well.. ofc the interdimensional being we know as John Carmack was right, bunnyhop and strafejumping ended killing the genre (the mp part), also bunnyhop and strafe jumping in dusk is like 15x times easier to do than in quake

Might be a generational thing but bhopping is very much still a staple of source/gold source games. It only adds a minor edge (vs a necessity like in Quake) but it still seems to be a selling point for much of the player base, hence the persistence of surf maps.

It think with stuff like that you either design the game around it, like tribes or titanfall, or you make sure to squash it. Unintentional speedrunner tier movement tech is too janky, inconsistent, and usually plays poorly in envitons not outright designed for it.

​@@egoalter1276This exact problem is what killed an otherwise inspired and beautiful Source Tactical Shooter from 2014 called NeoTokyo. The Scout class in that game could bhop to ridiculous speed, and had access to an AWP-like rifle. This completely broke the tactics and turned the game into a twitch shooter. As a sidenote, the Soundtrack for that game is what got Ed Harrison the job that was making the Deus Ex Human Revolution Soundtrack.

When you are midair the horizontal axis is completely unlocked, you can do a flip by looking with your mouse. You can even land on your head and shoot a bit like that.

Unreal was influential in that....its basically proto Halo CE lol. So it inspired that basically No seriously Halo CE and Unreal are shockingly similar. I complere agree about classic Machine Guns, cause ARs and autonatic weapons in general in games get a lot of shit from boomer shooter fans for being boring or replacing shotties as the main weapon

7:51 This explaination is a core reason why the arena shooter died off. when you make a powerful and required mechanic hard to learn and use efficiently, it starts to drive players away when they can't compete on the same level. Newer players get stomped on multiplayer matches and dont have time to practice, while higher level players dont have enough balanced matchups to keep the game fun and competitive. If you REALLY want bunnyhopping in your game, you have to make it easier to input and accessible. Also, fantastic video.

Agreed. Unreal Tournament had a really elegant (easy to learn, hard to master) advanced movement mechanic, and it was as simple as just double tapping a direction key and quickly hop-dodging in that direction. In UT3 & UT4 it was even changed to a SHIFT key modifier so you could hold it down and the moment you hit a WSAD key you would dodge. It was also relatively balanced too, since main downsides to UT dodge was you decelerated at the end of it and advanced air control was almost completely non-existent. And since the movement range of a dodge was usually predictable, good players could line up rockets or hitscan shots if they could correctly guess where you would land.

i loved playing quake - with friends. Online i was the only guy who couldn't bunny jump, and it just wasn't fun for me. I think dusk is probably going to be the same. It makes me sad because, I love arena shooters - except for that. Great vid btw. I played almost none of the games dusk refers to so its nice to get a catalogue of all the references. Also you can kill anything with soap.

Strongly recommend to lower down saturation in video options for the maximum experience... and play first two pre-release versions. Just because they're like... different games, with different tone and different endings. First release is all about existential darkness and doom, Great World Conspiracy, the Great Filter and unexpected evolutionary resolution in action, second one is about wander and a little bit of hope, and the release is all about hope but, strangely, very reminiscent of End of Evangelion closer to the ending.

Kinda disagree on Quake shotgun - for some folks it's the best starting weapon from any titles from that old period. Rate of fire, accuracy, range... just good.
