Never... ever... EVER...E-V-E-R... volunteer for ANYTHING in ANY branch of the U.S. Armed Forces! At the induction center at Ft. McClellan AL, we were asked "Who here has a driver's license?" Thinking, "How bad could a driving job possibly be?", I watched in horror as my arm slowly raised of it's own volition. I was then promptly handed a ruler and hand powered edging shears and told "Drive these clippers over my lawn, and there better not be a single blade of grass under 3/4 of an inch, or over 1 inch high when I get back." You all pass basic training and are on a ship going to your first port. When you arrive it’s a working port you have duty every 3 days your working 12 hours a day and only have time for 2 hours off ship to enjoy yourself.... if you can get off ship due to the 3 person liberty buddy policy. Also all of you are not in the same duty section and when you have duty you can’t leave until the next day. Therefore non of you make it off ship and then it’s time to get underway again where you will work 20 hour days and a lot of times have to choose between sleeping or eating. Good news you may get Sunday off. Off means you only have to stand 10 hours of watch.... and go
