One example: Nick helped to engineer RIO. He was mixing and editing that album to its atmospheric perfection. He had to finish the record before flying to Sri Lanka to join the others for filming. Also, I watched this concert from 1981. Nick's keyboard parts for "My Own Way" was super awesome-Latin disco strings and moody monophonic space pad sounds.

So during that break-up period when John and Andy got their rock on with The Power Station, Nick, Simon, and Roger made one of the best records ever produced, "So Red the Rose", as Arcadia. You didn't mention it, but probably know about it. I remember being mystified by it back then (huge Duranite, high school), and damn if that entire album doesn't still sound great today. Nick's masterful ambient sound design really shines on it, especially in the filler track "Rose Arcana", and the 3 or 4 minute lead-in to "Lady Ice". That song is a journey, and one of my favorites to this day. If you are going to talk more Duran Duran, bring it up, and more importantly, listen to it if you haven't! It's got guests such as Grace Jones and Sting on it, too. Great stuff!

Nick's playing and programming, along with Simon's voice, is integral to the Duran Duran sound. No wonder that specifically they have been the only constant members since 1980. So nice to see and hear Nick's work being appreciated, 'cause I feel a lot of the time he's been dismissed or simply overlooked as a musician. And he's the #1 reason I wanted to start playing keyboards myself! This was great, thank you.

I would like for you to review the keyboards of Acardia 'So Red the Rose' - its one of my all time favourite duran duran (although not duran duran???) but it sounds like them - and its Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon who wrote it - so it counts. The album drips with atmosphere, and detail to sound - is just sublime. I still dont think - despite their much improved recognition - people ever fully appreciated the talent depth duran duran had - when you compare this era to say Big Thing (1988) with tracks like ' Do you Believe in SHame?' on it (again haunting keyboard I think you will be ever so 'aroused by') - the Arcadia album - just brilliance. Goodbye Is Forver and Keep me in the Dark - my fav 2.

Hi, you have a new female fan :) from America :) Yes Nick Rhodes is essential to the Duran Duran sound as well as look of the band. I agree there is alot of subtle genius musicianship he brings to the band via the keyboard synthesizers. He is also very interested in innovative technology and being creative. I love it that even in 1985 he had a computer monitor sitting next to his keyboards for an Arcadia performance - the Election Day song. Very progressive. He is very artsy and has fantastic fashion style. My favorite thing about him. He is by far the best dressed keyboardist. A Prince - yes! His hair has always been so perfect (as all the DD guys). I also think he may have possibly lived in Renaissance times in a prior lifetime and brought forward into the future (our present) his talents from those times (the Mozart era). He loves art, fashion, photography, film and of course music. A true Renaissance guy! 💜

It was quite a pleasant surprise to see a Duran Duran video on your channel, very well done, Vaughn. You touched on many of the little things that made them the band they are today as they were very "together" from the start and had a singular focus and two strong managers (Paul and Michael Berrow) who did all they could to help them along. When the original 5 members got together they produced a sound like no other band at the time. I have to agree with the Alan Wilder comparison as Nick Rhodes is sort of the producer/arranger of DD, or at least it's what he eventually became. As you stated, their songs are so well crafted that if you played them on just a piano they wouldn't lose their power and for some songs it might even give them more weight in a classical sense. As for what you could do for upcoming videos on DD, reviews of their albums would be amazing. There is so much to delve into you would have material for months. They created their own sound but lately they have had a tendency to try too hard to stay current and it has produced some mixed results which are more than worthy of a little discussion. Also, as you have done for Depeche Mode and with other bands to a lesser extent, you can do the same for DD by going over the various stages in the band's career from world domination in 3 years to an even faster fall from grace, to their first comeback, and then the second, and then the third, and the effect it all has had on their sound. I look forward to whatever it is you have in store for us.

Great video Vaughn. The subject matter caught me by surprise because Nick Rhodes is / was my absolute idol. He’s the reason that I wanted to be in bands. He’s the reason I wanted to play the synthesiser. He’s the reason my early synthesisers were Roland. The sequence arpeggios on the first two albums blew my young mind. Planet Earth, Careless Memories, Sound of Thunder, Rio, Save a Prayer, Hold Back the Rain, The Chauffeur. Although, in general, the later albums have not always been strong throughout - there’s always been a couple of songs on each that are standout tracks that have Nick Rhodes DNA all over it. His visual, his dalliance with pop art, Andy Warhol, his side projects The Devils (with Stephen Tin Tin Duffy - the original DD singer) or Arcadia or TV Mania (with Warren Cuccurullo) are all ( as you say) massively underrated. Anyway, I could ramble on for hours which I’m sure nobody wants. Great choice of topic my friend. Excellent 🎹🎧

I agree And where TV Mania was a very strange but interesting sample project, Arcadia was awesome. I just mention the songs "Lady Ice" and "El Diablo" as 2 examples from Arcadia. Very edgy and spacy almost spiritual tunes. Duran Duran also has some great B sides. " Kanada" "Late Bar" "Faster Than Light" "Secret October" that is worth mention.

