It's a render distance bug / desynch thing.. same thing that causes flashlights from other peoples weapons to not appear behind you UNTIL you've looked at them. Or the old bug where footsteps would keep making sound if the person you heard wasn't in your line of sight/behind walls. Rust is a janky ass game
