Thanks for the review! FWIW, about 90% of users sleep the same direction (rather than head to foot). One side does have more inward slope at their head while the other side has more inward slope at the feet, but normally those low corners are just gear storage anyways. The person with the low slope at their head slides down to have gear storage above their head, while the other person slides up to have gear storage at their feet. Then both people are out of the low areas and side by side. If someone is quite tall (e.g. 6'4") then it's best to put them on the side with more room at the head end. We only suggest sleeping opposite ways if both people are quite tall.

My husband and I sleep in the same direction in this tent. We got our hands on it during the most recent drop and have spent a handful of nights in it. As the one who sleeps with my head on the low slope side, I can confirm that it is perfectly comfortable. I sleep on a 3 inch pad with an inflatable pillow and I haven’t once felt that the netting is too close for comfort. When we retreated to the tent to wait out a rainstorm during an trip last week, we sat up inside facing one another with our heads in the peaks. But for sleeping, it works out just fine to face the same direction. Our experience to this point is that this tent is absolutely worth every bit of hype. We can’t wait to log even more nights in it.

@@kimbailey1754 Glad to hear it! It's nice how the diagonal ridgeline lets you sit further apart while both having good headroom. A lot of tents just have one high point where you're both competing for that same headroom.

Great to hear all the reports of people sleeping head-to-head! I did sleep more on the "low" end and it wasn't too bad for me. Good to know I can stick my vertically challenged girlfriend over there and it'll be spacious for her.

DD X-mid 1p owner who has multiple nights in it it’s a great tent. Obviously the smaller version but for what it doesn’t have on inside mesh space it makes up in tons of vestibule space. As far as set up and take down in rain the inner is able to be separated to keep it dry while under the fly. I also use an extra 4 stakes, 1 on each door and 1 for each of the included guylines. Thanks for review. Also DD is awesome and stands behind his gear always commented on drop with answers to questions and any other reputable forum that sold or reviewed his gear.

That’s what I was going to comment on. Yes it’s a great tent, but Dan is really what sold me on it. I read an interview with him and was shocked to hear he has a job! He seems to be constantly answering people’s questions and helping solve problems. I know it’s sold by Drop and now Amazon but it really like there is a person behind the product who thought it through and stands behind it.

On the flip side of the weather. Not snow but warm weather you can open both doors and have good ventilation and stay bug free inside with the inner tent. If you want to drop the inner tent , then use the outer tent as a tarp shelter. I have the X-Mid 1P which is great for solo camping. Especially the extra room inside for the backpack and gear.

Another great review Justin! I have the 1 person tent on my wish list and was wondering how it would go during Aussie Winters 🤭 and, well, your video of it set up in the Canadian Spring where it's still snowing, has well and truly blown away any concerns I had.😂🤣 I really like how it sets up and the fact that you don't need traditional tent poles, plus the bonus of having 2 vestibules as well, so you can have your gear on one side and use the other to get in and out. Love your work Justin. Cheers Mate.

I got the 1 person. Its epic. My friend was lucky enough to get the 2 person when they dropped. Its even more epic! I have been using mine since the fall and absolutely love it. Feels vintage yet spaced aged at the same time. Its really weird though. It always looks crooked. Makes my ocd a bit on edge. But once I got past that strange crookedness its sooo cool. It is worth the hype. 1 or two person is amazing. So easy to set up. And surprisingly very sturdy to winds and storms. Mine has been in some pretty good rain storms . Never leaked. Never drooped. I love it. Great tents for tall people as well, Which is extremely hard to find for the price! The 1 person is actually giant if you don't use the mesh. I was able to fit both my dogs , my gear and me in it as a shelter tent before the bugs came out. With the 2 person you could probably fit a small family under it without the mesh . Some don't like the gigantic footprint needed to place it but I kinda like it. Both tents looks small from the outside but feel like a palace once you are in em. For me and my friend these tents were a no brainer purchase. Quality Ultralight tents are usually like 500-1000 Canadian. I am happy to finally be able to afford a light tent that won't break my wallet and support a local Canadian hiker in the process. I was torn between this and the Lanshan 2 but once I heard the backstory to The Xmid and who made it, I figured I would spend a few bucks more and get it. Not once have I regretted my purchase. I hope he can make more of them and get them to the public. Even my hunting friends are jealous of mine. Everyone who see's it always asks about it. It always seems to be a conversation piece at camp. Which is a great thing. Dan Durston Xmid tents are worth the hype and then some.

