Hi Veronica. Is it legally safe to announce that the fragrance is a dupe or an impression? I've read in social media, maybe in a fragrance lover's group on Facebook, that while the bottles are fair game for lawsuits, the juice is not. And that actually makes sense to me. Having written that, I wonder if the different clone houses leave it up to all of us to determine what they make is trying to duplicate? By the way, some make original fragrances which is very cool too. Have you discovered an original that you love?
@VeronicaSays
@VeronicaSays 5 ай бұрын
@twitterblackdove yes, what you've read is correct. The "scent" cannot be trademarked or legally protected as original design, so it stands to reason that saying something is a dupe or inspired is fine since there is no legal restriction preventing the replication of a scent. And yes, I know many make originals, too, but because of the heavy production of and focus on dupes (at least as marketed to the U.S.), finding an original is a needle in a haystack activity when it comes to some of the popular dupe houses (which is how they've come to be known in the U.S. market).

@@VeronicaSays The biggest problem I have with buying fragrances that cost $200 or more (or even approaching that amount) is that I'm always disappointed by the performance by nearly every fragrance. Either my skin has become like a sponge as I've aged, or time and several bouts with Covid have reduced my sense of smell, but I rarely get the beastmode performance that reviewers on KZbin rave about no matter the fragrance. Perhaps it's because I bought some real powerhouses 30+ years ago, during the days before reformulations and limitations on oakmoss and other compounds. I never needed a stopwatch to time performance back then. Whatever I sprayed or splashed in any kind of weather lasted from morning to mid afternoon or later.

I was watching a video of a young lady visiting this beautiful shop in Dubai. The owner has been in the fragrance business for many years. He is surrounded buy rows upon rows of fragrance oils. This whole controversy about dupe fragrances seems very strange to me, given the popularity of dupe clothing, shoes and accessories that are sold in fast fashion and department stores. Zara in particular, became popular with a business strategy based on duping the couture designs featured in the runway shows. Practically everything that is mass produced is a dupe of something more expensive. If people are truly against dupes, then don’t buy dupes of ANY kind. Buy original items only for fragrances, shoes, accessories, art, photography, home furnishings, etc.

I personally refuse to spend >$100 on scented alcohol, so if a dupe of a $300 scent profile that I love exist, I'll get that and spend the rest of my money on my life's necessities. Sure, I can get decants of originals, but I'm not a collector; when I buy my perfumes, I WEAR them. 20ml decants cost as much as a 100ml dupe where I live, so decants are not an option for my daily drivers. Fragrance elitists just cannot understand the mindset of the non-wealthy, istg

As long as the company is making it clear that they are duping a fragrance, I don’t have an issue with dupes. There are some fragrances that I want to experience that I may never have a chance to because the price is too prohibitive for me. I do have a problem with some of the people that are in several fragrance groups I belong to belittling people who purchase dupes and acting far superior for having the originals. This is a hobby for me, and I feel like the “bullies” ruin this for some. To each their own is my feeling.

@@VeronicaSaysconsider a dupe sometimes, as a cover for a nice song; sometimes you want the song done differently, say crossover from R&B to Rock and you appreciate it but you vibe with the cover more, sometimes you can still prefer the real thing, in some cases, you find out about the real song from its cover. They’re times when the cover artist throws in his own twist that makes the song better suited for workout or dinner date or listening to in your office (cross over frags), sometimes the cover artist blurs out particular vulgarity that makes the original song hard to listen to, sometimes the cover does it more emotionally, sometimes done in a cheaper studio, sometimes it’s same sound quality. It’s art in itself. Finally there are songs on your collection you like so much that you repeatedly want to hear covers of, no matter how many times Perfume duping is like music covers

What bothers me about the Dupe discussion is that when MFK and Initio even Xerjoff, drew inspiration from Rose’s vanille to create Gentle fluidity, Atomic Rose and K’bridge club the girlies were not upset. Infact only have good things to say about those fragrances and fragrance houses. When other companies dupe Atomic Rose and Gentle Fluidity suddenly people buying those dupes are morally eroded and support the theft of perfumer’s intellectual property. When Sospiro & Thameen pumps out dupe after dupe, packaged differently their creations are called masterpieces.

