The episode or Max's entire narrative in the first 4 episodes is one extended metaphor for a battle with a mental health issue (i.e. depression, anxiety, ptsd). The Duffer Brothers decided to send a powerful message to all viewers, but I think primarily the younger viewers who they know love the show, that you can defeat your trauma, but it takes a myriad of approaches. That being said, the entire episode was perfection. Who ever laid out the storyboard for this one absolutely killed it. There's not a wasted scene, pathos-driven dialogue, beautiful cinematography, and what many people would argue is the greatest use of music in the history of television. Also, FYI since you didn't know: the actresses name who plays Max is Sadie Sink, and she is quickly becoming a household name with this season and with some other projects she has killed. She probably has one of the more brighter futures in the industry after this series ends

The BEST single episode EVER! So action packed, never stops. The shoot out, Hoppers escape, Yuri turning on everyone, Victorys story about the past/his family and then of course Max. SO GOOD!!! 😬😳🤩

All of the items in the church; clothes, peanut butter, everything else belongs to Yuri the smuggler. This is his warehouse where he keeps his smuggled items. This is why he was instructed by Enzo to go there and wait.

Every single one of these teen actors brought their A game for Season 4. I have always seen El as the leading young lady in Stranger Things for obvious reasons and I didn't know if splitting the group up like this would work. Saying that Sadie Sink was amazing this episode is an understatement. Her love, sadness and fear is palpable. In my opinion, that scene was the best I've seen in this show.. I get chills re-watching with you two. I'm looking forward to your reactions to the rest of this brilliant season.

The scene with max is so powerful because it's a perfect metaphor for depression. Vecna represents death/suicide and the portal that she escaped through was created by music. And so many people who are depressed use music as escape of reality. And in the end it showed that the way to beat depression is the love of your friends/family.... But also she still had to fight and run towards the light. It represents that even in your darkest times, even if you have a good support system around you, you have to be the one to choose life and to run back to your friends/family. You have to choose love and choose life and not choose death and darkness. Even the song itself is so great for Max's story because the lyrics say "If only I could make a deal with God to switch our places" because Max prays to God to switch her place with Billy so he could live and she could die..... Really really powerful stuff

: The shooting scene is amazing. I watched an interview of Noah Schnapp who explained the whole process for shooting that scene. They rehearsed it without guns obviously a number of times but the scene that we get to watch in that episode is the first ever shot with actual guns (well, actual, I think they were blank bullets) but the reactions to gun fire is all genuine from the cast. And it's all been shot in one go. That never ceases to blow my mind ^^"

Who suffers or has suffered from depression himself for those, this episode is even extra hard. If you take out the supernatural and see it as pure psychology and the upsidedown as the personal state of mind you are in. This is hardcore, because here you are shown the hope that for many is not there to get out of it again. And even if it is there, you first have to manage to fight your way out of it on your own in order to recognize it at all.

Love this episode, even though it was extremely stress inducing. My emotion level turned up to 11, so much so that my roomie started knocking on my door asking if I was "OK". I assured her I was fine and why I was so vocal. She didn't realize that season 4 dropped and said she was going to start watching immediately. Fast Forward several hours later, I hear my roomie yelling from her room. I went out to the hall and waited a couple of minutes. When she came out of her room, she was shaken. All she said to me was, " At least Max is alive" with a half sobbing, half laughing voice.

Love Sadie. She popped off. But it's character analysis time. These past few episodes really show how Mike interacts with El versus Will. After he finds out that El was lying to him, Mike is very annoyed at her for several hours. In her darkest hour, he can't tell her that he loves her. In S3, he had a similar problem. He only said he loved her in the heat of the moment(and she wasn't in the room). When she asks him about it later, he tries to act like that moment never happened. Now, he only writes, "From, Mike" instead of, "Love, Mike". With El, Mike can't, or won't, say what she needs to hear. Compare that with Will, who Mike apologizes to in this for mistreating him at first. Will mentions that he didn't say what he was thinking, and Mike tells him that he didn't have to. Mike knows what Will wants to hear. And he says it without Will even needing to ask. With El, even as she's teary eyed and upset, he chooses not to. If you want to go even further back, in S3, when El breaks up with Mike, he brushes her off and is mostly annoyed. But the moment he upset Will, he chases after him, in the rain, because he hates the idea of Will being upset with him. Maybe I'm reading too much into this. But I also feel like they've intentionally hid Mike's inner thoughts from us these past two seasons so we could speculate. So that's exactly what I'll do.

Nice reaction, so now you know just why the timeless and perfect "Running Up That Hill" by the brilliant Kate Bush, stormed up the charts across the planet, incredibly still in number 1 spot in Australia and Ireland singles charts and on the Billboard Hot 100 in America a best ever position of 3, smashing the previous 1985 high of 30 out of sight.
