The unusual Steel dragons native to Faerun, also known as Waterdeep Dragons, they are both well known and quite mysterious, thanks to their ability to stay in polymorphed, humanoid shape for as long as they desire to do so.

Steel dragon who didn't know they were a dragon from a curse etc. etc. and blacked out once a month to feed. Could be an great end-campaign reveal to the group as the character remembered.

Countfoscolikesmice trying to find a DM that will allow a player character like that with a sorcerer/fighter multiclass who's true race is Steel Dragon who has lost his draconic memories but his draconic bloodline being that of steel without the usual sorcerer mutations would be a subtle hint of his true nature. That and his inhuman appetite. He'd have the disadvantage of a malnourished dragon of course since a human diet won't be enough to fill a fucking dragon and weaken it severely.

Done this. Just finished a 2yr (real time) campaign. And yes, the reveal was VERY shocking for our 8 member party. Biggest surprise was that the DM & I managed to keep this hidden for so long.

@@AmaryInkawult have you looked at Hoard of the Dragon Queen? One of the optional bonds for the campaign is that you were a gold dragon that had a falling out with bahamut so he cursed you to relive life as a mortal to learn your lesson. It implies if you please him thru your deeds he will redeem you upon death.

Song dragons might rival Steel dragons for "most time spent in humanoid form." Lol I am very much in favor of players choosing exotic races and am a fan of creatures that are monstrous, powerful or versatile, SO LONG AS THEY CAN PASS IN A SETTLEMENT. This fits, so it sits. Gonna use this, thanks for the vid!

The first time I ran across a "Steel Dragon" was in one of the Greyhawk Monster Manuals from 2nd edetion. It was reprinted in the Dragonomicon as Steel dragon later that year for Forgotten Realms. Usually you give appearance Lore too.

There's a steel dragon (unbeknownst to my players) who runs a meatshop in a city they hang out in. He enjoys living human life, going so far as to let the local mafia run a protection racket on him, just because it's fun and he knows they can't actually harm him. He particularly loves finding charismatic people, who can hold a good converation with him, and hiring them as help. One of my players, a redemption paladin and war veteran, has found herself in this situation (and also is quite smitten with him, which is going to be interesting to sort out when his identity gets revealed)

I suggest you pick up Dragons of Faerun, it is one of the better campaign source books, pretty much a who's who of the true dragons in Faerun and a if you are planning a game featuring the Cult of the Dragon, say, to carry on from the Horde of the Dragon Queen, etc.. I would call it a must have for the library.

its a lot of names, places and politics, some adventures, a few new critters, the three new True Dragons, new dragon magic, new draconic magic items and it is all 3.5 edition, so, not terribly difficult to convert, just apply challenge rating to the critters and that takes care of Hit Points, Armor Class, Attack Bonus and Damage, the rest is mostly the same, just apply a bit of common sense.

In my current campaign, the DM has the story split into different groups of player characters, and different points in time, plus, one set of characters had the ability to 'Ascend' from lower level, to one that is 5 levels higher, we could do this a set number of times per day and usually it was reserved for combat.. a game where all the character's had alternate forms is quite feasible, and I can attest from experience, it is a lot of fun.

Been loving the channel and getting a lot of great inspiration from your videos. Wanted to let you know I'm now running a campaign that's heavily inspired by this video in particular. The party I'm running for is contracted out by the Seven Swords company to the young dragon daughter of Jelanvaloss, who is acting as a spoiled rich noblewoman. They are attempting to secure and develop the land surrounding Nelbalneth's lair, that is currently swelling with orcs and goblinoids now that his corruption has been lifted. Entire endeavour is being bankrolled by her inheritance of his hoard. End game is ramping up to a splinter faction of the dragon cult turing the Orc hoards against each other and using their life force to return Nelbalneth as a Draco-lich. Been dropping a lot of hints their benefactor is more than she seems and they are starting to acquire the tools to work it out. It's been a ton of fun to RP and can't wait to see how it works out. Thanks again for all the great content and inspiration! Looking forward to Ebberon and Spelljammer in 5E.

