This episode has such production values. A sense of urgency, strong characterizations and voice acting, and the animation to go with them - even the music timing is some places is so effective. Real effort was put into this show from all involved when the episode design was well aligned. The animation of Venger's intro, the music as Bobby is burying the box, Eric feeling the weight of Dungeon Master when he reappears, Sheila calling out to Dungeon Master at the end, the wind reversing as Dungeon Master emerges. All wonderful. When I saw this episode a second time, I realized how much was packed into it - it was impossible to recollect it all from the first time.

This is one of, if not the scariest episode of the show. If you think about it, it seems to have been inspired by Locevraftian work: an ancient, multi-dimensional evil so powerful that it's beyond human comprehension. You can't speak his name. You can't look at it without going mad (though Eric did haha). That's pure cosmic horror and I don't think it's a coincidence.

Great episode for a series that merges life lessons plus mythic, philosophical, religious and historical allusions. The Box of Balefire is an intriguing reference to Pandora's Jar and the Nameless One both the metaphysical and demon being common in many legends- the threat to civilization the heroes have to defeat and in doing so make paramount decisions to save it and their comrades.

It really killed me when at 20:18 Dungeon Master tells them, "prepare yourselves, my children" and I remembered that *spoiler* Venger is really Dungeon Master's son, so even though DM is mostly referring to the kids as a term of endearment, he is also referring to his actual son. After he tells them that there is a clip of them getting ready to fight and it shows some of the gang as well as Venger. Some foreshadowing perhaps? (Seeing as they didn't actually release the relationship of Venger and DM at this point, I like to interpret it that way.) It is also a little humorous when you think of it as a father-son relationship when Venger calls Dungeon Master "old man" at 20:37.

@TET - COM With the relative great success of the new Voltron cartoon I'd say it's the perfect time to try out a rebooted version of this dnd-esque cartoon series, maybe more of a soft reboot. Like have all the first 27 episodes be remained into a more 'morden' take of older, 80's cartoons (accompanied by much 'smother' and clean-ish animation) with almost the same plots from the originals (some of the episodes I'd love to see redone in a modern style!) but...the catch being that this version would be allowed to tread darker waters (there were quite a few dark moments all ready and even more implied heavier stuff as well) while still retaining much of that charming cheesy-ness we all love! (it was the 80's after all..) In fact the 28th episode was set to be the darkest one to that date, were the main cast, a gang of tired, angry and homesick kids were fed up with Venger and dungeon master and were even going to try and kill Venger, ending his reign of terror once and for all but would in the end decided to show mercy. I think a modern 'soft' rebooted dnd cartoon would really do well, let's hope one day soon-ish someone will pick this up and make a classic out of it I know I'd watch it!

The Nameless One is either an Obyrith or one of the Lovecraftian Elder Evil.

The Obyrinths deserve more attention!😞 And yeah, anyone making an adventure based off of the series could easily rebrand The Nameless One as either the former or an Elder Evil.

i thought they could of made this episode better.by getting all the characters zandora tiamet vengers sister karina n the rings etc.n even the other amulets in the dragons graveyeard to have a final battle against the being out the box.with dungeon master venger n the pupils aswell.

*A bit of a LATE repost but...* With the relative great success of the new Voltron cartoon I'd say it's the perfect time to try out a rebooted version of this dnd-esque cartoon series, maybe more of a soft reboot.

So, a question comes to mind... Venger has obviously been to the Underworld before, having enslaved Uugar (sp?) and his people. So it begs the question, after the end of the episode, when Venger is at full strength again, why doesn’t he travel back to the Underworld and travel to the Heart of Dawn (now that he knows the way), and drink from it. That would likely give him a massive boost of power, and could easily take on the pupils afterwards. A few counterpoints: His travel there drained him - Only because he was protecting himself and Shadow Demon from imminent obliteration. Under less pressure, transporting himself there wouldn’t be an issue. The Heart of Dawn is depleted - Certainly a possibility, and something that tremendous would take a long time to recharge, if it wasn’t a one-off like the Hall of Bones.

Most magic has to be restored and has a usage limit
@Dan261178 Жыл бұрын
I`m a little late here I know but its possible that the Heart of Dawn doesnt boost a persons power it just replenishes it to the level it was previously at before they were drained so it wouldnt have any effect on a full powered Venger.On an unrelated note I cant believe people didnt give credit to Venger for bringing Shadow Demon along with him,most evil characters would have just saved themselves and let their minions fend for themselves.Shows once again that Venger does have a certain honour about him.
@BYERE Жыл бұрын
@@Dan261178 It's certainly possible that it would just be a full restore, but that honestly seems like a bit lackluster. Why then would Dungeon Master be willing to try to take on The Nameless One after a little refill, when he was so scared before, and didn't think they had a chance even with the combined strength of his power and all their weapons? I definitely agree with you on Venger having a certain amount of honour. He is Dungeon Master's son, after all... I'd say he's Lawful Evil, rather than Chaotic Evil. We saw that after to destruction of Demodragon, where despite likely knowing that Presto had nothing to do with the victory, he accepted that balance had been restored (Venger being the one who screwed up by creating/freeing Demodragon), and parted amicably, despite how he could've just ordered his orc horde to capture the kids and take the weapons right there and then. As for protecting Shadow Demon... good minions are hard to find, so a good evil overlord makes sure to protect a valued worker :P
