Join 762 Media on our last video of the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad following train 266, 462 and 464 as they return from Cascade and Silverton during the afternoon and evening of June 21st 2024. The locomotives featured are 1928 built K-37 493 on train 266, 1969 built ALCO DL535s 103 and 101 on train 462, 1923 built K-28 476 light engine and K-36 480 on Train 464 which ended up being the last Silverton train for over a week because of a landslide that night. These services are seen at Three scenic locations in Durango and also traversing the Highline.
Then the next morning we travelled by bus from Durango to Grand Junction to rejoin the California Zephyr to continue the Great American Train Odyssey!
This 45 mile line was built by the Denver and Rio Grande Western in 1882 as 'The Silverton Branch' to serve the booming Silver mining industry around Silverton. However by the 1950s the Rio Grande found a new market as the mining revenue faltered, that being tourists. By 1981 the Rio Grande sold the line to a Florida Businessman and in the 40 years since then it has grown into one of the best Scenic Railroads in the World, with a world class fleet of locomotives and rolling stock, operating 3 times a day from May to October, along with limited times the rest of the year!
