I was always taken by the Mac Leods norse ancestry ( must be my first name Knut), "Leod" meaning the ugly one in gaelic... Playing the pipes since 1985, I was also intrigued that their pipers, the Mac Crimmons seem to be of the same scandinavian stock, originally the Mac Hrodhmundurs ( in Ireland the Redmonds, alternatively the Mac Criomthains), sea-farers and warriors (and poets, bards, seannaicheadhs, bards...) Hold fast!!!

Yes many place names are also of Norse origin in Scotland. Especially around the Islands .
@knutclau705 Жыл бұрын
@@standrewpics considering the many norse/germanic words in scots-english it is far easier for a german brought up north of the "weisswurst-equator" (that us the river main) to understand a northern british accent, than a southern german speaker, say from bavaria or baden. For instance, my wife spent many a childhood summer vacations in Dorset and thus has real problems to understand english spoken north of the tyne, whereas I spent most of my childhood vacations in brittany and scotland (and being a GHP piper) having trouble tae understand "southrons"... The most hilarious anecdote might be the one when working at an excavation of germanies biggest celtic Oppida at Manching in the 90'ies (Bavaria) I met with a scotswoman speaking perfect bavarian accent and me (as a german) speaking with a notable "teuchter" slang (and piping as well), so the Northern connection is still strong, not only in the Innis Gall!

Can we plant a field of Rosemary around the Dunvegan houses ? #Dunvegan #Scotland Other habitable herbs and flowers? Perhaps the visitors could take home a bouquet of pressed flowers in a Dunvegan fair Price diary with poems 💐 ? 🙏 Lost wings and passports #scottstissue

Good stuff bud. I used to take bus tours there. MacLeod of MacLeod... a very fortunate family that survived the 45 rebellion. The stream that runs past the castle you may have noticed has some fine trout in it too. Lovely beginning and music. Great stuff my friend... hope yo had a good time in Skye. Nice one.

Thanks Fergus, Many midges around this time of year . May return in the Autumn, when not too many camper vans the size of buses on single track roads! And midges gone!

@@standrewpics I don't know what a midge is other than the fact that was my Dad's cousin's nickname many decades ago . I loved seeing this castle and the environs . My best friend is a MacLeod and that's what bought me here because she told me about the castle . She visited it a long time ago . Wonderful job you did videoing this . Guess what the best part was ? Your professionalism ... you did not insert your face all throughout this like most people do nowadays in this age of narcissism . Some of them don't even understand this concept of the creator being invisible . They make it all about them instead of the subject .

@@gardensofthegods A "midge" is also called a "no-see-um." It's like a gnat, only much smaller.

Beautiful 😍 What a treat it would be to visit . My grandfather on my mother's side was connected to the MacKinnon clan through his mother. Their name was McKinney which was changed from MacKinnon starting with 1st of 4 generations of William. Earliest I can trace is Lauchlon MacKinnon who was born in Isle of Skye in 1550 🏴 🇺🇲

Yes many Scots American connections, with the clearances them land owners that replaced people with sheep, many years ago. Thankfully this goes not happen these days! We only have unless wealthy people in government, in it for themselves, But that may change very soon I hope . Many instances where wealthy land owners have sold up these days , with land handed over the the local communities. The Isle of Skye , is a beautiful island but very popular with tourists these days . Yes I would recommend visiting Skye and this Castle , but there is many other lovely places in Scotland to visit as well .

Thanks for the great video. I am the decendant of Anne MacLeod daughter of Alasdair Crotach MacLeod 8th of Dunvegan and wife of John MacDougall 14th of Dunoile. I also decent from Murdo MacLeod 8th of Gesto and his fathers before him. Stange to think so many of my ancestors lived in that building. The Laird of Gesto were decendants of thr 3rd Clan Cheif and given the lands around Waternish as I understand it.
