I was a extra at Dunkirk in the Netherlands for a couple of weeks. We shots loads of scenes on the lake with stukas coming in and explosions going. It was epic. Christopher Nolan stood next to us as the spitfires flew above us. I got a chance to talk with Hoyte Van Hoytema. He is also dutch so that was really cool. He showed us all how the Imax Camera worked. Brilliant cinematographer!

Hoyte Van Hoytema is a really versatile cinematographer. Looking back at his work, the cinematography of "Her" is nothing like Dunkirk's but both are brilliantly crafted and formalized.

In my opinion Saving Private Ryan had the best camera work ever, angles, shots, movements. Kaminski a real master. Dunkirk is the greatest film of the year.

I noticed Hoyte camera work has warmth in it that was absent with Wally, also noticed there is a bit of orange taint to the lighting.

@SHAHZEB MIR Yes, Wally Pfister's work actually makes more sense to the tone of the movie. It feels very natural and ease to the eye. Very immersive too. Hoytema's work is stylised over naturalism. Green and yellowish filter with pale lighting overshadowing the tone of the movie. Wally Pfister is definitely very underrated. Look at him, got 4 oscar nominations and 1 oscar win. Oscar win competing with legend Roger deakins and and that too before deakins winning oscar. It feels very sad that Wally Pfister is not as recognised and popular as hoytema van hoytema inspite of being a master cinematographer.

Agree. Wally fits Nolan's films before Interstellar. Definitely deserved the Oscar for Inception. But hoping Hoyte gets his for Oppenheimer. It's time.

In almost any other year Van Hoytema would have won, but this year it has to be Deakins. Not because after 13 nominations he is finally due. No - it's because Blade Runner 2049 actually does have the best cinematography, even better than Dunkirk. And that says a lot considering the latter was 75% IMAX, the rest 65mm and even handheld. But Blade Runner 2049 - that stuff's just from another world, man. Roger has to win. And he will.

Not a troll. Compare the OG blade Runner with Blade Runner 2049. OG Blade Runner is better looking. The World is more compelling and believable in OG BR. While BR 2049 has good colors but that's it. I'm working in this industry stop trying to tell me what I should know and what I shouldn't.

Thank God film is subjective. Blade Runner 2049 had plenty of soul for me. Didn't like the original blade runner much but 2049 is easily my favourite​ movie of the year and most of it is due to Deakins cinematography
