Matt finally gets to fly his PSS built Durafly DH-88.
This thing not only works it totally rocks. Catapulted to the top of my hit list. - Matt
The De Havilland DH-88 Comet was designed to win the 1934 MacRobertson Air Race from England to Melbourne in Australia, the beautifully sleek Comet not only won this event but went on to set several records. Several Comets were built for the race but the striking scarlet "Grosvenor House" comet won comfortably in a time of 70 hours and 55 minutes. It would be fair to say that the DH-88 is probably the most stylish of the Golden Era racers, bearing in mind that most airforces were still flying bi-plane fighters at this time, the Comet, with its ultra-sleek lines and 255mph top speed, was a glimpse of the future in the early 1930s, the construction techniques developed for the DH-88 were later used on De Havillands most famous son.....the amazing Mosquito!
The Durafly® ™ DH-88 Comet is a faithful scale reproduction of this most elegant of race planes, it is constructed from tough EPO foam and is nicely painted in a deep scarlet, the final touch is courtesy of the pre-applied white waterslide decals, which help make this model really stand out both in the air and on the ground. All servos are pre-installed as are the brushless motors, ESC, and retracts in the screw on engine nacelles. The Comet is very practical, the 1100mm wing is removable for easy transportation and the huge canopy allows for easy & fast access to the ever-popular 2200mAh 3s Lipoly (not included). The scale detail is typical Durafly® ™ quality and features scale retracts with a nice slow operating speed, a front landing light, scale exhaust stubs, superbly molded cowls, purpose-made spinners, and counter-rotating props.
The full-size DH-88 Comet was designed for speed and as a consequence, didn't suffer fools at lower speeds! Durafly engineers have taken the best of the Comets attributes and managed to build in nice manners at lower speeds, the end result is a superb flying model! The DH-88 was of course designed for racing and the Durafly® ™ Comet will not disappoint fans of high-speed models, scorching low passes never looked so elegant! Because of the Comet's impeccable manners at lower speeds, there is also plenty on offer for scale pilots, and landing's & take off's are drama free courtesy of the counter-rotating props and a steerable tailwheel. Once again, Durafly® ™ have broken the mold and set the standard, just like the full-size aircraft, this model has quality, style, elegance, and performance, re-live the Golden Era of Air Racing with this amazing DH-88 Comet!

Mate, you've inspired me. I've had a couple of these gorgeous Durafly DH-88's now, it is undoubtedly my favourite plane ever bought.....and I've had a few!! Because of this video I have pulled the wreckage of the bottom shelf, gutted her, stiffened her up a bit and now am just waiting for the right wind to throw her off the slope and hopefully see this awesome aircraft fly again....even if it is unpowered. thanks for thinking outside the square.

Nice flying Matt, and glad my comment on the reflex (ailerons up) was useful.

Matt, good to see you got her sloping. I see at about 5.58 min mark it almost turns into a giant ball of red foam. I bet your heart skipped a beat. Looks good in the air, happy flying.

Differential on ailerons usually refers to the ratio of up on one side to down on the other side, so you don't get a yawing affect induced by the aileron that is down in the airflow under the wing, the effect of this is like doing a turn without any rudder, the tail is lower and the nose is pointing away from the direction of the turn, Frize ailerons have a configuration that allows part of the aileron to protrude into the to airflow to balance the drag from side to side.

It's amazing the flight that we can make when slope soaring without a motor. No batteries problems

The plane isn't designed for the speed or forces experienced in slope soaring. It's an excellent plane, in any form, but you don't even go to the slope unless the wind is 20 mph plus. Foamies aren't designed to fly in those conditions. The tape was a precaution based on advice online. - Matt

Thanks for the heads up. The wing has plenty of washout, I was just worried that it would get odd at launch, which it really doesn't. - Matt

Yes that is correct and differential ailerons should deflect up further on the side that is up, this will be effective washout and reduce tip stalls.

Great video, now you need to do this with an AXN Cloud Fly Floater Jet. I have two of them and love to fly them in thermals and try to do a little slope soaring on the bluff line near where I live.

Adjust for wash-out (ailerons up) rather than wash-in (ailerons down) for improved handling, unless the plane already has enough wash-out built in. Nice looking scaley, I've had a lot of fun with a similar P-51 on the slope.

Mm, funny thing is you need a few degrees 'UP' ailerons to reduce tip stalling, NOT down. This then acts in a similar way to creating some tip washout (note also up at the trailing edge of the tips). For info.

I am afraid to say your understanding of flaperons is actually backwards. Stephen Glasson's comment is correct. Also, up ailerons (called reflex) forces the model to fly faster to stay in the air, increasing speed, not slowing it. "Aileron differential" is a term used to describe ailerons having more up travel than down to prevent adverse yaw (yaw due to aileron lift and resultant drag) and to prevent tip stalls at low speeds full aileron. Keep learning and sharing! Cheers.

PS - Just like my PSS Macchi 202 it looks like big a big hill in light winds will show it off to it's best; ~10mph from that hill should do it.

Also, could be wise to dial in some elevator with those flaperons. Ailerons down, elevator down. Ailerons up, elevator up.
