when we hear bass, we are not just hearing what goes on in the bass frequencies. rather, we are hearing "bass instruments", which have frequency components in the mids and treble, and these things will determine the speed and texture of the bass. if you play audio that contains only 20-300hz frequencies, you will hear that there is no "attack" or "texture" in the sound at all.

Nice review as always. I got the Davinci and love them for all the genres I listen to, including classical and dance. They've replaced my Pilgrims (disappointed by the lack of engagement) and my Simgot EA400lm (which i loved). I love the DaVinci for demale vocals such as Loreena Mckennit and for tracks by Louis Armstrong that some IEMs really have a hard time with. Also prefer the DaVinci with the likes of the Kodo drummers. They pair beautifully with the Onix Alpha dac.

also there is no real correlation between the number of cross-overs and smoothness/resolution. the more cross-overs you have, the easier it is to tune to a specific frequency response. however, the target frequency response itself might not be a smooth one. and davinci doesn't graph smooth in the treble, especially on 5128 rigs. i think this is on purpose and it is trying to mimic studio 4 in the treble, where there is a dip around 8-10k (on 5128, with tilted DF as baseline) and a peak after that. So vocals don't sound grating but airiness to the instruments is still preserved.

welcome back from your well-deserved trip Jay! So, after all the crazy hype for this IEM, this is quite ... disappointing lol. The syrup analogy is great, giving me a good chuckle lol. I'm a details/resolution-oriented guy, therefore the lackluster technicality of this IEM means absolutely a no-go for me, especially when there are IEMs that perform better technicality-wise at nearly half its price. The 4 great pillars at mid-fi market still remain at Hype 4, Pilgrim, EM10 & epz 530 for me. Next stop: Oracle MK3 mate !!

I have the Hype 4 and I think the timbre on the Da Vinci is MUCH MUCH better. The Hype 4 sounds artifical compared to the Da Vinci in my opinion. Both are good IEMs and I still think the Da Vinci is definitely worth it or at least trying it out. Keep in mind this is subjective sound.

@jayyaudio What I mean is that the treble can sometimes be "scratchy" on the hype 4 compared to the da vinci. The da vinci sounds smoother on the upper range. I am not sure if this is the correct way to say it but maybe the Hype 4 is way "too sparkly" where it can sound scratchy sometimes. Like I think even the Tanchjim Origin and the Da Vinci are smoother and less scratchy compared to the Hype for in the upper range. I hope it makes sense. Great review as always, Jay. However, I do feel the Hype 2 is a step down in terms of technical performance in comparison to the DaVinci. To me, it sounds a bit too dark. Not by a lot, but enough for it to not fall into my preference. The DaVinci goes for a similar sound but the bass hits noticibly harder and has more detail (not basshead level obvi but pretty hard) and it's treble may be smooth, but it is nuanced (at least to my ears). Maybe I'm crazy, but the Hype 2 doesn't even compete (in terms of detail retrieval) with the best $200 iems. Outside of the Hype 2 mention, I pretty much agree with everything else

Why are all IEM graphs U shaped, no matter how neutral they are claimed to be? Headphone graphs are flat in the bass and mids with peaks in the treble. Speaker graphs are straight line all the way. Is that why speaker audiophiles hate IEMs and headphones?
@jayyaudio5 ай бұрын
You mean balanced? If it’s a straight line it’s neutral, if it’s U-shaped some people say it’s balanced
@chinmayrasam5 ай бұрын
@@jayyaudio I mean neutral. no IEM has a straight line. It's always a gentle U. For instance even the Mega5est which is considered neutral with the best mids is a U. The mids are lower compared to the bass and treble. But that's not the case with open back headphones. They mostly have a straight line with the bass. And speakers have a straight line all the way. The ultimate goal of speaker guys is to get a straight line (from my understanding.) But even with the straight line, the speaker or headphone doesn't sound neutral. Even headphones with rumbly bass have a straight line with the bass. Why is the difference? Are IEMs are speakers incapable of delivering all frequencies to their fullest.
@Morphishful5 ай бұрын
@@chinmayrasam It's because an IEM bypasses all the outer ear anatomy that focuses and amplifies some frequencies while de-emphasizing others. Speakers in a room get to interact with your whole head. IEM just gets your ear canal and has to do the work of boosting/damping some frequencies the way your outer ear would have. That's one of the reasons why IEM preferences are so subjective. We all have differently-shaped outer ears. Speaker preferences on "realism" are a lot more uniform from one person to the next.

I actually have the opposite thoughts on DaVinci vs Doscinco. While the Doscinco is slightly more technical, airy, and vocals are cleaner, I think the DaVinci is more energetic and fun to listen to (I go to a lot of metal/rock concerts so I do have a slight preference for upfront sounds). I find my DaVinci unit's bass much more impactful and smoother than the Doscinco and I listen to mostly metal/rock. I do listen at higher volumes than most people so that might be a factor as well besides the potential unit variations.
