Durango Derby | XC Rally Race

Last weekend I had the pleasure of filming the inaugural Durango Derby. This 4 -stage XC race took place on some of Durango's infamous town trails. This was raced in "rally" format, with neutralized transfers around town and 4 timed race stages, showcasing the varied terrain around this cycling mecca. This could be compared to an enduro event, the difference being the climbs as part of the stages were timed. Winning times were about 2.5 hours over the 40 plus mile route.
The goal for me was to film the lead group on some of the funner descent bits. I basically got to the top of each proper descent before the leaders due to the rally format. I was in shock at how fast these gents were riding on improper tires and miniature race bikes. Full respect! Jump on board as I chase eventual race winner, Howard Grotts, Ryan Standish, Payson McElveen, and Alex Green on some of Durango's finest. To be crystal clear, there is absolutely no way I could have hung with these guys on the ups, but we sure did have some fun on the downs. Legends, everyone who raced this event!

This format is what I wish more towns were able to do. Showcases the local trails, gets all ages and abilities involved, promotes a more relaxed vibe re "competition". WELL DONE DURANGO DERBY!!

Love my 150 Pike on my Stumpy and LOVE the town trails in Durango. Did you wear Lycra shorts???? Payson is freak endurance athlete. It is also interesting to see the POV on the different cornering techs between XC studs and trail/enduro riders that entered the race.

Durango is unreal. I wore lycra under my baggies.... Definitely some different cornering styles on display. None of them slow. And Yes, Payson is special.

The 4 stages added up to about 2.5 hours of racing. Equal amounts of vert climbing and descending.
