What I can’t get over is JT was born in 1960 this first album came out in 81. If he started playing bass at 16 that means he wrote all these lines with only 5 years experience on bass. Crazy.

@a-ha1118 I didn't say I believed the article, but it wouldn't surprise me if he did get some help, I know when Duran had become successful, he did get bass guitar lessons, he admitted that himself. Blonde used session musicians but you would never know.

this has been one of the best videos I have watched in forever. watching the heat build up in your forearms and fingers, shaking it off. Dedication to the jump and energy and precision and power that John has consistently delivered for 4 decades. Playing the whole album at the pace you're going. Best concert in a long time. Thank you. I'm an aspiring bassist (at 52). Inspirational. You rock the fuck outta it.

Props! J.T.'s basslines are no joke! I never much cared for Duran Duran until one day I decided I needed to learn Rio simply because that bassline is so killer even if one doesn't particularly care for the band. I have been hooked ever since. Combing through their discography and discovering the many gems found therein has been a joy. I have not seen them live in person. But I am imagining the energy has got to be electrifying especially when they were in their prime.

Andy and Roger had been playing at least 7-8 years by the time they joined so it’s crazy to me that John picked up the bass so quickly. He probably knew the bare minimum in terms of theory if anything at all yet he knew how to hit all the right notes. It was the perfect combination of musicians at the perfect time. Still is but back then it was lightening in a bottle. GOF is a workout but super fun to play.

I’m a drummer and I only got 2 words for that: NICE! John Taylor was almost criminally under appreciated as a bass playing musician until quite recently? Even so, I heard brilliance in the very first Duran Duran song I ever heard “Girls on Film”. Have you considered doing any of the B-Side tunes from that “era”? I’d love to see your rendition of “Faster Than Light”? I don’t think you need any praise from a complete stranger, but I enthusiastically approve of, and have deep respect for your musicianship, skill and perhaps most importantly, how comfortable you are playing these songs! It’s not work when you wear those expressions! Smooth grooves, Kristian! 🤌

Bravo ... well nailed! Back in the 80's in Highschool I taught myself all the drum parts to a variety of Banshees albums ... I would come home from school and sit down at the kit and usually play through the entire Nocturne Live Concert album - note for note ... did same with Tinderbox, JuJu and many others. A little later I taught myself all the Guitar parts by John MvGeoch and play through the entire albums ... it's a discipline and something all musicians should do. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

