@henrybooth83547 жыл бұрын
Well shucks :-P- Dr Who has a lot of good material imo- It is often set in physically contained environments with interesting conflicts, puzzles and creepy af monsters. For instance, a massive dwarven crypt filled with long-limbed gargoyles that move when you're not looking and drain your life (time of the angels) An enormous empty library filled with vengeful spirits of the dryads bound to the trees used in the books (silence in the library). A buried warforged factory with 2 production lines, one for scouts and one for juggernauts, each faction producing as many troops as they can to throw into a deadlocked war. Both sides scour the now trapped and fortified training areas for a mythical power source to give them victory (the doctors daughter). Also, the creepy warnings and clues (such as statues in a crypt that don't match the physicality of those interred, magic mouth spells warning you to count the shadows) make it more engaging if it's a hack and slash 'bad guys won' kind of dungeon. Oh, and Pruitt... don't blink.

My group started White Plume Mountain for the first time this past weekend. I'm trying a paladin for the first time and went very group leader-esque in build (inspiring leader feat is amazing!). I am having so much fun with it! We just passed the inverted ziggurat. I can't believe how useful that 10 foot ladder I bought is proving. Worth its weight in gold!

Space Iguana: Some time ago, I ran a group through. I mean, I ran them through White Plume Mountain. When they got to the vampire, they drove it out of its chamber. The cleric and the paladin blessed the entrance heavily so that the vampire could not break back in. They spent 24 hrs resting, while the vampire wound up dying because it couldn't get back to its coffin. The paladin, having lost his shield in the fight, made the adamantine coffin lid into his new shield. Good times ...

If a party member has enlarge/reduce, they can use it to get the dragon out and the dragon becomes a friend who will help the party in a time of need, or prevents a TPK because an ancient dragon turns out to be this dragon's grandmother and is willing to not eat you because you saved her grandson so she gives you roast guard and sends you on your way

I ran my players through a custom one off called 'Mindartis the Mads Mausoleum of Mirages', where the Illusionist wizard Mindartis Galanodel is rumored to have an ancient tome called the Cerebronomicon. The tome allows a rouge illithid to become an elder brain, but normal humanoids would gain access to psionic powers. His tower appeared over night outside of Goldenfields, and used his Mirage Arcane to create heavy thunderstorms around the tower, flooding the crops of the nearby settlement. All through the tower were traps that had a chance of being illusions, and if it was an illusion, there was a risk of madness. At the very end, it turned out that the book was just an ordinary book, and the top floor is an observatory to track the stars (and those who live among them). Mindartis himself was in full insanity. Fun times, I can give you guys a link to the document if you want it

Rope Trick and Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion are great for resting in dangerous places like dungeons. Speaking of Mega Dungeons, I used to buy these huge graph paper pads from Office Depot. Each square was big enough for a mini to fit in. I would just draw out the dungeons on these things and use them as a playground for players to play in. I was heavily inspired by the Undermountain box set, as well as Dragon Mountain. Some dungeons would be big enough to hold small towns. Inside them were various creatures, the kind that wouldn't be accepted in the "above" world, would live their lives and go about their business. The Goblin market in Hellboy and The monster world in the movie Little Monsters are great examples of places that are connected to the world in some way but have its own ecology.

first off, salutations jim and jon. and on to my input, if you for instance have a cleric you might decide that the cleric could say pray to his/her deity once per day/week and place their holy symbol at the center of an area and resting there counts as a long rest. sort of a shrine mechanic that could be added. also want to point out that i love to add twists into a campaign. for instance unbeknownst to the players, a faction in the the city used polymorph on some henchmen and had them attack another faction in the city, the faction that was attacked sends the party off to defeat the "goblins" and so your delving into their city "dungeon" and at first you only run into a few but as you delve deeper the opposition gets more and more intense culminating in a pretty harsh throw down in this hallway and as you are about to strike the killing blow one of the goblins screams out in broken common "please spare the younglings" and you find out that this chamber beyond is the nursery or leads to the housing area of the city. and the only reason they fought was because you invaded their home and they wanted to protect their families. now the players have a dilemma, have they been tricked? are they the villains? who are the true masterminds? and did they almost cause a genocide? this could have far reaching implications, maybe a messenger escaped to beg aid from their sister city and now there is a much larger and stronger force of goblinoids marching on toward the city demanding the heads of the party.

