As filmmakers that live in Durban, we documented the collapse of our home town. In a three part mini episode titled - Durban Is Collapsing.
Filmed from 17th November - 2nd December 2022.
In collaboration with The Litterboom Project.
This is the full version.
As the province slides into a state of disrepair,
with thousands of litres of raw sewage running into our oceans and rivers, making our people sick. The state of our beaches filthy and litter strewn.
The municipality’s and governance of KZN have failed us.
With special thanks to all the contributors and people, who continue to expose the truth and fight for the preservation and believe in the potential of #OurDurban

The gravy train started when the British took everything. But of course "gravy train" and "state capture" and "corruption" can never be connected to Empires who got there by trading in slaves. No, they are still held up as the solution!

Durban is fast becoming dilapidated...it's not just the beaches. The state of our CBD, roads and residential areas is shocking. Regular monitoring and maintenance will prevent many of our present challenges, however, nobody in the positions of authority seem to be invested in it's upkeep and people in positions of authority are not held accountable. We have some of the best beaches in our beautiful country. If we, the people, join forces to fix the problem (and I believe we will step up and deliver) we will be enabling the present malpractices to continue. It's sad that future generations may not be able to enjoy the beauty of our country unless the people in positions of authority care deeply enough to just do what is required of them. Nothing more, nothing less. It does not have to be this way. It can be turned around!

I was in Durban in January 2020. I have traveled all over the world and i was the most uncomfortable in Durham of any place. It had nothing to do with polution. It was the cautions against crime that i got from EVERY local i interacted with. Actually the beach was one place my guide said i could go. Now i find out that even that was not safe. Durban needs to clean up environment AND crime.

It is really sad, being an ex-Durbanite seeing what has happened to a city where I as a young man who used to enjoy, freedom, and entertainment during the early seventies. Then there was order and respect for the environment and surroundings. Durban was Durban, unfortunately, the country has fallen into wasted rule, mismanagement and the excuses that are tabled are just appalling. You cannot get weaker than this. It stinks.

Yes, the city is collapsing, and yes the municipality is being run so badly, but who is doing the littering? The people of Durban. Who breaks glass everywhere, and throws bones everywhere, and pees all over? The people who live in Durban. Who breaks the dustbins and dumps rubbish all over? The people of Durban, that’s who. Who throws so much litter into the rivers and storm water drains? Who leaves rubbish all over the beach? The people who live in Durban do this. People can play the blame game all they like, but it’s the people who live here who have absolutely no pride in their environment. Why must people pick up after you all the time? We can moan about the municipality and the waste of our tax payer money but that’s not going to take away from the fact that Durbanites are causing the filth. Yes the municipality must clean up and fix the infrastructure and sewerage issues, but people need to take responsibility for their actions and the cleanliness of our city. We all have to do our bit or it’s not going to get better. Vote better as well Durbanites. Do your bit to help keep Durban clean.

It is not only the sewage released into the rivers by poorly run and managed sewage treatment plants, it is the failure of the municipality to collect refuse. The township residents dispose of their refuse wherever they can. This refuse lands up polluting the rivers. Illegal dumping, by the residents of the surrounding towns, in the bush and on farms is also a major problem. The laws need to be firmed up to prosecute these illegal dumpers.

Howzit : As a ( previously ) proud; dedicated Durbanite [ The City of my birth ] and a local Surfer for more than just a few decades; recent return visits have been nothing less than shocking ! The stench that is now the Umgeni River is beyond * Sad; * it is an utter travesty and disgrace ! Certainly; the April floods aggravated the total neglect by those elected officials / authorities whose responsibility is the upkeep of and / or the need to provide additional construction of infrastructure to cover the clearly evident; sustained increased rate of urbanisation. Unfortunately; this much appreciated but long overdue; no-holds barred video does not stress enough that these problems stretch back some 4-5 YEARS and despite what officials repeatedly proclaim; are surely NOT just the result of the scapegoat April 2022 KZN floods alone ! Over 2 YEARS ago; I submitted fotos of eThekwini Municipality employees pumping stinking effluent from inside of the Connaught Bridge / Umgeni River Sewerage Pumphose directly into the nearby stormwater drain that ultimately flowed directly into the river. These fotos were submitted to the once-esteemed; over-a-century old Durban morning newspaper; but due to the now well-known political bias of * New Management; * the expose' was never published. More and more around the Country; following years of no-consequence corruption; looting and blatant neglect; citizens who are already PAYING for related services; are having to pitch-in both physically and financially to secure the wellbeing of their community or region. My admiration for the endeavour of all concerned ( No matter the individual's status; politics or race ); cannot be stated enough. It is only these committed endeavours that will prevent the collapse .... And this is not that of Durban alone !

The term ‘Durban Poison’ seems to have taken on a new meaning. Cleaning up stuff like metals, plastic and glass should be fairly easy. The main issue mentioned here looks to be the running of sewage lines straight into the sea water. People coming in with the mentality to make off with shower taps doesn’t help the situation. With the cooperation of the community and associated officials, it is possible to establish an ongoing clean up campaign and restore the beach environment to what it should be. It will take time, but can be done.

This is the TAXI mentality of government, Get a new taxi. Ignore all the safety and operational guidelines. Stop and turn wherever you like because we can and do make the rules. Rules of the road , they not needed. A 12 Seater vehicle , no worry we can fit 20 people in , make more money. Even though the brakes and suspension can't handle the excess weight, no worry just add a trailer to slow it down and pack a few more in. Have a crash or two , no worry, just don't pay for tires, the smooth ones are still round, no problem. Get a few fines ignore it and riot when the vehicle is impounded. Promise to do better and fix the issue, Ignore everything and proceed as usual because who is going to stop us when we can repeat the cycle. This is the same with everything the ANC manages. Run it into the ground and only when its truly fucked and stuffed up. They come up with a brilliant solution of a few "We have challenges speech's and all is forgiven and forgotten" Our Government is not going to change and is not willing to. This is a case of denialism, until the bitter end because failure is not a word its White Monopoly Capital critique, elitism and bigotry causing the suffering of the people not the ANC.

Great effort, team!! We live in a little Midlands town in KZN, and we're currently fighting against the apathy of indifference and corruption. The surprising thing is since the roits of 2021, we've become far closer knit community (read into that a none BEE compliant community). Today, our little village is united across race barriers and is far more confident to take on the various guieses of our failed government. We're winning small, almost insignificant victories every month (wish it was every week), but we're making an impact. My point is you guys are legends don't give up the good fight.

Nice to say that the community must come together to fix this, so we need to dig deeper into our pockets and still pay rates and taxes for the government to sit back and enjoy watching us do their jobs. We need to come to an agreement to use our rates and taxes to pay contractors thats screened and passed by an independent company to fix up the infrastructure and then vote in our own maintenance team to upkeep it.

Absolutely, dry up the supply, but I can't see that happening. People stand together when there is fear being promulgated (lockdown as a case study). People in general will not stop paying taxes because they fear the repercussions more than the decay. It's an individual act which requires a leader before it can become viable. Withholding taxes is frowned upon by good meaning people even if the beneficiaries are corrupt.