It is odd that they are not Ferrous Dragons. Because Steel is an iron alloy.
@AJPickett
@AJPickett 6 жыл бұрын
Well, these naming conventions are an invention of other species, dragons most likely refer to the lineage of another dragon, rather than what specific metal it looks like.. I am not a fluent draconic speaker unfortunately, so I can't claim that as a fact. Also, all but one of the breeds of Ferrous dragons are quite unpleasant, so I imagine Steel dragons would not look kindly on being lumped in with them.
@victorvaldez8869
@victorvaldez8869 6 жыл бұрын
I can see as an alternate version of Steel Dragons if they did have the attitude of Ferrous Dragons being similar but more devious as a Lawful Evil race, constantly at the center of a web of favors owed & promise made that they do indeed keep. After all if it becomes known that you don't repay your debts you lose out on any potential future debtors. Perhaps in the Mirror-verse they are like that. I wonder how the Dragons of the Mirror-verse would look on their counterparts as well, as in that version of the multiverse Bahamut was an Iron Dragon, & Tiamat was the rainbow Dragon according to a thread in the D&D Forums I remember. From what I recall about what the the Gods of the Mirror-verse would be like from the D&D forum, mind you this was on their website a few years back, they had some pretty good re-imaginings. Some of the others other than Bahamut & Tiamat that I remember, were Gruumsh Three Eye, who's third eye was opened in a battle with the evil god of the Elves Corellon Larethian leader of the Elvish Reich. As I recall the dour & humorless God of the Gnomes Carl Coledust if I remember correctly.

Victor Valdez Lawful Nuetral can be pretty bad too, since many of them are extremely legalistic and show no leeway or mercy. IE: "Business is business"/"the law is the law"/"You should've read the fine print."

@victorvaldez8869 6 жыл бұрын
I have thought a bit more about the "Gods Of The Mirrorverse" post I read, & while they had the evil version of Bahamut be an Iron Dragon, I really would like to see him as a unique metal like he is in this version. As the Good Bahamut is the only Platinum dragon, why not have an evil version of him be the only Uranium Dragon? An evil Dragon God that literally can cause damage via Radiation Poisoning by his mere presence.

Good evening A.J. I very much enjoyed the video on steel dragons I have a former peasant wizard archmage as well as a drow wizard arch mage,both in Waterdeep that have cultivated a very good relationship with a young adult male steel dragon called "Cobalt" who was looking for new digs and seeing as our alignments didnt grate against each other we allowed the dragon to enjoy our newly purchased and refurbished tower as a new home! The only thing I didnt like about what I'm assuming is the 5th edit. breath attack is the fact they gave the mettalics two breath attacks not one...furthermore the original breath attack reads as follows.......the Steel Dragons breath attack is a cube of toxic gas. The dragon can monitor the amount of gas released so precisely that it can make the cube as small as it wishes or as large as shown on the table below,per side of cube in my draconic friends case it's 40' per side save -2 or die instantly....thats pretty damned accurate and much less chance of collateral damage as well. I like having dragon companions 🐊 We bypassed the antidraconic mythal by getting permission from mirt the moneylender and blackstaff!

my most recent character was a steel dragon wyrmling. the group ended up getting TPK'ed in the next session after she was introduced and I was devastated that I didn't even get to do any cool roleplaying with her. We decided we were going to play a different campaign after that, so the DM allowed a somewhat happy ending to the story by having her shift back, kill the sorcerer that responsible for the TPK and she just lived in town for the next few hundred years.

you could do it in a drow city, where they're both larping as prominent drow having a blood fued. involving many many underdark elves in a labyrinth of backstabbing, slaughter, hit squads, poetic posionings, intreging mystique to the point of madness, complex reality affecting grand magics(all for the sake of the fued ofcourse), people trying to "escape" the brutal gang war only to be... dragged right back in, paranoia & vindications of said paranoias. all in a good happy little drow city, where both lawfull good and chaotic evil might aswell be the samething. 😈👏😵 but they are dragons... and thus are O.P. resulting in even more collateral damage than usual. 🐉😱😰