I was at TJ Maxx and I sampled two fragrances that were out of this world. The presentation was well done as well (A leather bottle and a great sprayer). I bought both of them and it turns out that they are clones of two high-end fragrances. Basically $30 for both instead of $400. With fragrances, I do not feel the same way that I would do if I was wearing a fake Rolex. I can live with fragrance clones because 99% of the population (if not more) would have no clue as to what I am wearing. I do not feel weird wearing dupes. It is just a scent. As it is, many of the high-end brands are not even making the same quality products they used to make years ago. The products are more diluted and yet they are not making it known. Quite deceiving as well. And no, I would not wear a fake Rolex.

I buy Equate toothpaste compared to Tom’s Fluoride Free, it’s stated on the package Big box stores, grocery stores dupe almost everything, stating compared to. Most of us can’t afford $200-$300 perfumes so dupes/ clones serve their purpose, but we need to be informed before the purchase.

Hello Veronica, thank you for your lovely channel. It is always a highlight of my day. I agree with many of your opinions. Great presentation. As a hospice and palliative care physician that witnesses death and dying on a daily basis I have trouble relating to the nonsense surrounding a dupe. Personally, I worry about other things. I own high end, dupes, designer, niche, celebrity, and out right " cheapies". I love them all. I also feel every woman deserves to smell good. Many hard working women are single moms, on a budget, going to school, ect, and so forth. Honestly, I think dupes are great. How different are perfume dupes from dupes of computers, phones, shoes, cloths, houseware items, and basically anything one can think of????? Walmart and Target are the ultimate in grand duping for the masses that may not be able to afford high end luxury items. Regardless, I think there are far more important issues on the planet to worry about than perfume dupes, for example death, dying, and children starving. For those internet trolls that have nothing better to do than argue over this topic, I say find a hobby and maybe volunteer at a soup kitchen, shelter, or hospice. I love Dossier. Did you know if you send back one of their products they donate the fragrance to someone who cannot afford it? Thank you again for the thought provoking and wonderful video. Hello Veronica! This is an awesome video. I, personally, don’t have anything against dupes although I would rather buy the original if I can afford it. But then certain fragrances that had been discontinued or hard to find, like Gourmand Coquin, I can only experience thru dupes, that’s when I really appreciate what these dupe companies do. Also, I found an excellent dupe for Lost Cherry that I can add on or layer with it to improve Lost Cherry’s performance or longevity….so thanks for these dupe houses. I have a big fragrance collection and 3 dupes that I consider as amazing as the original ones. I really enjoyed this video, thanks! 👏👏👏

I like your idea of purchasing dupes of hard to find fragrances or fragrances we like but know it’s just special occasion only when we wear them

I found this video super helpful, as a newer perfume enthusiast. I recently bought a UAE brand's dupe of BR540. I haven't even smelled BR540! but i wanted to see what the fuss was about. It's a quality perfume, no doubt, with GREAT presentation. But it's too saffrony for me and is a clothing-saturation beast. I didn't read far enough in Fragrantica. I gambled I'd like the scent enough and there was no smaller bottle, but the price was right. Your views were extremely fair and balanced, and i thank you for making this video as well as giving tips on the fragrances you're really happy with. Go Veronica!

Loved this video, Veronica, excellent points! I’m with you. I want transparency to rule the dupes. If the scent is a dupe, tell us. Tell us on the site or at the shop that the scent is an ‘homage’ or inspired-by. It is our money we’re spending, and as consumers we have the right to know what product we are being presented with. We’re adults and WE will choose what to buy, but tell us the truth from the get-go.

