Yellow cards only last for one game. But in most leagues if you get 5 yellows through out the tournament you get a suspension, thats why you see yellow cards when they show the line up, it means that the player is in danger of being suspended for the next game if he gets another yellow.

For example, a player gets a yellow card in a game, it counts for that game but also, if it is a league match, it counts also for the league and, if he gets 5 yellow cards, on 5 different matches, he gets suspended for the next match. When you see a player in the lineup with a yellow card, means that, if he sees a yellow card on that match, he will miss the next match because he already has acumulated 4 yellow cards. So it depends on the tournament! In cups like the Euros, World Cup Champions League the general rule is you will be suspended for a match if you accumulate two yellow cards over the course of for example the group stage. In the league (Premier League, Serie A, La Liga etc.) the rule of thumb is that you’re suspended every 5th yellow card you accumulate.