After two extremely failed campaigns, I temporarily stepped down from DMing and will be using that as a plot hook for a future campaign. 3.14 Dragon That reminds me of the thalmore in the current aldmeri dominion from the elder scrolls universe, similar sittuation: after the near complete holocaust of the ayleids and snow elves on tamriel, and the seige of alinor by the successive empire of men utilizing the reality breaking numidium and the following oblivion crisis that emerged due the empires incompetence that resulted in the collapse of the crystal tower in the summerset isles, but not before mehrunes dagon's dremora were unleashed upon and in full view of the altmeri people, in their hedonistic excesses. it's not to hard to see why, when you account for the long view of high elves, why they are pretty much nazi's now. they're not all zealous 4th era high ranking justicars who are willing to slaughter all who oppose them in their plan to unmake the world, achieve apotheosis to become litteral gods as they simultaneously unbind their own deities from the prime material plane and destroy every other mortal race in the process. but they definitely do strongly sympathize given lorkhans trickery and the omni metaphorical "slow death" they've all been riddle with in place of an existence as deities where thought was manifest as easily as the immortal daedra they now envy and abhor. sure race of evil wizards, but they have a motive beyond irrational bigotry, to reset the whole board back to zero. from their perspective both litterally and morally they are the "good guys".
@firetarrasque4667

My BBEO isn't in control of the world, the players just decided too not finish them off. They currently control in total: The largest city in the continent (Named Utmno) and some land around them. They are bordered by: A dwarven country, which is currently the #1 on that continent. The Elves went through a civil war, and the halfling nation were basically reduced to a small tribal society. (That nation of halflings are closer to Dark Sun halfings then anything else. They are ALSO racist, just slightly less murderous.) They're pretty harmless. They can't do any more damage because... well, because they already culled/deported all of their enemies in the city, and they can't expand. I liked that BBEO, so i'm not too upset, it just makes my job harder, because now I have too use more densely populated/thematic continents and/or random islands.

Yeah, they might make a cool PC. I'll concede there. Probably wasn't towards me, but i'm in that same boat of no monster PCs. This may have developed when someone wanted to play a gold dragon without any of the downsides of being a dragon as well as random bonuses. They wanted full class levels, the ability to use not only their claws as hands but also their tail (Which they would use entirely for shields while still making claw attacks), extra starting gold, perfect and infinite perfect polymorph, an existing highly intricate lair, and a group of draconic allies.

I only just found this video, so I know it's late; these Dragons have been a favorite of mine for many, many years, and love it. I will say, though, that it's comprehensive, but is still missing information from other official books. For example, they are incredibly curious creatures, which ironically fits their feline-esque true form, and that they sometimes form conclaves and secretive groups with other Steel dragons, just to share information.

On that last bit, I do think a young and inexperienced dragon of one of the more shape-shifting types would make great player characters. Even a slightly older dragon who holds back their full strength to preserve their cover would probably be good, especially if they join a team that is a few levels in.

Steel Dragons: The most underestimated dragons ever. In my campaigns, no player ever discovered or even suspected a dragon was involved in a position of power. The Steel Half-Dragon prince was even a clue that was ignored when the king gave a public proclamation about forgiveness. I had genius level players, so don't judge them. There was a LOT of intrigue on their plates. They did figure out that the half-dragon was authentic and ceased their support of the rebels financed by the amathyst dragon.

This is one of several videos concerning steel dragons, and unfortunately, all of them contradict each other. In one of them, the steel dragon only polymorphs into one SPECIFIC human form, living out their lives as that person until the "end" of their human lifetime, at which time they sneak away and "vault" into a new human life, repeating this cycle until their true deaths. They do not have breath weapons in that version, and they can adjust their fear aura for different effects. I guess we have to pick and choose which version we like best. I am currently using an NPC steel dragon who owns a general store.