I have loved fragrances all my life but could never afford trying different ones on my skin so dupes for me have been a way of exploring smells and sensations I couldn't explore before. This has helped me try these to further decide if the original is really a purchase I'm willing to make or if I could make. Sometimes the originals are unreachable for me so dupes it's a way to enjoy master pieces (fragrance masterpieces) I would never be able to enjoy any other way. I agree with you regarding wanting to know ahead of time when a fragrance is a dupe or an inspiration. I'm all for transparency and not knowing seems shady in my opinion. Thanks for being direct and honest. I love that from anyone but specially from contact creators. I don't like to feel pushed one way or another and specifically I don't like to feel pushed to buy anything. 😊😊

What a great video! I love everything you said in this one. I have mixed feelings about dupes, but I do purchase some. A couple of things I wanted to say: first off, I also hate the DUA bottles! I did just order some though since they were having a big sale. We'll see how that goes. I've never smelled a DUA scent before. 2. I love the brands that list their original inspirations (i.e. "inspired by D&G Light Blue"). So, for that reason, I do often look at the brands that do that, like Oakcha, Alexandria, Dua, and Dossier.

I agree 100%. I know the ones you’re referring to that gave you pause and I thought I was alone in this but I was also pretty shocked and immediately thought “are they allowed to do this?”. I have a couple of dossier and one dua fragrance. I was turned off after buying several dua and finding this odd underlying burnt rubber scent to all but one. Oh and I have one oakcha, I bought the oakcha version of gypsy water after burning through my $200 bottle in one summer and the oakcha one is equally beautiful and equally appalling in its performance but I can afford to burn through that bottle 😂 Alexandria and be layered have been on my radar for a couple years but I generally prefer to just buy original scents personally, though I’m not against dupes, that’s just my preference.

Rumor has it that legal action was taken against the company. I don't know if there is any truth to that, nor do I know if anything came of it. Legally, fragrance cannot be trademarked or copyrighted, as I understand it. I don't know if the same applies to bottle design. No idea. Oakcha's Gypsy Water dupe definitely performs better than the Byredo version! And I know what you mean about the burnt rubber thing in Dua. Ew. 🥴

I have a mini-size Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt, and a decant of Byredo Bal D'afrique - both of which I really like. But they are obviously very small and don't last long. I ordered the Oil Perfumery rollers to match each of those, in hopes of layering the perfumes with the oils to extend the longevity, and also stretch out my small bottle. :) It works pretty well! It's also easy to throw the oil roller ball in your purse for touch-ups to keep the scent going throughout the day. Just a little hack I came up with, although maybe everyone has already thought of that! Veronica, love your channel, thanks for everything!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on dupes! I've had mixed success with dupes in the past. Alexandria and Alt are the ones I've had the best luck with. Dua disappoints me nearly every time so I've stopped purchasing from them. Mostly I look to dupes when I'm interested in a high end fragrance that I don't have anyway of sampling. While the dupe may not be spot on, it will usually give me enough of an idea if I like the scent enough to pull the trigger on the OG. I sampled dupes of MM Coffee Break and Bond 9 Greenwhich Village and fell in love with both enough to buy the originals. But I am perfectly happy to use Alexandria's China Affair and save my money from purchasing Coromandel. 🙂 Its so nice to have options!!

I love to perfume myself; that is my base when bying a fragrance. If my ethical and moral standards are not compromised I will buy what pleases my senses. This week, I wore my Junoon Noir by Al Haramain twice and my L'Aventure Femme by the same house. At the time of purchase I was not aware of the dupe situation. I was a signature fragrance lady for decades and started with this passion maybe 3 or 4 years ago. Today, I will buy those two fragrance again. It "itches" me when is a dupe from bottle to scent. It is a one on one situation for me. Looking gorgeous, Verónica! Have a blessed weekend!

My goodness, the energy and time spent being judgemental and arguing over a hobby so many people love; smelling perfumes, is crazy! I have a few dupes from DUA, most that I own are from Alexandria (top quality to my nose) and I tried samples from Genre. Almost all of them are dupes of discontinued perfumes. I do have some samples from these houses of perfumes I wanted to try before looking into finding samples of the originals from niche houses that would be expensive to buy even in a sample format.