I had a dungeon where a lost Orc Warlord had taken over a Goblin band and holed up in an abandoned Dwarven mine, and in there I did have a room with Goblin children and non-combatants and adherents to the old god who rejected the Orc Warlord's rule, but also a small room with bags of holding which turned out to be their toilets. The players found the conundrum of whether or not to kill Goblin children an interesting one, so I do recommend that element.... Also the reveal of a bag of holding being full of 250 lbs. of Goblin poo.

I had the same idea as their Shrine (short rest = long rest) idea, My party is going to start on the first level of a five level dungeon and at the end of each floor there is a fire pit with one magical log that will give them a long rest in an hour if they light it.. not sure if i will make the fire pit the magical part or the logs, I think giving them the chance to skip the long rest after a tough floor and save the log for later would be a good risk reward for them!

One idea I just came up with is for a large prison. The normal methods of moving around the place are limited, because the guards have checkpoints everywhere, and may lock down cellblocks if the party tries to force their way through. They still _can_ try violence, but it should be a last resort, or something the party needs to prepare in advance for. Instead, they might need to get a writ of some kind from the local governor, so the guards allow the party to pass checkpoints and talk to prisoners. But, depending on what the party needs to do in this place, they might not be able to obey all the rules they're under during their official business. Not if they want to accomplish their goals. Then you have the prisoners themselves, who don't recognize official authority. And if the party have been incarcerated themselves, they'll have to deal with the inmates directly. I'm imagining that the inmates have secretly created a network of holes or secret doors, that connect cells and other important rooms. My idea is that one of the prisoners is a wizard, and has secretly used Fabricate (requires no material components) to turn the cobblestone walls into cobblestone secret doors. And slowly, over time, he's just been making this network. The other inmates allow this, both because it's just practical being able to move around, and because they're intent on staging a breakout. The wizard himself wasn't confident he'd be able to make his escape alone, and so is working with others to create maximum chaos when the actual jailbreak happens. This deal with the wizard - this guy who is key to effecting everyone's egress - is the only reason all the various factions within the prison population aren't actively at war. Because prisons form gangs all the time. You've got the human supremecists over here, the orcs and goblinoids over there, the small clutch of secret infernalists in the corner (headed by a Tiefling Warlock), a loose web of thieves guild members secretly conspiring together, and the members of a tight-knit mercenary group that were survivors of some old army (who are loyal to each other, and are too badass for anyone to mess with). Of course, some dealing with the guards is going on. Corrupt ones are facilitating trade with the outside, or making deals with the prisoners in exchange for favors or future consideration. One guards might despise a coworker, and will help the jailbreak happen if it means setting up that bastard to die. Another has been promised a handsome reward from a prisoner who is the son of nobility. Another is dealing directly with the wizard, helping him out in exchange for wizardry training. The majority of the guards, however, are not in on the escape plan, and obviously would rather it didn't go down. This making the adventuring party choose between whether they work to keep the plan a secret, and rat out the prison pop (either to get something out of the warden or a specific prisoner, or simply out of a desire not to see violent criminals run free).

Touching on the question of resources, perhaps the best dungeon that deals with that question is In the Dungeons of the Slavelords (A4 of the series). A truly challenging scenario that forced players to think outside the box due to the fact that they wake up at the beginning of the scenario with no access to their gear or spells. All they have are their wits and whatever food/water/items they can cobble together from their immediate environment.

Here's a question you didn't touch on: PC skills interacting with ecology. How could knowing how an ecology works and finding different parts of said ecology and thereby predicting what comes next in a dungeon or what will be where effect strategy? For example, figuring out a way to piss off the gelatinous cube in the crab crack so it comes out and attacks the goblins for you, or anticipating where a mold or other plant monster might be and avoiding the danger and/or tricking other invading monsters into running into such creatures that you already avoided yourself.
@Arkanoid12127 жыл бұрын
Easy answer: wisdom check (animal handling, insight, perception, survival), dexterity (stealth), strength (athletics), etc. Advanced answer: creative and good roleplaying. Throw a torch in the crack, lure the mold with food and so on.
@Avigorus7 жыл бұрын
True. Intelligence (Nature, Arcana, History) could also help here and there, depending on what a creature can be identified by and where you are: natural cave would use nature more, wizard's tower could use arcana more (especially if the wizard is mad enough to have made the inside bigger than the outside with hypercube twistyness), ancient fortress could use history to be able to know how it was built to anticipate what could be where depending on how the more modern denizens chose to adapt it to their needs. Ultimately roleplaying is the answer to how to use it, the only real question is how to justify the character understanding said ecology.

About torches : thinking about lighting implies thinking about ventilation. There are no modern petrochemicals in medieval fantasy; the smoke from a medieval torch can and will suffocate everyone if you put it indoors without proper ventilation (like, any dungeon). Hence why people used candles and lanterns, never torches, for lighting indoors.

