You shoulda used 2.4GHZ. Its meant more for long range. 5.8 is used for close range in a dirty air environment.

Thanks for sharing the video, always great to see what others are doing with their P4 Pro :) I did a range test myself not too long ago... With direct line of sight and a fairly calm day, I managed 2.29 miles before I started to get my first weaker signal warning... Second test I trialed the $12 Sunnylife branded, copper insert, parabolic, range extender... I managed 3.8 Miles with that! - Both using 5.8ghz with no interference or loss of video. I never use 2.4ghz anymore!

These are really cool videos. I've watched a bunch of your range test videos now and I have to say, I'm kinda jealous lol. I built a TBS Discovery about 4 years ago with a DJI Naza-M V2 flight controller and anytime I tried to use the RTH function, the damn thing would fly to 200' and just hover there until the low battery forced it to descend. Absolutely terrifying lol.

Hi Dustin, Great Video as always! Not to sound like a broken record but as I have asked before with the Mavic Pro I (and I expect others) would like to see range testing from average ground level like you do at the park. Not everyone has a mountain to go up to fly their drones and it doesn't really show what to expect range wise for the average user. I think all of us would like to see real world range testing for all of the latest DJI products: Mavic Pro, Spark and the Phantom 4 Pro from somewhere like the park. Also testing for Max range you shouldn't use sport mode on any of them as it eats up so much more of the battery and really limits the range you could actually get out of them. As you stated when the P4P landed you had 36% battery left when you landed and 93% percent when you took off was 42% battery that wasn't actually used in flight. I really hope to see you do some more range testing with these birds if you have the time. I really enjoy all of your videos and appreciate all the hard work you put into them. Thanks!
@DustinDunnill
@DustinDunnill 7 жыл бұрын
+Mike Brooks thanks Mike. Main reason I don't really like to do range testing in the residential area is because I done feel it's safe flying over people, homes, businesses. Not to say I don't ever do it, but to work it into a review routine definitely ups the odds for an incident. That said, I do trust DJI products in the air but just the idea of it falling on a person or property in a failure still scares me.
@MrFittyTucker
@MrFittyTucker 7 жыл бұрын
+Dustin Dunnill I agree, I wouldn't want you to endanger anyone doing a range test but using a rural area such as you did in your hubsan 501S dual battery long range test would be excellent. Not trying to make extra work for you but I think a lot of people would be interested to see a real world test on the range of these birds and I would definitely trust a DJI product long before I would a hubsan. I think in that video you tried to demonstrate hubsan's famous "tumble of death" when not using gps to keep it stable. Just a suggestion if you have the time as I am sure a lot of potential DJI buyers would be very interested to see those videos. Thanks for all that you do for the RC community!

Wind direction can change from one area to another. It might be perfect where take off occurred but changes once the drone is, lets say, 1/2 mile away.

wow great video, really good. I laughed when you had to mute the review audio while someone decided to stop and chat to you, always the way!. But the return to home accuracy was amazing, even the way the drone decided to use the original orientation for landing, and lots of battery remaining. Thanks again, great review. You were very brave sending that monster of gold, way out to even 2 miles, knowing it's fate would be unknown.

I like how manufacturers sell products based on the extremes of what they can do, but legally they are limited to what you can do with it. A drone can only be flown within line of sight, but I CAN go 5 miles away, the speed limit is 55, but a Corvette CAN go 180 mph, a Big Mac had 1800 calories and 155 grams of fat, but the FDA says you can't eat that and live past 40... with all the rules and regulations, who wants to live past 40 anymore LOL.

Sebastian Asia 34mph is near max efficiency for the phantom 2, 17min flight, traveling 10mi.
@rebelforgod
@rebelforgod 6 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Asia 8km out, then 8km back, all at 56kph, for a 16min flight,( 0% battery on landing... Hard on the batteries, Program autolands to soon) I suggest, first a 4km(for +50% battery on landing), 6km(for +25% battery), then 7km, out & back Waypoint(for +12% battery on landing) Sounds like a quiet early-morning Waypoint test, using Auto-Launch, Bank to Turn, and Zero Loiter Time.
@rebelforgod
@rebelforgod 6 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Asia 35mph may be the most efficient speed for distance traveled. Fly faster than 35mph, and battery drains quicker than your speed, slower and you fly longer but don't go far.

That's kinda odd ... You get further distance with 5.8Ghz and the 2.4 is for penetrating barriers ... or at least that is the way WiFi is supposed to function. That's why 2.4Ghz travels further in your home than the 5.8 ... but it is slower than the 5.8. Odd ... Keep flying ... either way ... it doesn't matter how we get there and on which signal ... as long as we get there ... Happy Holidays!