Hi Veronica! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about dupes. You really nailed what’s in my mind. I didn’t go as crazy as you did but I do own some dupes. Alexandria is a great dupe house and I successfully tested some out in the past 2 years that I have or will eventually upgrade to the original. I had times that I almost purchased the look-alike fragrances but my higher self kept restrained me from doing it LOL! Recently, the prices of fragrances are being jacked up to a point that I can’t justify myself of buying the original without knowing I’m 100% loving it. With the price of the original 2ml samples, I can probably get a small dupe bottle and fully experience, and see if I really like the smell with full wear. In that sense, dupes would be a great way to experience them 😊

When you mentioned the FB arguments that really hit me hard. I have loved fragrances for years, but being a part of one such group for just 6 months nearly destroyed my love my hobby. People are petty, small minded, and really there to win a pointless argument that has no baring on their life, of any of the rest of us. It's mind boggling to me. I am one of those people, that would never purchase a fragrance that is just shy of being a counterfeit, but at the same time I do not see a point of spending $300 when I even like the $40 dupe better, or it 2ce as long lasting. I also have fragrances I would never "exchange" of a duper version. For me one such house is Chanel, there is just something about them, that is never quite there in an "inspired" version. The truth of the matter is, that all of the fragrances we encounter have a place and a market. Judging people for what they buy and wear, is simply not cool. Let us just not forget, that even the most expensive perfume cannot mask the stench of a skipped shower or two. Shower, spritz, move on with your life.

I agree that it should be disclosed what the fragrance is “inspired by”. Without reading/watching reviews, people wouldn’t know.

Hi Veronica! I absolutely adore fragrances, but my financial situation doesn't allow for me to spend a lot of money on it. I set myself a 20€ (=20 USD) monthly budget for fragrance. Therefore, I go for affordable dupes or the so called cheapies. I love listening to your videos, knowing however I very rarely will hear about a fragrance that fits my budget. It's ok, because I like hearing you talk about fragrance, I get ideas of fragrance profiles I would like, can look for smell-alikes on fragrantica, etc. Your sensibility and moral compass show in this video, and I appreciate it very much. Thank you and all the best from Portugal 🙂.

I must tell you that I loved your thoughtful and free ranging discussion on this topic. I found myself watching a dupe going for three times it original list price on FragranceBuy because it was deemed a “replica” of a famous fragrance. It had a waiting list. I thought that was too far.

Hi Veronica! You have a great reference to the issues discussed, given your sizeable fragrance collection, and vast experience with many purchases. You could have named this video, "the good/bad/ugly"! FG is invaluable, as you noted. It's a must to refer to before a purchase, get opinions, determine notes, etc. I agree with you 100% as to consumer's knowing *ahead of time, what they're actually buying. There is a lot of "wrong" going on. Yes, the guys are brutally opinionated! But imo, the majority of masculine fragrances (not marketed unisex) are far superior in quality than many female ones. Or perhaps, I am just drawn to their notes/accords? Men take a stand with conviction! Tfs, it's information like this that helps us all to make better decisions. Social media platforms (and monitored chatrooms) have evolved into hostile territory some days! Some people have no filters and just want to stir the pot.🤷 Francine

Hey girl haaaaiiiiii!!! 💜 Good morning, gorgeous!! I love starting my weekend with some coffee ☕️ and a freshie video from you! I don’t have a lot of dupes - just two from Julianna’s perfumes and one on the way (and a handful still on my wishlist that I am waiting to be restocked) plus a number of fragrances I received for review from Dossier as well as some Middle Eastern gems 💎 but I totally agree with you - to each their own! 😊 I haven’t tried Alexandria Perfumes yet! I def appreciate some of them for scents that are either too expensive or impossible to find (like YSL Baby Cat which I am waiting for restock) but I am with you where I really appreciate the original bottles and scents as designed. Also, thank you so much, queeeennnn!!! I was able to pick up BDK Rouge Smoking from So Avant Garde with your fantastic discount which took it from “out of my price range” to “delivered this morning and opened while I was watching your video” 😂 I just adore you so much, Veronica!!! ♥️ I hope you had or are having such a beautiful vacation in Vegas!!!!!! 🎉

Even designer fragrances have jumped in price so much in recent years that just this past month I’ve decided to pursue dupes first and designer and niche second. The quality is so good (nothing like the “Imposter” series from the 80s😂) that I hope it brings at least the designer companies’ prices back to earth.

