The Wall Street Crash Of 1929:
The stock market crash of 1929 is known as the most catastrophic event in the history of the US stock market. On Thursday, October 24, 1929, the stock market fell 11%. On Monday, October 28, the market fell another 13%. Then, on, what became known as "Black Tuesday," October 29, the market fell another 12% and after this it took America more than 20 years to recover from the Great Depression, and even the Wall Street could not touch the same heights for almost 2 decades.
But how did America get to this point? What were the reasons:
The stock market crash of 1929 was not caused by one single factor but a collection of events on the part of investors, regulators, and international relations.
1. In the 1920s, there was a rapid growth in bank credit and loans in the US. Firms took out more loans for expansion. Although this led to more production than could be balanced out by demands. This made companies unable to pay back and hence, between 1923 and 1930, 5,000 banks collapsed.
2. Stock prices were not being driven by economic fundamentals but the optimism of investors who in turn were feeling excited because of the expanding economy and heavy production by companies. The average earning per share rose by 400% between 1923 and 1929. Those who questioned the value of shares were often labelled doom-mongers.
3. Borrowing money from your stock broker back then was a common occurrence, and with as little as 10% down payment during those times. This gave investors more buying power to further inflate prices when the market was up but put several in debt once the crash began. To cover debt people looked at banks, which were already in great turmoil as the US Fed instead of lowering interest, started raising it once the market crashed, which was utter foolishness.
