Wahoo Roam user checking in. Agree about not being able to move the maps around but otherwise it’s solid. Definitely the Nokia brick of GPS LOL. I like the battery life, bigger screen and actually prefer that it’s NOT touchscreen.
@millardjk4 ай бұрын
Bolt v2 user here; same thought, but add that I always ride with my phone as well--in the jersey pocket, not on a mount--and when I need to "move a map around," I pull that out for reference. Not just because the Bolt won't do it, but because the screen is higher res and provides several different apps for map review.

Great vid! I went from 10 years of Garmin to Wahoo Roam. I’m so much happier. No more failed uploads and downloads. The Wahoo navigation is solid. My Garmin couldn’t even find my street address!?

That was probably a 10 year old device?
@billmaidment56232 жыл бұрын
@@teddytubey Garmin 1000 and 810. Regardless of age it should be able to find a residential address. Half of the time it dropped signal from the Garmin radar. And the interface is way more complicated than it needs to be. The Wahoo has a retro clunky design but works flawlessly

I’ve had the Karoo 2 for over 3 months and I charge it once a week, 200 miles and that’s with HR, power, speed and cadence. The updates come once a month. When I sync my routs I use my iPhone just log in to whatever website you use for routes copy link and paste, uploads in seconds. 🤷🏽♂️ so far it’s been amazing for me.

The simplicity of Wahoo also makes it for me by far the most functional. I truly can't be bothered with under-performing touch screens, particularly one-handed, whilst I'm riding, in the rain. The physical buttons rule!

@markianross2 жыл бұрын
Interesting - I have the Garmin 530 and the usability of the device is appalling without the touchscreen. The small buttons on either side are really hard to press, especially with gloves on. And the fact that they are on both sides means you have to be careful where you hold the device when pressing the buttons, because often you press the button on the opposite side by mistake. Really think it's something Garmin need to improve - Wahoo is much better with the large square buttons on the front - it's much easier to press down rather than sideways also.
@reidh2 жыл бұрын
@@markianross ah! That’s totally an issue. I’m sure people are aware but I’ll reiterate that in some reviews

It would be nice to have a button on the device, or a "big red button" in the UI that disables touch input for those rainy days. That's why I went with Wahoo for my first foray into bike computers after using my phone for a while.

I loved my Wahoo but the maps/directions were lacking. I switched to a Hammerhead and the routes and route correction are next level. Yes the battery does drain rather fast and syncing routes is a pain but you can do it from your phone. I paste in URLs from RWGPS but I hope this is something that can be improved with a future release. Also the hill climbing feature is awesome too
@jabrobbins2 жыл бұрын
Agree with Wahoo map complaint. When I get turned around I have to use my phone to navigate. That’s why I download my routes to my phone for offline use.
@mano212xei2 жыл бұрын
I disagree on the Karoo 2 needing a desktop to download routes? I’ve done this quite well from my phone. Both creating and finding created routes? Anyway, yes, the battery life could be improved upon. Waiting to see what the Suunto partnership yields. Garmin for sure makes a good product.

Garmin computers are pretty slick, I went to a Fenix watch to track my biking, swimming, hiking, indoor training etc... It's super versatile, always with me and battery life is incredible. Easy sync to Strava and Garmin's site after each ride automatically and as noted super simple to add your own routes on the fly. Great suggestion on the training content I have yet to try it too. Thanks for the video I know there are wahoo loyalists too that love the product, might need to try one day.
@gravelpack85362 жыл бұрын
Another great video I want to get the explorer 2 as I use my garmin like you do and have the non touch 530. One weird thing I haven’t seen any KZbinr cover is the difference on routes garmin vs rwgps for us gravel goons. If you take the exact same route put in garmin connect then load to unit. Then take rwgps route load to unit both by app. The garmin route will navigate much better. I am a Garmin fanboy but like collections in rwgps and my club has a club account. I find it really weird that the exact same route navigates so much better especially in gravel. Give it a shot and you will see what I mean.
@JamesShell2 жыл бұрын
Thank you DK! I roll with a Garmin 830. It works well enough, but I find on longer adventures I'm using my iPhone a lot (as long as there is service) to get more terrain detail and navigate faster around maps. My biggest issue with the 830 is the I need reading glasses to see it once there is no longer full sun, and the screen isn't really that bright. Mine is a few years old and I'm told the newer 830 screens are clearer and brighter. 830 has great battery life if run in battery saver mode.
@EverythingsBeenDone2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting points here! Can you zoom in on your 830? I am also quite sure that we can adjust the brightness of the device, I could be wrong?
@JamesShell2 жыл бұрын
@@EverythingsBeenDone Ha! Oops. Yes, I can increase the brightness. I ran across brightness during initial setup and was warned about battery life, so I kept it at auto and totally forgot about it 🤭I'll have to do some evening rides with the brightness cranked to compare battery life. Yes, I can zoom in, it's just not quite as good as my phone as you can imagine. I've found on adventure rides, where you are really out there for days at a time, it's nice to have both the Garmin and an app like Ride With GPS in your kit for redundancy.
@CR250noob952 жыл бұрын
My original post has disappeared but for what it's worth I love the Karoo 2. Big enough for the navigation to be useful and shows all the metrics I could want. Doesn't feel as polished and slick as the Garmins I've used in the past but I can live with that.

So I had a Garmin Edge 520, which was great in its day. I “upgraded” to the Edge 520 plus and it’s turned out to be a half-baked piece of garbage. Maps take forever to load and it’s constantly calculating. It can barely make it through a century in terms of the battery. But I think that there’s one underrated feature with Garmin that keeps me (and will continue to keep me) coming back, which is accident detection. I think it’s so clever and reassuring and I can’t understand why it isn’t an option on other head units.

Agreed, Garmin Connect to track all your activities and health related statistics from multiple devices plus syncing to almost everywhere else is an excellent way to go for a fairly comprehensive view of your training status and health. Wahoo is trying to get there with the Element Training app but they only have one watch and the bike computers. I think Garmin stands alone in this category. There may be better individual devices amongst the various manfactureres in each category but for the complete package, Garmin is it. With that said, Garmin is far from perfect...I have things I wish were different with all of my Garmin devices: Fenix 6, HRM, Rally power meter pedals, Edge 830, Varia radar, and Varia headlight. But, I don't regret any of those purchases.

Why aren't more manufacturers taking advantage of e ink technology to reduce weight and battery use? How often are you riding in the dark? All it would need is a small diffused overhead light, built into a weather hood/deflector to be used in the dark. Digital ink has come a long way in it's refresh rate and can even play video now. It would eliminate the problem of the sun being too bright and having to over illuminate an LCD in order to see it. Garmin! Chop chop! Garmin paperlight gps navigation using e ink! Let's go!!! :D

Garmin device software sucks big time. After a few updates it is bug ridden and has to be completely reset and configured again. I would only recommend Garmin devices that receive no further updates. And you can't disable virtual partner, which is a 2nd icon on the map easily confused with your own icon. It annoyed me every ride and led to missed turns. Sold my Edge 1040 Solar and got a Roam V2 for these reasons.