Hi Veronica, I totally agree with you about wanting to know that something is a dupe of something else before I decide to purchase. One house that I feel does not make it very easy to tell what they are duping is la Rive! Even when you search to find out what the dupe is it’s very hard to find listed. What are your thoughts on that house? I have a couple of the dupes and they do smell pretty similar, but for the most part, the bottles look cheap and I’m just not sure. I have the dupe of hypnotic poison, as well as Tresor nuit.

It definitely crosses ethical lines. I feature dupes on my channel every other day and speak about this from time to time. Blatant copying has become the order of the day…and lawsuits are allegedly flying about. It’s like a switch from the covert bottles to in your face counterfeiting.

Aromatix just couple days ago was talking about the lawsuit against one of these most blatant copycats. He seemed to have copy of the paper that lawyers served to the retail seller, telling them they have to destroy their stock. I think copies and inspirations have their place, but not blatant copying of all designs. I think too little is talked about designers copying themselves others. Like Porto neroli is quite near to that 1471 that I suppose is the oldest still existing perfum

Are you aware that alot of your very big Niche names are also DUPE HOUSES lowkey? Tiziana Terenzi is very unabashed about her juices. Almost all of them smell like the next big thing (and this is me putting it mildly), who will sue them? Noone? Because they have a more affluent clientte? Even Creed. God so many of them. Designer Brands that suddenly have Oud variants and flankers out, will we say they are 'drawing inspiration from' Middle Eastern perfumeries meanwhile when Middle Eastern perfumeries make Juices that smell like Western Designer brands, we call them dupes and they should be sued? Lol Too many layers to this entire Topic. Way too many.

I agree I wish if it is a direct copy of another fragrance they told us the only issue with this is it can get messy since smells are subjective if it's forced to disclose whether or not a fragrance smells like another it can be argued against always....and sometimes two completely different fragrances and notes end up smelling identical when they are separate pieces of art...but I agree if the intent is to dupe a certain fragrance I wish they would just tell us...

This is a great discussion Veronica. I purchase niche, designer, dupes etc. as long as it smells good. However I personally limit how much I am willing to spend on any one fragrance. I agree that certain brands should be more transparent regarding whether they are duping another fragrance. I guess that is one benefit of those dupes where the bottle and name are so similar to the original - leaves no confusion for the consumer. Although I purchase niche and designer, I really appreciate dupes because I feel some designer and niche fragrances are overpriced. I don’t care how good it smells or how it is presented. I don’t feel any fragrance is worth $400. I think it’s ridiculous when in reality the cost of producing that fragrance and packaging is no where near that amount. Great video as always.

I love fragrances like many. I have over 100 bottles mostly designer fragrances. I try the niche fragrances and quite frankly wonder what the point of spending over 300 dollars on a fragrance? I just can't justify the cost even though I can afford to buy them I don't. I also haven't found a niche fragrance that makes me what it that badly. There are some lovely unique ones, but none are calling me. lol I only own a couple of dupes and enjoy those and because they are very good dupes, I am happy with using those instead of the real thing. Love your channel btw.

Agree with you 1000%...👍👍 I sometimes buy dupes as pseudo samples. I have the Club de Nuit Imperial dupe of Delina (Exclusif). I enjoy it. Not sure would ever want to buy the real one though... (not a big fan of rose) I bought Nebras not knowing it was a dupe for the Billie Eilish one. That was a little annoying... Like the look of that dupe bottle waaaaay better! Bought a BR540 dupe and tested another, I can't stand that medical note in it. Not interested in testing the real one. Glad you mentioned Alexandria. I've been meaning to check them out because I'd really like to sample Moonlight in Heaven. If I can find decent dupes for Kilian, PDM, TF, etc. Especially for frangrances known for bad performance and-or an expensive price tags, the dupe option sounds very interesting!!! Who wants to pay over 250$ for a fragrance that has the reputation to disapear after 3 hours of wear? ''Shaming'' people for not buying fragrances that cost 250-300$ is just down right ridiculously mean! Not everyone can afford price tags like that. And like you mentioned, fragrance collections do not appreciate in value over time. I'm glad to have a bit of everything.