Nick's an integral part of DD. He is definitely an understated genius. Before Depeche took over my psyche, DD was there. One of my favorite groups from that time to the present. Well presented Vaughn! Love the cat analogy for Nick. I had a poster of the group in their new romantic phase on my wall during high school. Definitely not a dog rocker, but I did like Power Station (and Arcadia)! BTW the Chauffeur is my favorite all-time track. You've got good taste. Please focus on their early synth stuff like this song and save a prayer etc. Maybe the live album Arena and other early synth stuff.

Thanks for highlighting Nick Rhodes talents-they are so underrated by many, but thankfully appreciated by many too. I'd say he is a major force behind Duran Duran, and it goes beyond just keyboards and synths, but in the development of the band as a whole throughout the years; a major technical, artistic and media savvy genius. And, to cap it all, he is a consummate professional and gentleman.

When I was 13, all girls and quite few boys were into Duran Duran and I was the black sheep saying I like Depeche Mode. I couldn't care less about their look and Simon Le Bon, but I always had huge respect for Nick Rhodes. I still listen nowadays to Save a Prayer and the Chauffeur, along with some earlier stuff. His knowledge of keyboards and experimentation certainly helped building Duran Duran success. Similarly, there are keyboard players like David Ball- Soft Cell and Andy Summers- Police who had an important role in the band but are underrated in my opinion.

Nick Rhodes and Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins) were the two that inspired me to get my synths and drum machine. However, I do not think you can compare Nick Rhodes to Tom Bailey, Alan Wilder or Howard Jones as a musician. I agree that he gets the perfect sound and adds the perfect touch to every Duran Duran song and without him they would lose their unique sound, but in every interview I have read with Nick Rhodes I hear him touting the non-musician notion that if it can’t be played with one finger it doesn’t follow their aesthetic. Most of these articles have appeared in Keyboard Magazine. I know he composed most of the Arcadia “So Red the Rose” album, which is fantastic, but I have never seen him sit down at a piano or any other keyboard and play anything that even hints at his level of competence the way the others I mentioned have. (I have to add that as much a I loved Alan Wilder In Depeche Mode and would pass out from excitement if I ever hear he’s back in, the constant dismissal of their music by so many since he’s gone is tired. They have not lost their edge and they still have not made a bad album, which brings me back to Duran Duran...) I love Duran Duran and have since I first heard them in 1982 when I was fifteen. Being a male Duran Duran was not easy then because they were “pretty” so everyone starts thinking I’m gay and much to my surprise....I was and am. However, it was always about the music for me. Music is much too important to me to reduce it to looks and partying. Roger was the only one who ever looked masculine and is also a fantastic musician. Of all the bands I still follow from my teenage years, Duran are the most frustrating. They never fail to come up with some great material, but they want so desperately to be popular (Nothing wrong with that) that they often release material that tries or be trendy rather than playing to their own very unique, fantastic sound. I have seen them live four times and the last time was the best. Hopefully, like Elton John and U2, they will continue to realize they never needed to change much to be great. P.S. Greg Hawkes from the Cars would be a great subject.

I only got into Duran Duran recently, but from my constant listening, I have always been pleasantly surprised. There are so many layers to their music, that it’s hard not to fall in love with. I get teased by my friends a little bit because there is a little bit of a stigma surrounding their music, but honestly, there is a level of musicality and poetry that makes their music very unique. Yes, they have some questionable songs out there. But overall, I think their music is timeless.

With describing the majestic beauty of The Chauffeur, you nail it (once again). It is somewhat a miniature musical in disguise of a 5 minute pop song! Really, really great art that doesn't happen in pop anymore.

I never thought ANYTHING about DD because my sister and her little friends were obsessed with them. So I figured they couldn't be any good. Not until... ALL SHE WANTS IS which was the single that didn't chart very well in the USA except in dance clubs, pretty much got zero commercial airplay. As soon as they were past their prime, then I warmed up to them a little bit. But All she wants is will always be a big favorite of mine.

