NSMB DS was such a good game that nintendo felt they could just rip it off instead of innovating. it's just ashame the people group the first game as part of the cash grabs despite it literally inventing the formula from the ground up.
@DuoStuff4 жыл бұрын
This is legit how I feel about the situation. The game was such a game-changer at the time, but because Nintendo knew they could make easy money off the formula, they really didn't try that hard with the others. And now people hate the first one despite it genuinely being really great.

I honestly thought new super Mario Bros Wii was pretty good. Sure not all ideas were super original, but they intrudeced some cool power ups and new level gimmicks so I think that it isn't really the best game but I think the power ups kinda make up for it. The gold power ups and squirrel power up (and I guess the peach crown but that one is really dumb) are not very good and I think the gold power ups are really the worse
@sonicmeerkat4 жыл бұрын
i'll admit 2 mixed things up by having a gimmick, it was mostly the console releases that simplified the level design due to 4 player co-op which lead to the main perception of the series, that and the near back to back releases of the sequels, 2 and U literally released a year apart and wii released towards the end of the consoles lifespan.

And the final castle level? One of the best 2D Mario stages. Glad to see it get some love cause it really deserves it. It's yet another Mario launch title that set the bar high, even if it didn't necessarily get the recognition it deserved at first (like Sunshine). Also, the minigames, wow. That mode is what deserves a spin-off for the Switch!

By far my favorite NSMB series, this game introduced me to one of my favorite videogame franchise (well I did for already with older Mario games, but this game I got the most fun out of it). It’s genuinely sad that many people considered the overrated Wii version the best version of all this game series, being talked about the game so much, having a large amout of theme songs being remixed, etc. I’ve always felt that NSMBDS was some sort of a 2D version of 64 (probably how Nintendo implemented perfectly 64DS’ soundfont and models). I do still have my game card on it’s respective case, I still play it up to this date. And so much passion I do have for it, I’m working on a unofficial tribute as a form of a remake of NSMBDS by editing most of the levels of NSMB2. Obviously it won’t have the amount of creative enemies, level mechanics from the original game, due for how different NSMB2 is compared to the DS game.

I've personally always thought the powerups shined best in their use in the Mario Vs Luigi sidemode. The mega mushroom was given to players in last, giving them a way to catch up, the mini mushroom being mostly a detriment given to players in the lead. And the blue shell was always fun to zoom around the looping levels in, and was an absolute menace to the person you were playing against. Shame they've never brought it back, because I feel there's so much more they could do with Mario Vs Luigi. Luckily, there's a good fan recreation called Mario Vs Luigi Online, which adds a couple new maps and powerups (though you can turn them off).

Well that's an interesting perspective. You make good points, and as someone who hasn't played a main series Mario game since Sunshine, I may have overlooked this one in particular. I grew up playing Super Mario World and All-Stars on SNES, so when more 2D Mario games came out after the series moved to 3D, my initial reaction was like... extreme skepticism that any subsequent 2D Mario games could be as good as the classics. At the time, I was also thinking how much I wished Nintendo would just make more 3D games since the hardware limits preventing 3D were finally overcome by then. Basically, I spent my childhood years dreaming about the magical possibility that there could be 3D games on a lit-screen handheld console someday, so when all we got for DS was a port of 64 and some new 2D games, I felt incredibly let down. I started tuning out of the series without giving it a chance. Didn't help that I was a very bitter and angsty teen at the time.

I loved this game, i spent hours upon hours and was the first game i completed 100% and now i want to play again, thank you!

This game feels more slippery and floaty to you compared to the new games because you're playing as Luigi.

I don't remember how I got the game or my first encounter with it, but I do know that this game was the main game of my childhood. I loved it. And heck, I still do to this day! Like you I feel it was really underrated, like not many people were talking about it. But I'm happy to see someone talking about this game, especially multiple years after it came out

@DuoStuff4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the ORIGINAL original DS? The phat? Man, those were rare to come across. I remember after my Lite broke, I bought a red one of those. XD

This game is what introduced me to Nintendo and kickstarted my interest for gaming as a whole. Man i miss those times i would play Mario vs. Luigi with my friends.

The blue shell is absolutely amazing, and it saddens me they haven't brought it back. Same goes for Mario Vs. Luigi, it's so fun!

The multiplayer versus mode was a masterpiece and I honestly wish they brought it back. I spent hours playing that mode with my friends. This and Mario Party DS were my childhood

Holy shit I can't believe this game is so old. The gap between now and New Super Mario Bros. is almost as big as the gap between New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World. I remember buying this at launch because I was so hyped that they were finally bringing 2D Mario back. People forget this game was a big deal when it came out. I actually like that they took away flying power ups for this one because it put the focus back on platforming and tightened level design. Thanks for this video, it was really cool to see how someone who grew up with this game felt the same kind of things old guys like me felt growing up with the NES games. Nintendo really did manage to recapture the magic of those titles for a new generation.

Oh boy do I love the blue shell power up, but oh boy do I hate it when it automatically puts me inside the shell and I bump into a wall and fall down a bottomless pit behind me.

This isn't just a New Super Mario Bros game, this is *the* New Super Mario Bros. A great game that should be recognized as such.

this was the first ds game i ever played, and was one of the reasons I ended up getting a DS for myself because at the time I only had a GBA. this game has a special place in my heart, i played it so much as a kid

I honestly kinda like the whole series anyway, never seems to get too boring for me cause they made a formula that works. But DS is the one I’ve played the most and for the longest time, a lot of nostalgia but it was just so good anyway. I got my DSi when I was 6 and I’m nearly turning 18 now, and I STILL pick it up every once in a while. Great memories, great game and a great video to remind me and inform other people of the recognition this game deserves!

I remember playing this game for ages because my friend gave it to me because he didn’t like it but I played for ages and absolutely loved it. I played it enough that after a few years I 100%d and I was sad there was nothing left to do made me sad booting up this game makes me nostalgic

13:48 Yes I too remember when Nintendo made megalovania with a skeleton mario boss fight then proceeded to make the undertale soundtrack for the newer games complete with fish mario, lizard mario, and goat mario.

You bring up some great points here! This game gets slept on way too much just because it belongs to a franchise that ended up over saturated. The blue shell powerup is one of the best in the franchise and I will die on this hill.

I thought I was the only one who ever thought this was a good Mario game. I personally think this is one of the best Mario games EVER. It was saddening to me that no one ever talks about it. I thought it was forgotten. This was the first Mario game I've ever played, and it took me 2 years to beat this. Yeah, I used to really bad at video games, but despite me being bad at it. I was having a lot of fun with it. When I first beaten it, It felt like my life was complete. It was really amazing how this game got me to be so obsessed to the Mario series. I will never forget about this game.

When i was a kid i only had my nintendo DS and played this game so much you can't even imagine. I've memorized a lot of things like how to get the blue shell easily and beat 1--2 in less than a minute. Every time i played multiplayer with my brother i crushed him in almost everything.

This is easily my number 3 most favorite game on the DS. With Pokemon heart gold and Super Mario 64 DS being the tops. Really great memories with this game. Love it a lot and brings back a lot of nostalgia