Heck yea I had it in a 9 inch snow storm on bird mountain in Frozen Head State Park ( Tennessee ) this winter; not a hitch!!!! Had to cover my stakes with rocks and keep one vent closed to keep the snow from blowing in. It’s fairly light weight and compacts great!!!! I used all the tie outs especially the ones at the top of the poles, to keep it sturdy during the storm.

As far as the sleeping head to foot, my husband went with another six foot guy and they slept head to head no problem. I think you could sleep side by side with your girlfriend no problem. Pretty sure Dan and his wife do as well.

You're right, we do! Basically one "partner" will have a slightly more sloped ceiling in their face, but honestly, I always sleep with the sloping ceiling, with a dog at my feet, so that basically makes me over 6 feet long as far as space goes. If I didn't have a dog at my feet, I would just shuffle my body down further, or I could always put my dog at my head.

I've got this exact same tent and I have tested with 2 wide pads. I am tall and my partner is an average height woman; we slept head to head. With 2 wide pads there is not extra space on the sides but there is space for gear storage at the head, foot, and the vestibules, and gear pockets. I really like this tent. I want to get a Pro (dynema $$$) version too for an ultralight option.

I have the X-Mid 1P. I've used it it on snow and during snowfall. Those corner cordage only work in ideal spots. I've added 4 feet guylines using Andrew Skurka's method and it has been working really well. There is no way you can use snow stakes with those short lines that come with the tent. I will probably cut the line locs off this summer. The only downside for me is the inner mesh, which obviously droops, and decreases the useable space without touching the mesh. On the 1P you can hack a little and tie the outer door tieback to the inner mesh tieback loop. This pulls the inner mesh away and makes it roomier.

You can take a MSR snow stake that has the holes in the stake and tie a cord to it with a loop. Then get a small carabiner clip bury the snow stake then with the attached clip clip on to the fly cord. I learned that in Norway. They all do it ..it fast just unsnap the clip and your done

One small detail to note! I found it easy to sleep head to head next to my GF by staggering the sleeping footprint. Since I am taller, it made for a natural fit! All potential nitpicking aside for the 0.1% who care... thanks for the great video review! BTW, I absolutely love this ultralight backpacking two-person tent! Several extra ounces for me to carry and several extra ounces for my GF to carry the stove, fuel, and cookware since we are sharing resources (or vice versa)! Then it becomes a net weight savings for both of us. Backpacking can be a team activity by spreading the ounces (unless you are a true lone-wolf-solo backpacker and if you are, please share comments or a link for all of us to review!). Then we both save a few ounces! Looking forward to seeing some of you on the trails... somewhere at some point in time and space! Stay safe everyone!

Two things. 1. The head to foot thing is not a necessity. Does it mean that I have to crawl across my quilt to get to my door to get out? Yeah but that seems more a little annoyance. 2. As for the corner tie outs I think two things are involved there. First the tent was designed with thru-hiking in mind so snow stake compatibility likely wasn't on the radar. Next since the fly doesn't sag or stretch nearly as much as nylon you don't need as much adjustability to dial in the pitch as it sags more like you do with SilNylon.

I have the X-Mid 1P. I've only been able to test it out for a one-nighter so far, (stupid lockdowns in Ontario are never ending!) but I like it! Setting it up on frozen solid ground in Ontario on the Canadian Shield was tricky, but I got it done. It stayed up all night and I had no problem with condensation at all, even with a bit of sag in the walls. (Gotta love that Canadian Shield!) I'm looking forward to a few short weekend trips, plus a 2 week long distance hike later this year. The 1P weighs about 1/3 what my freestanding North Face 1P weighs. It is well worth the price. I wanted something well made, durable, that's going to last me a couple of decades (I'll update you 😉) and was not made in China. The X-Mid ticks all the right boxes. If I ever get a dog, I'll likely get a 2P. The 1P has no extra space. Unless I were to get a really little dog! 🐶😂

I have the X-Mid 1, it truly is a top-notch tent. Can't bring myself to go back to my free-standing tents at this point. The fact that I only need 4 stake points-for fly and inner combined-is a huge selling point. Since I solo backpack I don't have a need for the X-Mid 2 (I fit all my gear, including backpack and camera equipment, inside the inner of the X-Mid 1), but I'd get it for sure if I needed room for two. Oh, and Dan Durston is the ultimate customer relations man. He continues to take the time to engage (with class) in discussions about his tent. Scroll down, you'll most likely see him commenting here.

