If you visit Kashi during the festival of Durga Puja, try to visit the famous Durga Bari located in the Bengali Tola area of Kashi. This Puja was started in the year 1767 ( 10 years after the Battle of Plassey and 90 years before the first war of Indian independence). There is an interesting story behind this Temple. In 1767 the Mukherjee family from Hooghly settled in Kashi and started the Durga Puja for the first time. When the day of Vijayadashami approached the devotees tried to lift the Durga Pratima from its place but to their shock the Pratima did not move an inch. That night Maa Durga appeared in the dream of the head of the family and told him not to immerse the idol since the pooja was done in the city of Kashi which is the earthly Abode of Lord Shiva. Since then the Durga Idol remained permanently in the temple and to the present day the worship has continued.

Shooting from the day of MAHALAYA till the last day of VISARJAN , we ourselves learn the rituals , the stories , the creation of the idols , the process of pooja and many more things . Thanku for this video to acknowledge our community in Kashi, Sir bengalis were time and again getting neglected in Kashi especially after a long time MLA of BJP from bengali Shyam Dev Ray Choudhury was denied a ticket, earlier they were threatened and now they are completely neglected. BHU had bengali professors, now due to scarcity of jobs Bengalis have left the eternal City.

@@AdityaSingh-jn9om yes sir there used to be a large population, because a lot of Sanskrit professors of that time used to study in Nawadwip (from where Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was & a seat of sanskrit learning) and come for professorship, even Bengali Language department of BHU is there from the beginning of the University and Mahila Vidyalaya because of the bengalis of Varanasi, Lahiri Mahashay, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and many important freedom fighters from banaras, musicians like Ravi shankar have been from Varanasi, 1st Durga Puja in Varanasi in idol form was started in private household of a bengali family and sarvajanik puja was started by Swami Pranavananda of Bharat Sewashram (another bengali Sadhu), a sizeable population of 1 lakh people was earlier estimated, that is the reason why Bengali Tola Intermediate college, CM Anglo Bengali college are all examples of Bengalis living in Varanasi.

kashi is still favorite destination of Bengalis along with Haridwar and Rishikesh and Puri , every Bengali atleast has once thought of settling in these areas, and in reality they did ,there is sizable population of Bengalis in all these places, Bengali emperors and rulers have always had special place for Kashi in the hearts they always patronized and protected Kashi , 64 ghat was developed by Rayshreshta Maharaj Pratapaditya of Jessore in 16 th or 17th century beginning, it is rather today many Bengalis have moved away from Kashi, all saints preferred Kashi and visited the sacred city be it Ramakrishna or Bamakhyapa baba, widows at that time were popularly sent to Kashi to spend rest of their lives in the city which can give moksha, Bengali proverbs are dedicated to Kashi, its extremely important to Bengalis be it in terms of social-cultural-historical-religious in every way unfortunately with rise of petty politics since last 70 years Bengalis have been neglected and have been losing prominence