I always knew Nick was the beating heart of Duran Duran. I was 12 in 82’ when Rio came out full blast on MTV and every guy I knew wanted to be Nick Rhodes. He just exuded a coolness not often seen in bands at that time. Plus, every girl was in love w him so all us boys wanted to be him.

I just said this to some friends Saturday, that Simon and Nick are the Heart & Soul of Duran Duran. Simon's Voice, and Nick's Synths & Atmosphere are what Really give the Band Their Unique Style and Sound. I Love John, Roger, and Andy, but as they have proved over the course of their Career, the Guitar, Bass, and Drums have been able to be filled by Other Artists, where Nobody has Ever stepped into Simon or Nick's Roles. Duran Duran are Still My Favorite Band of All Time and Always will be.

I've seen the technical aspect of how he got the sound and arpeggio for "Save A Prayer". That and his sounds on "The Chauffeur" are enough to rank NR up there as far as how to use a synth and realizing its capabilities and limitations. He knows what he is doing. He doesn't need to know Mixolydian minor 6th scales for DD's songs.

I agree with everything you said . Duran Duran is my favorite band and Mr Rhodes is a role model for me . That being said , you could add that Nick Rhodes on the live shows won't play a lot , but at the same time is like having a director/engineer on stage . Is not hypothetical that as you said , if anything goes wrong they all would turn to Nick ( have an unintended video of John going to Nick for some problem while in Dallas on the Paper Gods tour ) , and Roger has said that whenever he misses a beat , he knows Nick noticed and is looking at him . And definitely he's the coolest cat ( outside of Bowie ) , the super talented , eccentric and mysterious one in the back . Not many people can pull that out , and he does it like a super star .

So many things to talk about with Duran Duran. Loved Rhodes playing arpegiating Jupiter 8 on videos, swaying to the flanging waves! Looking moody too, but in a good way. To the shore, great almost harmonics come through from heavily phased synth, careless memories with direct arp to die for. Tel Aviv too, their most honest album to date. Thanks for the video. Would like you to get hold of a Jupiter 8 to show how it was used, or maybe some clips from a bands studio or live? Can wish I suppose

More than delighted to see a video of this in my feed. Before i found Depeche, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and others It was solely Nick Rhodes who inspired my passion for synths. He truly is a genius and such a talented Fairlight user, people struggled to learn how to use them and he mastered it based on the music he did with Simon in Arcadia. In all fairness Duran lost their real edge after guitarist Andy Taylor left, they are a very watered down version of them self despite being one of my favorite bands. Their 90s catalog is also very underrated with some incredible synth performances and programming on the likes of the albums Liberty and Pop Trash. Would LOVE some videos on Nine Inch Nails/Trent Reznor in the future too! :)

@@VaughnGeorge Thanks Vaughn. I subscribed to your channel. I can really relate to what you said about DD. I have been a fan of the group since 1983 I think? I still remember all of their MTV videos and I bought ALL of their music too including Arcadia and Power Station. I guess I will ALWAYS be a fan for life. haha I had THE BIGGEST crush on Simon. But now that they are older and I look back I am like how did I EVER miss how incredibly handsome Roger was? I guess I was just blinded by Simon's pretty face and amazing voice. lol But seriously now I can really see that it is Nick who is the heart of this band. My respect for the guy has shot through the roof after listening to so many of his interviews on KZbin. He REALLY is an eloquent guy. And "posh" but in a simply fantastic way. I have a love for him like I have never had before? I just wish now that I would have held onto some of the charcoal drawings that I did of him and Simon back when I was a teenager during the 80s. I could have literally made money off of both of them. But I thought I was getting older and needed to let go of the past. But as you get older you realize some of those things were what helped define and made you into the individual that you eventually became as an adult. Now I am kicking myself in the butt for throwing them away darn it! 🙄

Hi George thanks for the video. Duran have a unique and great sound. The structure of their early compositions owed a lot to Andy Taylor’s musician ship who has a solid understanding of song structure and timing .This allowed the band to hang their ideas hooks within that solid structure look at save a prayer , hungry like wolf and Girls on film . Most importantly added to that what Colin Thurston did to their sound was pure genius. Listen to their early songs pre and post Thurstons input it’s quite amazing. Lastly if you want to hear the piano played live with the band that enhanced their sound . Listen to the chorus of RIo played live in their 1982 UK tour played on stage by Andy Hamilton adds a lot of weight to the chorus with the vocal harmonies . Thanks for the video.
