Great video, thank you. Before pinning the pants to the paper I would make sure that the grain line of the pants align with the dotted line of the paper. If that is off by 1/2 to 1" the new pants would not hang right. I did a lot of sewing, just not copying the pants, but I think that is a very important point.

wonderful tutorial as always. Only comment I would make is that I dont agree with not having to add seam allowances or have to worry about seam allowances on side and inner leg seams. As much as some of the seam allowance has remained at least a 3rd of it is shaved off in the process of overlocking so its something to consider if you wish to also overlock your jeans later so you dont end up with a tighter hip and leg area

I love the idea of using a piece of cardboard. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. I have been using my queen size bed to cut everything. I finally did buy the roll of white paper to use! But I will definitely be getting the cardboard to use as pinboard thanks. Learning from you as always. I already made the boxers for my husband and the sewing machine cover. I will be cloning my clothes next!!

This was useful, I'm making a costume for a claymation puppet and found things I can use on your tutorials. I just tool a picture of the seam line inside out and sync to my big screen the zoomed it to size and traced the pattern.

Thiw is a great video and thank you very much for this. I have a question though. Why didn't you pin the pair of pants, inside the seam allowance, which is the accurate shape of the trousers and add the seam lines afterwards?

This is really great. Thank you for taking the time to do the tutorial. I have a question .... How did you decipher the grain line, I looked through the questions and I did not see it, also went back and watched it again and did not see. Could you let me know which video it was in or how to decide on the correct grain line. That is where I have ran into problems in the past. Thank you again so much.
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 9 жыл бұрын
Kelly Dannemann Think of the grainline is always going to be parallel to the selvages, so I try and make my pattern as straight as I can when I draw it on my pattern paper, using the pattern paper marks as my guideline. Then I draw a straight line, using these same pattern paper marks within the pant leg. hope this helps.

I liked the content of the video, although I wish you'd published this video in HD resolutions. A lot of the detail work was too fuzzy to interpret in 240p resolution. Still, this is very good content and I look forward to your videos.

We create and upload all of our content in HD. This video does look like the only size option is 240p. My guess is that it is an encoding error on youTube's part. Part 2 and 3 seem to be fine. I will work on getting a new version uploaded so it can be viewed in HD. Thanks for pointing this out, I don't know how I missed this.

How do you determine where to put your notches?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 10 жыл бұрын
I usually like to put it on the curvier part of the seams. If it's a simple straight seam, I just put it in the middle. These notches are for matching two seams together so I think if you at least have one on your seam, you're doing well. :)

I would like to know how to duplicate pants that have elastic in the back waist...can you explain that to me? Thanks for the video!!
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 жыл бұрын
If it were me, I would trace the around the back of the pants up to the hips. Then trace the crotch curve up to the waistline. Instead of tracing the side seam from the hipline to the waistline, just draw a line straight up from the hipline. This will make it so that your waistline pattern is bigger than the finished waistline and allow you to add a gathered elastic waistline in the back.

hi, do you use a hip curve if your doing men pattern as well?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 5 жыл бұрын
you can but use the more straight side. it just blends a little better then doing a straight line. It also depends on the style of the jeans. You just really want to avoid any points and have all the lines looking smooth

Is it that hard to measure one particular size of one person and draft it over a paper by steps by steps coz the method u r teaching is not for the business purpose it cant be possible like that.. on the other hand we cant even order the pattern online like urs BTW salute to your effort

I have a pair of pants that I want to recreate but they have a back zip and flat front that's sort of triangular. Any tips? (I'm about half way through the vid atm)
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 10 жыл бұрын
you can definitely do this. I think I tackle the zipper section in the second part of this tutorial. The main thing is to see where the seams are in your pants and breaking down the individual pieces of the pants. That's how you know what you need to make a pattern for and a back zipper may be less complicating the a front fly, like mine, as sometimes these are just incorporated into the center back seam. good luck!
@allieg6401

Thanks :) after thinking about it its just the yolk at the front abd zip at the back I could probably put an invisible zip if ut doesnt have one already - haven't seen the pants in ages lol.

Darling, there is soooo much easyer way to make a trousers pattern. Like the right way. Ask a pattern maker how to! its easy! it takes me 20 minutes to make full trousers pattern with pocket linings and all seam allowances! so does for most pattern makers

Everything is cool,but you have to take in account that the same pattern will behave differently in different fabrics ,just saying 😊 so the pattern itself is not enough,you need to be aware of a fabric as well ;)

Been going through hell my entire life because my inseem is 36" and I was a size 10...now I am a size 22...thirty five years later and companies don't sell 36" for woman unless it's a big and tall woman's shop which someone out there should start up for woman in the WNBA.

You really need to condense your explanations of what you're doing. For example, you spend way too much time saying where you're tracing from and to. All you need to do it lay it out and trace it. We can see where you're tracing from and tracing to. You could shorten this video to 10 - 15 minutes by not explaining so much. We can all see what you're doing, just do it.
