The MK1 is on sale on Amazon for under $2K, and the MKII is still the $2.8K. So I am wondering if spending the almost $1k extra is worth it to a hobbyist? For reference I shoot on an A7IV that I own since launch. I have a Sigma 24-70 and the 16-28 both at F2.8. I've been in the market for a lens with more reach (around 400mm). I've come to the conclusion that this lens plus the 2x teleconverter might be the best/most versatile combo. At half the aperture (5.6) it's still faster than the 3rd party 400mm zoom lenses and just as fast as the 100-400gm. Plus you have the ability to use the lens without the teleconverter which gives you a much faster lens. It's definitely pricey, but not really if you're in the market for both a 70-200 and ~400mm lens.

As far as focus breathing compensation goes, I've **heard** that the reason it hasn't been introduced on the FX3 and A7Siii (as much as I'd LOVE it on my FX3) is because the sensor resolution isn't high enough. I don't know how much resolution is actually necessary, but apparently the 400 pixels of horizontal width beyond 16:9 4K on the Sony 12 MP sensors (native sensor width on the FX3 is 4240px) isn't sufficient to support that feature. The 4K footage on the A7iv is 7K oversampled and downscaled, and either way the sensor obviously has plenty of extra pixels beyond 4K resolution.

No the Tamron 70-180 IQ is not as good, not quite as sharp, less microcontrast, worse bokeh, bad color rendition (skin tones lean towards yellow) and AF is slower than the Sony mkii
@wingcreator2 жыл бұрын
@@nrocha2466 Yes, your good breakdown of the differences is bang on. There are obvious reasons for the price difference, not just for the Sony badge alone. Nowadays, people are just comparing lenses more on the performance-price ratio than really saying a lens is amazing without arguing there are not enough differences for price differences! There is nothing that touches 70200GM2, PERIOD. If the budget is tight, YES, the Tamron is the best budget 70-180 (ok, it is not quite 70-200 as Sony, one of its shareholders is making Tamron making funny mm and TC not compatible FE lenses as not direct competition). However, if the price is not a consideration, then 70200GM2 is the new king of 70-200mm in terms of AF, image quality, and min focus 0.4m @ 70mm (at least until now).

Which lens did you film this video with? I just got the 70-200 GM ii, it is amazing.
@dunnadidit2 жыл бұрын
Most of it with the 16-35 GM and then that one segment with the 70-200 of course

The shot showing the A1 is the one taken on a different lens. I mean, it gotta be, right?

I have this lens but if I had it to do over again I would get the new sigma 70-200mm 2.8 and use the extra money to get another lens but I do love this lens but think I would be just as happy with the sigma at a lot cheaper price and I did get a new foot for it so I don’t need to put a plate on to mount it to a tripod and picked one up for my Sony 200-600mm lens also and I did get the 1.4 and the 2x converters and find that I use this lens with the converters more then I use my 200-600mm lens for here in Alaska for the wildlife here

I’ve read that Sony will never update the a7s3 and fx3 with breathing compensation because the megapixels are too low. Any thoughts on this?
@Donbros2 жыл бұрын
Bullshit, they did that on fx6 and it does not have a ton too
@RandumbTech2 жыл бұрын
I just picked up a used flawless copy of this lens along with the 2x tele. It’s so good, it feels like cheating. Yes, it’s expensive, but it will hold its value over the years and since it’s so light you will use way more than you typically would.
@Alexframesrj2 жыл бұрын
I’m was thinking buy the 400-600mm for wildlife but probably I will not use a lot as if I get this 70-200 with 2x Tc more versatile for many ways . Sure will be lot of extra money 😬

Option 1 or 2? (1) Sony 70-200 and 200-600 or (2) the new Sigma 60-600?
@Gabe7312 жыл бұрын
how would you compare this to the Tamron 35-150? I know it's not apples to apples but 🤷🏾♂️
@dunnadidit2 жыл бұрын
That’s tough, the range on the 35-150 is super useful, but boy is it heavy.

70200GM2 + 1.4x (98-280mm f4) / 2.0x (140-400mm f5.6) will give longer reaches. I played with my friends' Tamron 35-150 f2 / 2.8 which is fine but not something I would use often. The f2 at the wider ends doesn't make my work easier as I tend to use Samyang AF 50 II, 85 and 135 primes more often + my 1635GM / 70200GM.

I'm going to resist this one as long as I can but I want it with the 2x.
@wingcreator2 жыл бұрын
To use the 2.0x properly, 70200GM2 is the only Sony 70200 for the moment. Can't wait for Sony to fix the 2.0x usage with the 100400GM into v2 soon?

I really wish your reviews on camera related gear are in circulation to purchase otherwise it’s just pointless to show a product that can’t be found anywhere. Can you only do reviews who’s product is well distributed?
@dunnadidit2 жыл бұрын
It’s not really up to me. I do reviews as I can get ahold of things. But the shipping issues that are happening right now aren’t really under my control. Also, my videos stay up forever so sometimes you might see them when things are available and other times they might not be… 🤷🏻♂️ it’s nearly impossible to predict when products will be available.

cool lens. the one thing I don't like about Nikon lenses is it's hard to do manual focusing. Sony seems to have done a good job balancing all the features with their lenses.