Kudos for doing the whole album straight through & Thank You for doing so as many (not all) takes uploads like this for granted as theyve bren brought up in a society were most social media sites are free... I didnt start playing bass until the start of the 90s & like most i couldnt buy a good bass guitar but instead bought what i could with the budget i had & i bought a beat up old Squire Columbus Jazz Bass Guitar from a well known bassist where i stay but his days of playing purely punk had long gone & i put it about that if he was interested on selling it then if i agreed on the price i'd buy it... I went round to his house & to cut this story short i paid what HE was asking as id been seriously bitten by the bass guitar bug & i needed a bass guitar to practice now , with the latter obviously being in 1992 , sometimes it just goes that way as i played it cool & point out how badly damaged it had become from being in a Punk band to which he plugged it in hit a string & said " Well It Works " I left paying alot more than i should have but i was happy to now finally having a bass guitar i could teach myself to play & i cut my teeth on the Duran Duran Album " Rio " I was already a fan of their music & though i started out on drums & learning basic chords that are regularly used to write songs i had no intention of playing tge bass guitar until i heard John Taylors bass lines & the sound of which id finally find out what bass guitars he used which was the Matsomoku made SB range of their bass guitars... You have to remember even in the 90s it could bet difficult to find out who used what instrument & after 1 year of ripping the skin off my fingers i didnt even know you could get various heavier or lighter gauge strings... Now this might sound odd to some but i swore the limitations & hold heavy strings were along with how badly it was set up i was going to use this bass guitar to practice & take its every fault & use it to make me a better bassist as sure enough once i bought a new bass guitar & had lighter strings on it i could move all over that bass guitar with such ease & im always in a way thankful for that seriously beat up Squire Columbus Bass Guitar as after moving from that on to a great bass guitar was night & day & any inspiring bassists shouldnt say no ti a bass guitar because its beat up & murder to play as that will see you up for playing great for the rest of your bass playing days... As i took the concept from practicing Shotokan Karate with wrap around leg weights & wrist weights & spent 3/4s of my training time with them on but once i took them off the speed my hands & feet could reach was amazing , so for any aspiring musicians of all indtruments i say: " Sure it would be great to be able to buy a great bass guitar right away but never walk away from a bass guitar thar makes you work even harder to get better on it " Its that old saying of " Each To Their Own " plus today you can pick up amaxing bass guitars with great build quality/with active or passive should you want it & necks that dont see you dislocating your fingers to reach certain notes... I , for a man , have no issue with having small hands but to do the things i wanted to do but physchically couldnt meant i had to (badically) invent my own way of reaching certain notes or doing things in away that were what they call these days as great " Economy Of Motion " & i was in 2 professional bands with one that was signed i have no qualms as to how it all panned out except i wouldve made sure no members were married with chidren as in the end it wasnt our talent as songs writer & playing Live but the harsh reality of wanting to pursue your dream or you decide your best needed at home but i will say it took me 10 years to get over the group disbanding... Finally , I have heard nothing but bad things about the Aria Pro II SB1000 Reissue Bass Guitar with regards to note sounding anything like the original Matsomoku made vintage Aria Pro II SB1000 bass guitar but this Reissue is the first ive heard one rather than hearing via word of mouth that they dont sound like the originals but it sure sounds fine to me... Though you have to remember that John Taylor used the original Matsomoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 bass guitar as his go to workhorse bass guitar for playing predominantly Live but over the first 3 Albums he did use the Matsomoku made Aria Pro II SB1000/Matsomuku made Aria Pro II SB700 & a few other various Aria models... But as you can hear that unless someone is going to be a complete over the to purist & state that such track John used this bass guitar & not that bass guitar , as with his Matsomoku made Aria Pro II SB1000 bass guitar he could play all the songs without changing basses as the SB1000 has that very had 6 way tone selector & when i went to see Duran Duran Live on many occassions i never felt that the Matsomoku made original Aria Pro II SB1000 bass guitar didnt do a great job with each song John Taylor used it on the first 3 Albums but by the 4th Album " Notorious " John had previously already been looking more & more into other bass guitars to give him a different sound... Though by the " Notorious " album i still was playing drums & acoustic but always went out of my way to go & see Duran Duran Live & for quite alot of the Tours that i went to John went on stage at the start but had now changed to the Kubicki Ex Factor Bass Guitar but he always liked to use his original Matsomoku made in Japan made Aria Pro II Range of bass guitars in some songs as he knew the fan's loved them especially on the first 3 albums... As at the start of the 80s every bassist i heard wanted a very clean/clear bright sound from their bass guitars & every signed bassist was looking bass guitars that delivered a sound that stuck out more & was very clean & clear sounding why he chose to use the Aria Pro II SB1000 bass guitar , as did Sting/Cliff Burton & Jack Bruce as just a few who also loved the sound they could get from them... Again Thank You for the upload now ive actually heard an Aria Pro II SB1000 Reissue bass guitar i must admit im surprised as to how this playet got it sound like tge originals as a few uploads from certain stores that sold them made sound demos & a review & i will agree that on those 2 uploads those 2 Aria Pro II SB1000 Reissue Bass Guitars did not sound like the original... If i may ask what Amp.did you use & did you play it through any software going via through a Pc that would enhance your sound!.. In light of this still ongoing coronavirus and its variants stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world.... .....

Thanks for doing this and I can see how DD is more souful and Simple Minds is more technical and a workout., love both basses though. Lexicon of Love, True, Haircut 100 incld. Pelican West, Ultravox, Split Enz, The Fixx, Sade. Whatever of those grabs ya, and if you can play any Cocteau Twins that would be a treat. I only saw them in concert once. play through or only some songs to see you play would be just so great because you play them perfectly.

You played Is There Something I Should Know (a joy to my ears, anyway), which was not on the first album, but a single released in 1983, two years later. The first CD issues, dating back to the end of the 80s, had To The Shore replaced with ITSISK.
