of the spaarkil and teleported various races onboard itself and used it's magic to propel itself through space. The creature spent generations looking for habitable crystal spheres, where colonies of the primal races it carried could be established, but did eventually spread them all across the multiverse. This was so long ago that some of these ancient races have now vanished from the universe and new races have sprung up that only know of them as legends. The city-sized manta ray is also the talk of legend. The Spelljammer has been seen flying above the skies of countless worlds and there are just as many different stories about it's purpose.

I've been playing in a live-streamed Spelljammer game for the last couple of years. Our GM (AuldDragon) made a "Spelljammer Campaign Background and Player Primer" video that some of you might like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJC8mqqLfbl_raM There are many sources of Realmspace canon, other than SJR2 Realmspace. I've been trying to collate information from them in this topic over at the Spelljammer forum at The Piazza: www.thepiazza.org.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10260 I would highly recommend "A World of Your Own: Island Campaigns" to anyone who likes the idea of adding a short trip up into Wildspace to a Forgotten Realms campaign. The Polyhedron articles will help you build up the detail in the Tears of Selûne and you can keep the action fairly close to Toril itself. The 4th Edition Living Forgotten Realms campaign created a few Spelljammer tie-in adventures that were mostly based on Toril. Visitors From Above (the Spelljammer adventure written by a NASA employee) is also a good way to introduce Realmspace as a side-trek. If you do something like that, and it doesn't work out so well, you can shunt the action back to the world and carry on with Forgotten Realms adventures. So it's a low-risk way to introduce Spelljammer to your game.

Ok, but if a crystal sphere has toril level gravity on its surface, you could cover the inner surface in dirt, import a crap load of air, heavily strengthen the strength of the sphere's star, and have the most massive world imaginable! Like, if we're using our solar system as a template, we would have a crystal sphere with a radius twice that of Pluto's orbit, about 9.17 *Billion* miles from one end to the other. The surface area of such a sphere would be 1.34 *TRILLION* times the surphace of the earth. That much world, with oceans and island and continents and deserts and jungles and plains and forests and mountains... A lot of people have lifted his map over the years, but there is no official TSR or WotC map that shows what the overall multiverse looks like. There is a Mystara/Spelljammer crossover adventure that includes talk of the Rock of Bral in it, but the Rock of Bral is listed as a "put this wherever you want" place in the original AD&D Adventures in Space boxed set. So that's not confirmation that Mystaraspace is close to Bralspace.

The irony of Spelljammer is that it is based on abandoned real-world scientific theories. They don't date back quite to the medieval period, but the fit in fairly well with legends of creatures like dragons. Phlogistion theory is a theory that got abandoned after oxygene theory got adopted by scientists. It held that all items contained something called phlogistion that would burn. Things would become dephlogistionised when burned or something of that ilk. Crystal shells surrounding our sun got abandoned when scientists decided that stars were at different distances from our Sun. But some early philosophers thought that each planet (wandering star) was attached to an invisible globe and that the outer globe had the background stars on it. (And when they used the have Geocentric ideas of the universe - something that Spelljammer uses for Greyspace - philosophers used to have theories explaining why planets went into retrograde motion at certain times.) It's easy to see how the real Solar System works now, but if an ancient person wrote about a ship sailing into the heavens (and several of them did) they would probably write a story where space behaved very similar to how it does in Jeff Grubb's campaign setting. In Spelljammer, Jeff Grubb essentially created a situation where ancient legends of ships flying into outer space worked, as described. :-)

No, the Blind Eternities would be more like the void between multiverses, literally nothing there at all, an emptiness so profound only the Far Realm can bridge it.

This is a great video, but isn't one of the huge concepts of the phlogiston that in no way can it enter a crystal sphere?

Would a crystal sphere the size of the known universe be possible
@theoptimist53663 жыл бұрын
Yes. The important thing about infinity is that it can be contained within a finite area. For example, the Mandelbrot set (or any other fractal design), any accurately-measured coastline in the world, parts of Escher's artwork, or any number of mathematical experiments devised to show 'infinity' as a concept. There's also the possibility that our sense of scale is skewed: we could be on a planet the size of an atom when compared to something else. Is any of that probable? Hmm. No evidence for universe-containing crystal spheres so far.
@chriswright8114 Жыл бұрын
@@theoptimist5366 it's possible, but you're method is seriously flawed. first, the universe isn't infinite, so that has nothing to do with anything. second, coastlines, Escher's art, etc... are not infinite. there's a very large difference between infinity as a concept and actual infinity. third, _relative_ sense of scale has nothing to do with it. we aren't _objectively_ the size of an atom.

Couldn’t the Time Stop spell be considered a sort of time travel? You’re not going back in time, but you’re moving through time. Even the Shield spell could be considered a form of time travel.

Hey AJ, me and my friends are playing a DnD campaign that has gotten pretty crazy. Some of the big baddies that have shown up are named The Dark Six. A bunch of Gods. Problem is I can't find enough info on them online to satiate my desire for eldritch knowledge. I don't suppose your far superior information gathering skills could make this into a video? And maybe The House of Vol/The Blood of Vol to. There's enough info on them yeah but almost no one talks about them on youtube or otherwise. It would be really nice to have a video format on them.

The Dark Six is the collective name for six evil deities in the Eberron Campaign Setting: eberron.fandom.com/wiki/The_Dark_Six You won't find them, or the Blood of Vol, in Realmspace. You will find information about them in places where Eberron fans hang out. :-)

was never a fan of this cosmology, I never include it in my games. I have my own system.

Yeah, I hear you. It's just weirdness for weirdness sake, none of it really makes the cosmology interesting, just kind of confusing and kooky. That's the same reason I wasn't a fan of Torment: Tides of Numenera, just a bunch of weird shit with not much substance.

Tatsusama but in D&D Dirt from the plane of Earth is different from regular dirt from the Toril, and wind from Toril is different from wind from the Plane of Air. So Earth Dirt or Air Wind might actually be a differentiation you would need to make at certain points. Honestly, I could see one of the cultures in D&D that were once humans from Earth keeping an ancient terra-cotta pot of dirt from Earth as a holy relic. “The High Holy Jar of Earth Dirt”.