Excellent work. I'm glad to hear you speak of the airspace situation. I'm a private pilot and we fly our drones in the same airspace light airplanes are operated in. 500 feet AGL is not low altitude. 100 feet is, but I know of guys who did that just for fun. And it's perfectly legal in class G airspace. Also I have had 3 near mid-airs that I know of. I didn't see a single one until the flashes of airplane zooming by. Pilots believe we don't have more mid-airs because of The Big Sky Theory: It's a big sky. Drones are changing the odds, and the feds know it. I had my first airplane encounter just last week. I was demonstrating RTH with a rookie flyer. Here trees are over 200' so my RTH altitude is 75m. A guy in a C-172 came scud running out of the pass the park is in. He was 300 to 400 feet AGL. Not even close, but a great teaching moment as I am new to drones. We need to fly smart or they'll take drones away. One last point. I'm an F-111 crew chief vet. That jet had a terrain following radar setting; "200 ft" "Hard Ride" and could go 800 mph down there. Lots of modern military acft do it now.

I miss my phantom 4 pro and the distance it could achieve. That being said, I’m glad I don’t have it anymore, because it was so unpredictable. It always had connection issues, but it had its great days, like over 4 miles (over 8 miles total) distance with a slightly congested area. Then at some times in the same area I couldn’t even get 1 mile and would have problems. There was just something with it that made me feel uncomfortable. It almost had a mind of it’s own. It felt clumsy and clunky and I didn’t want to fly it that much just because of the reliability and the dangers that could’ve happened. I crashed it once, no damage, but it was like a magnet into a tree branch. It was going to clear the branch no problem, but it went back towards it and hit it without me doing it. It was very strange. After that I sold it. 👍🏻👍🏻

To have an accurate AGL reading it would need a sensative radio altimeter which would probably be good only to about 20 to 30 feet off the ground since the sensor would have to be small and light enough to fit on the drone. So once you fly over a cliff the AGL reading wouldnt be accurate.

At 10:10, for that you would need local topographical maps of quite a high resolution. And to do live computation of AGL requires a built in conversion model. There would have to be specific maps for each region that the drones are sold in or available.

+Son Ero the more interference and LOS obstructions the shorter the range will be. I could do the test but it would be different in similar areas. The way I'm doing it here takes out the variables which would give consistent similar results in the country with good LOS. When you start adding obstructions and interference, the results will be more drastically inconsistent in similar situations. I do understand your point though. I can say from experience range would be much less.

Yes indeed my usual flight route elevation is opposite yours. I am down in a valley with tall evergreens around Home Point location. Been flying a Spark lately and lucky if I get 500m ...

Big reason I have the plus version. Noticed using any device such as smartphone tablet seems the go 4 app periodically does crash. Since I have the plus version basically comes with it's on screen attached to controller I have yet to experience any crash with the go 4 app. Good video tho

Nice video Dustin. I also like android better and now have a Galaxy Note 8 and it is by far the best android on the market. It has a very bright screen and even brighter than Crystal Sky according to a DJI employee at the DJI store here in Colorado. You might consider uograding.

Dustin just a question that has nothing to do with the drone just the atmosphere. When it is really humid and hot there do you ever sweat so much you sweat on your drones and your equipment and I have to wipe your face plus feel uncomfortable at times. I live in Texas and summertime is no time to fly a drone I cannot handle it. I just bought a Mavic pro two last year and I Mavic air two weeks ago and I have never flown them yet and I am paranoid to fly them in the heat. I have to fly out of Texas I guess. Wish I was there. Have fun you’re so good at what you do I’m so jealous. I have purchased so many batteries for both rounds all the fun things to put on them and the best lighting and just plain The best accessories. Several boxes of them still in boxes ready to be unpacked. All dressed up and nowhere to go. I sometimes wonder why I did this because I have such a problem in the heat that it scares me, Other things as well but someday I’m going to have to get over that. I might be flying across your way sometime real soon.

Yep! More than once. In the hot summers here in areas of no wind I sweat like crazy doing my reviews 😂. Man I've been to corpus Christi TX once when I was a teenager and it was like walking around in steaming sauna so I know what you mean.

In our country we can’t fly beyond line of sight so we aren’t able to verify maximum range of our P4P+ V2.0 . Still, we never lost connection while flying for a single second.

I’m lucky if I can get a 1/4 of a mile, without a transmission problem, signal loss or a disconnect issue! I can’t figure out what the problem is! Mostly farmland and trees, no big cities fore miles away! Need help! Great video!!

That Lightbridge technology is very impressive, however, I dont own a Phantom. Im interested in Lightbridge but what's the story with Phantoms and cracked motor mounts? Also, is there still a need to upload flight data and telemetry to DJI? That's a huge turn off to a potential purchase for me.

If you set precision landing on take off and set the RTH altitude at an altitude that is lower than the altitude of the ground when RTH is enacted, will the drone attempt to go down and crash into ground? For example, if you take off from valley and set RTH altitude at 400 feet or 120 metered, then fly up a mountain that is 5,000 feet high - and RTH begins, will the drone attempt to go down to the RTH elevation set at takeoff, crashes no into ground because the ground over which you are flying is any above the relative elevation of RTH set at takeoff? I suppose one could manually fly away from mountain and then manually execute RTH once again .....

You would have to have a radar altimeter in order to know altitude above the ground. Maybe someone is working on one small enough for drones?...