Gotta admit, this sort of thing I why I never got into Forgotten Realms as a setting. The steel dragon concept is cool, I like the idea of a specifically urban dragon, fascinated by the short, but vibrant lives of the lesser races. It reminds me of Celedyr from Shadowrun. The problem with Forgotten Realms is, the NPCs are all infinitely more powerful and interesting than your character can ever be! I get it, it was Ed Greenwood's personal campaign, and after Gygax split from the company, it became the default setting for D&D, and Greenwood and Co. wanted their personal characters to go on forever, but... Elminster never friggen' goes away! Even his lowest disciples and cronies are more interesting than the players can ever be! No matter how mighty and heroic your deeds may be, they will always be overshadowed by the fact that Elminster could've have done it by himself, with little-to-no effort! It takes the shine off everything the players can ever do! At least with Gygax's five wizards, they all existed long ago, then wandered off to other planes of existence, and practically never get involved with things anymore. Campaigns need to be first, last, and always, about the adventures of the PLAYER characters. Sorry, it will always be more fun and exciting to play the parts of Gandalf, Aragorn, or Frodo, than it will ever be to role-play Bill the Pony.

yes this would be a gem to play as, abit OP but hey... "fun" over eyetwitches and you could always spice up encounters and sittuations to even things out. but as for killing one of them... you could have a city go from prosperity and worshiping it as a known deity(in its rarely seen dragonic form. only to witness it be slain as a paragon of the city) to the whole city just falling apart in a mass psychotically depressed state, from suicide and cannibal cults, to mindlessly chaotic violent riots... and crimal gangs poping up out of nowhere, to the point where the whole environment starts as this chipper, up beat and affluent place where the party can relax, take it easy, see the sights... with bird song...🐤⛅ pre slaying to a post slaying equilivalent of a brutal dungeon crawl, where humans "are" the monsters and being a murder hobo is the only way to make it too the city gates as every good deed is brutally punnished, all to the sounds of muderous death screams and cries of disfiguring agony.... 😱🗡 hell you could even stretch it out with a quest to ressurect the previously slain dragon as the only way to "save the city", which would require going back into "the city" to get to the corpse to resurect it. 😉😈

AJ Pickett with a perticular obcession with eating the feet of the tall... 😵 i absolutely ❤ it. yeah but i was thinking, in the opposite to red dragons where it's all rivalry and intollerant bravado so they are most working against each other, in constant competition. with steel dragons because they eat so little aswell, couldn't they potentially work with each other, like buffing and supporting everything that each of them is doing in a city. rather than that side ways conversation across a street of two hopeless fashion victims, you'd have them finnishing off each others sentances often ending in: "nothing shall stand in the way of our power..." kind of like a cabal of telepathic mages with a demi hive mind, but there all egomaniacal dragons larping as high society.

I have an entire nation of hangry hobbits in my world. Worshipping a former PC, they were created due to the players failing to stop a violently racist cult of wizards worshipping Vecna from taking over a sizeable portion of the continent. After the PCs shrunk that nation down (But failed to destroy) that nation, the Halflings just kind of stayed around. They're actually worshipping a former PC. I just felt like talking about that. One of the more original pieces of my lore.

I'm just sitting here wondering how a dragonborn PC and a kobold PC will react to a PC that suddenly becomes a steel dragon unsure about their true identity after years of amnesia stuck in human form. Might be interesting to see how a party of five reacts when two are dragon biased and the others angered/terrified of their ally who they spent their journey with.
@AmaryInkawult
@AmaryInkawult 5 жыл бұрын
The Dragonborn (depending on which lore you go with) either praises them or spits upon them and the kobold most likely to suddenly be friendlier to the steel dragon and asks if he needs anything done and worship the ground he walks. While the elf and dwarf who's villages and forges were raided by dragons give the player the stink eye. Meanwhile this poor sod is just in shock of his true nature and is not coping very well with a happy/angry Dragonborn, a clingy kobold, an elf pissed her village was burned by a red dragon, and a dwarf who's storehouse of materials were "procured" by a gold dragon all giving him an array of unneeded attention to that detail about themselves. That poor amnesiac steel dragon will definitely need a therapist...
