I spent ten years as a music journalist. Unlike every other writer in the business, I always submitted my article to the artist for final approval before I turned it in. In ten years, John Taylor was the only artist who didn't request a single change. "Don't change a word!" he said. Easily the nicest person I ever interviewed.

At first I was wary of Duran Duran, a lot of us jr. high kids thought they were a pretty boy, teeny bopper band at best. Then I bought their tapes and started really listening, and I liked the song Please Please Tell Me Now, and Planet Earth in particular, so that cemented it. Went back and got the first album on cassette. Later when Rio came out, I would ride around with a friend of mine who was mainly more a Van Halen and metal fan, but he liked Duran, so we would ride around on our bikes with the boombox and the tape of Rio blasting. People would heckle us, but we could give a shit. You're gonna listen to My Own Way, and like it!!

Perfect opportunity to thank you John. Happened upon Duran Duran on TV in 1982 whilst killing time in a hotel room. Had been dabbling with bass up until then. Your bass playing and style instantly engaged me. Went home and traded my unplayable Precision copy for an Ibanez Blazer, shortened my strap to its smallest setting and started practicing the octave runs. Been playing bass ever since. I even dabbled with the old mullet style new romantic hair although you did me when you changed the purple fringe to white. Didn't leave the foil on long enough and mine came out pink. Thanks once again for being such a major positive influence on my life and opening the door to the pleasure that is playing the bass.

I watched a live performance of Planet Earth and never realised how funky a song it really is. My Mum, although being a music freak, disliked Duran Duran, but my friends all adored them and I could take them or leave them as a teenager. I wasn’t that girl who put posters all over her wall. Now I’m older, I hear Duran Duran’s music and ironically, I know all the words and the harmonies, but now I’m really appreciating the music itself and I love videos like this one as well as the interviews explaining the bands inspirations and formative years. The base line of this song is awesome, I love it, but shhhh, don’t tell my Mum 🤣

I've been just reading your book, man. Reached that playlist that Nick used to DJ and listened to it yesterday. What a grand life, great personality, full talent chest. Thank you for the memories. I wanted to be you and so became a good human.

Love seeing John Taylor, (my favorite,) besides Simon showing us how to play the Bass...my favorite instrument ever! I just love that Bass sound. My Dad sang in a band from when I was 12-18 and rehearsals were held at our house, and my boyfriend at the time I was 15. His dad was the Bass player, and he had started to teach me a little..cos I already knew guitar and I was loving it! Duran Duran came into the scene like 7 years later..I'm actually 63 just like you are, John now in 2022. Wow!! You guys are still as great as Ever! 🙌❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

So bloody happy I just came across this!!! I remember the very first time I saw and heard Planet Earth, it hit me like a locomotive. And I was sold on Duran Duran. I especially love the heavy base throughout the song. One of the rare songs that actually let the bass player lead! So bloody perfect. Still is. Always will be. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

I've always admired JT's ability to create distinctive basslines that merge his punk indie roots with funk. It's good to hear him confirm it.

His baselines and bass melodies are unlike anyone else. He’s a hell of a creative musician.

Just wonderful. I was 13 when Duran Duran came out. I just loved all about the band and the bass riffs that John played were amazing. It's just wonderful to hear from the man himself all about his technique and the stories behind each of Duran Duran masterful songs. Thank you John, thank you, thank you, thank you. You made this 54 year old kid happy for over 40 years!!! Keep it coming.