Thanks for the review - I was getting interested in this design. You seem to be the only person to mention the head to toe sleeping. That would be a deal breaker for me for the same reason you mentioned. I think the downside is the total footprint is pretty dang big. a bit bigger than the duplex which is my only knock on it. They have the dyneema version coming out when they're back in stock so that will be interesting.

On the way in I was using the Waymark Thru pack with the Brave Huron pack rolled up and strapped on behind the foam pad. I switched the packs up on the way out. I wanted to compare the two side by side on the same trip with the same load!

Considering this as a lightweight option for winter backpacking. I did order a mongar 2 which I will practice with for a while and see if I can handle winter camping lol.

I am looking at getting one for doing the Tour Mont Blanc. I have been through the Alps already and I don't want to rely on staying at the huts along the way. The weight and packed size of the tent is so little that it really shouldn't impact packing it. I want the 2 person over the 1 person, so I can use it when I have my dog with me. I have other camping tents, but nothing super lightweight. I have mountaineering tents in different configurations, weights and designs. The Direkt 2 tent I use for solo mountaineering just isn't water resistant enough to want to use it at lower elevations where it rains. It is nice to see you can use it in snow, but this video doesn't show the types of harsh weather you get while up on a mountain in exposed areas. I'd be interested in your thoughts of the tent if you have used it windy/rainy, harsh conditions. I am sold by the weight already, but no review I have seen shows how it performs in adverse conditions. I don't consider the snowy conditions in this video as being harsh or difficult at all, just cold.

I forgot to mention how cool your pack was too. went to the list to see what it was....that wasn't it...went to the other video....that wasn't it. Then the other. What I found was pretty much a different pack in every video. Justin...do you have a gear problem that you would like to discuss with the rest of us...before the intervention. I think it was a waymark...I'll look again but that yellow/black color is pretty cool.

This tent looks interesting. How well does it handle winds at 15ms? Must it be placed in a specific direction when it's windy like a tunnel tent?
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had it in crazy wind but you'd want to align the more sloped wall panels into the wind and not the more vertical wall panels.

Nice video Justin ! Question on the size, how is the length of the inner tent vs the Lanshan Pro? Not the spec but the real space available without touching the mesh. Important question for the tall guys. 😉
@JustinOutdoors
@JustinOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
The ends of the X-mid are more vertical due to the pole structure and make the functional space at the ends significantly more. There is probably also at least a few additional inches of actual space in the x-mid as well.

@@briteshikes5099 well, I am just under 5'10" so I really can say but I will tell you the way that the inner sits as compared to the fly, there is a lot of room in there I have a 82-in long pad and it doesn't hit the screen wall. I know that's not much help.

Can you tell me when/why you would use one over the other? I'm trying to decide between the them (not that I can actually purchase one)
@weekendadventuresontrail7920
@weekendadventuresontrail7920 3 жыл бұрын
@@PrimeReal so it depends on what your preference is. If you are good with a 25" wide sleeping area, keeping your gear in a vestibule and going solo: 1P. The 1P is honestly the one that I use the most. If you like to have your gear inside your tent with you, you're going with someone else and or you like the room to stretch out then go with the 2P The only issue with the 2P is you do need a large area to pitch it so it's not good for like stealthy camping between trees and whatnot and the 1P is barely enough for that that would be my only negative.
@PrimeReal
@PrimeReal 3 жыл бұрын
@@weekendadventuresontrail7920 thanks! I do not like my tent to be seen or have a large footprint but honestly the 1p is very very narrow. Decisions decisions (well.... not really cause they are sold out :) )

I purchased the Durston 1P in 2020 and have enjoyed it, but was more curious about your red gore-tex shell. What manufacturing brand is that, as it does not look familiar to me? Looks like the perfect size for you for layering. Finding a jacket that does not "wet" out at some point in time is hard to find, and since you seem to get the opportunity to test relatively new gear to the market................ so curious if that is a new brand/product arriving in the market and how effective it is in moisture control? Thanks.