It seems to me that, unless it is a module, the dungeon has began to be phased out by players. Always turns into things that happen in the wild or in cities; but, not very common for it to be in doors. I personally used dungeons as set pieces, not all the time. When you go into one of my dungeons, the dungeon has its own story and there will be a part of the plot is revealed.

I think your dungeon design depends a lot on the kind of players you have at the table. If your players are more hack&slash, they are not going to care much for nurseries, living quarters and the like other than being 'more rooms to kill and loot in'. Same goes for if the players are avid roleplayers who would questions such things if you were not to include them.

Firstly there are two ways to get in. There is one option to go overground where the house is guarded by an iron golem, or they can can find a tunnel underground where they have to fight a roper. Then once they are inside there'll be placed where they have to fight mimics or a gelatinous cube. it'll be trapped to hell, and the final fight will have blink dogs and a spectator.

Eye of Beholder: the Legend of Darkmoon is a computer game, i know that, but this aside its THE best designed dungeon i have ever seen, in my humble opinion. Not to hard to come up with a PDF of the cluebook these days where everything is mapped out (40 pages of dungeon levels, yes it is extensive but not too complicated - its right there in this sweet spot). There are no gas spores in the 5th edition monster manual (EoB:LoD is 2nd edition actually), hmm... but those are supposed to explode in any case on the first strike, i guess. And mindflayer spaceships... we all know how that turns out in D&D done by the book... Spelljammer... *cough* *cough* Not recognizable as a spaceship as such. A bit of a hard spot for me. The concept is acceptable for airships, but... traversing the multivers in magical sailships? No, thanks, i'd rather stick with portals. You could do a sci-fi-esque spaceship, but... well, it could be done but there are other games where it fits better into the setting. Going with an oral description of the first Giger space jockey might be an interesting experiment, however ("look, it seems to have burst fro the inside"). Would players recognize it? The set was one of the best ever done, i think. Might be worth a shot. A little redone slaadi perhaps?

Need some help with something. I'm trying to design a dungeon myself, but I've kind of written myself into a corner. Here's the gist: A wizard essentially had been using a special magically shielded vault to hold a number of powerful, yet extremely dangerous items away from the general public. Unfortunately, one of the items supposedly "exploded" and created what can only be described as a sentient pocket dimension, of which is actually kind of a self-absorbed jerk. In order to get things back to normal, the heart has to be unraveled to even bear witness to the items. The question is, what kind of nonsense can I add to this to make things interesting, yet short enough to allow for a decent run-through? Creature types would also be appreciated.

Then I'll give you a small list of some of these dangerous items: Everfull purse (A coin purse that "creates" coins when really they only last only a couple of days then disappear) Blood of a rabid mimic A sword of dancing (Not a dancing sword, this makes YOU dance) (cursed) Coins of Transformation (cursed) Charm of Twisted Luck (Random advantage/disadvantage) Drum of Thunder (Creates shockwaves when played, unstable) (Supposedly what exploded) Heart of Wild Magic (Guess) The list just keeps going. Any ideas how to make it or ideas for it? So far I'm thinking a a sort of jelly monster that can appear and attack the players that is made of gold coins in the maze of whatever/wherever/whenever(?). And yes, wild magic DOES exist in this world.

I was thinking more of a series of rooms using each item as a sort of theme for each room. And a twisting maze-like set of corridors leading to each room and the players have to navigate the rooms and corridors to find this Heart of Wild Magic. Unraveling this heart though, that will be a trick onto itself.

Ah, I spy the telltale sign of a Crown Royal slip turned dice bag, the coming of age practice of table-toppers everywhere. 😜

What does everyone think about making D&D games based off of existing stories, specifically video games? I had an idea a while back on making a D&D game based on the world of Dragon's Dogma, and started work but it has since fallen somewhat to the wayside. Thoughts?

IWILLMAKEYOUASKQUESTIONS I think it's perfectly fine. I've used video games as the basis for campaign settings before and it was great to have the lore to draw on. And Dragon's Dogma is great game to use as inspiration!

any advice for running dungeon environments with large groups? my group and I always find dungeons satisfying, but it always ends up taking 2 to 4 sessions with my group of 8.

That seems about right, give out some task to the player like keeping track of initiative

What do you think Pruitt is always writing on that pad? Pruitt writes: "monster crap crack + gelatinous^cubed = ecology explained"......

Traps, Mimics, and Oozes, I think those are tags on nhentai and not just D&D things.
