Indeed, this video is always refreshing to watch. My reaction may be due to its smooth flow from the slow demonstration of individual notes into the final rendition that gives non-musical viewers such as myself a whole new insight on the bass line in the song.

Spot ON! I take no shame whatsoever saying Duran Duran's Rio album is imo, one of the top 10 albums ever. When I first heard John Taylor, my mind didn't say "boy band", it said "who the heck is that great bass player?!"
@jtaylebon7816 жыл бұрын
JT is so underated as a bassist. He deserves far more recognition. This song has one of my favourite basslines, ever!
@zodieman17 жыл бұрын
Absolutely the BEST DD song in my opinion. The bass line is quite varied and the ghost notes are a John specialty. Zuma, you NAILED it!! Keep up the great work.

Mr. Zuma. I have "favorited" all your bass lessons. I really enjoy hearing the isolated bass from all these great D2 songs. Will you have time to do any more? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to hear more of your great bass. Thanks again. Mark in California.

@mrlee192 - A ghost note is created by striking the string normally with your plucking/picking hand but muting it with your fretting hand. It should sound like a percussive thud or maybe a little sharper if you are using a pick. It's basically selective muting if you want to look at it that way. It brings the funk and moves a piece along quite nicely. You probably already do it subconsciously.
@zumazmusic14 жыл бұрын
@blackworm27 - no problem...I took the song in ProTools and looped these parts and you are absolutely right, those two notes should be a half step lower. I will adjust the video info and possibly redo this or at least post a video response. Thanks! A combination of playing it the wrong way forever and ear fatigue when I'm trying to relearn these lines is not a good combo!

Another perfect job! OK if anybody could answer this it would be you. How do you rank JT as a bass player? I mean on those first two albums he sounded like a seasoned pro and he couldn't have been over 22 and had been playing bass only a few years from what I hear. Pretty classic stuff for such a "rookie!" IMO. Would like to hear your opinion of him and what some of your favorite points of his playing are. Thank You for these videos.

The "ghosties" are when you play a note with your right (or picking) hand and mute it with your left (or fretting) hand. It's sounds like a tick or a thud. It's a must-know for funky bass playing in my opinion.
@RallyCat90912 жыл бұрын
The more I listen and play this bass line in particular, the more I feel as though Geddy Lee could have written it. JT and GL are my major influences on bass and music that features synthesizers in their sound. I often wonder if they ever checked out each others music, that would be kinda cool to know ... :) Also Zuma, you really inspire me to keep getting more verse in my chops. Thanks man.

Hi, great cover! I've been searching online for any info on the nut width on the SB-1000RIB reissue I'm thinking of getting but haven't found anything. How's the neck on yours? I'm into jazz bass kind of narrow necks, but yours seems to be much wider with generous string spacing. How would you compare it to a jazz profile of 1.50"?
