I have a dust stopper and a dust deputy, and use them both almost daily, for interior remodeling. I definitely prefer the compactness of the dust stopper, but I think the dust deputy does a better job of filtering out the fine dust from drywall sanding or concrete grinding. I keep the dust stopper hooked to the table saw at all times, and use the dust deputy for everything else. Both are used with ridgid vacs running a pleated filter and a bag. Works great.... if that’s helpful for anyone.

Mr Orange: Brilliant observation...and I am the inventor of Dustopper. If you place a vacuum bag inside the host vacuum, you get all the low profile benefits of Dustopper (fast and easy to set up on a job site, not a tippy, etc.) and nearly all the ultra-fine particles will be captured before lodging in the vac's pleated filter. Technically speaking, the "cut point" of the Dust Deputy is a tiny bit better than Dustopper (that comment from the inventor should start a firestorm of commentary, BTW) and in most applications they perform about the same. One thing that cannot be argued is the simplicity of setup. Dustopper goes together in a snap, and usually can be put into operations faster than any other separator out there.

Best comp ever on KZbin ! I ran similar tests on a DD, Suning and the Dustopper. No real difference except for price. Vac used was a newer 6.5 HP HD . The one with the handle. With a Suning SN 50 -3 . no filter it flowed 140 CFM. With a new Clean Stream Filter and cyclone it dropped to 116 CFM . The Clean Stream filter as an area of 8 Square feet, The Stock filter has only about 5 square feet, It pays to up grade. The CFM numbers were obtained using Ansi/AMCA testing methods not an anemometer. These are worthless for testing on a duct work. The vac pulls up to 14 amps with no filter , hose or filter and drops to 12 amp loaded. The best on the market for a shop vac. I use this in my garage. Using the same dust over doesn't change the results much I found. There is such a small about of super fine dust in common saw dust that it doesn't effect the results . Some use dry plaster but I'm afraid to use that material. It can set up and ruin an expensive filter. Clean Stream recommends cleaning their filter with tap water. If that hit residual plaster dust? For our use getting close is good enough. As a comp, the industrial vac motor I use on my central vac is an Ametek Lamb vac motor model 122165-00 , 220 v./ 7.5 A, Single stage . $133 from Kleen Rite. You can get a 120 V model if you do not have 220v . Max SP is 110" vs 45 "for the Ridgid 6.5 Hp and CFM ranges up to 166 CFM. Loaded with 15-20 feet of 2" duct, two cyclones , filter and a 20' 2 hose " the CFM drops to about the same as the Ridgid 6.5, @116 CFM . However the Ridgid CFM falls to less then 35 CFM attached to the built in plumbing. You can build your own shop vac with this industrial motor and some creativity . As good as it is the Ridgid is not suitable for a built in system with long runs. Granger has certified AMCA fan curves on the Lamb motors. John, I like your cart so much I'm redoing my cart. Your a very clever guy. Do you have a big cyclone system?

I have the Dust Deputy and have used it for years and love it. This is the first time that I have seen the Dust Stopper, and so far I wouldn't have any problem with recommending it. The only category that it may lag behind the Dust Deputy in would be total capacity, as the DD can (and mine has) continued to work once the can is filled.

This is a very good video. One thing missing in the video is how they may perform differently when the collection buckets are 1/2 to 3/4 full. I would expect the Dust Deputy's performance would not change much because the cyclonic funnel and the bucket are in different compartments. On the other hand, I would expect the Duststopper's performance may be negatively impacted as the collection bin got full and the cyclone effect is impeded. As it got fuller, more dust would escape the cyclone and reach the vacuum cartridge and bin.
@JohnBuildsIt5 жыл бұрын
madcheme that would be a good comparison for sure! But as I use the dustopper in my shop every day(and fill it up) I haven’t noticed a difference aka still no dust in my vacuum. Thanks for watching!!
@oldarkie38805 жыл бұрын
The dust stopper cyclonic action is still in the top not the bucket.
@vincentrobinette15074 жыл бұрын
In this demonstration, he filled the bucket up more than 3/4 full, and there was very little in the 'shop vac' bucket. The cyclonic separation happens in the volute, rather than relying on the bucket, like a 'shop vac' does.

I saw your other video where you stacked the DustStopper on top of your vacuum. That got me leaning towards the DustStopper. This video just sealed the deal. I was figuring I would have to make a cart for the vacuum and dust collector to sit side by side. With your stacking method, you get to keep precious floor space.

That was a great comparison, thank you. I've been trying to decide which one of these to get, and this helped me make the decision. I really like the low profile design of the Dustopper, which will allow me to put it in a smaller cabinet along with the vac. Thank you for the demonstration and review. I am going to buy the DD as it seems to perform slightly better and will work on a larger waste bin. I don’t want to be limited to a standard 5 gallon bucket and with the Dustopper the capacity is reduced due to location of the baffle inside the waste bucket.

I agree. I have the DD mounted to a 20 gallon "Eagle" plastic tub with a clamp type retainer that I bought on Amazon. Works great with my shopvac; my only complaint is that if I use it with a 4" to 2.5" reducer from my dust collector the suction isn't very good. For my dust stopper I stacked two Home buckets on top of each other, now 10 gallon capacity bin. I put the lid on the bottom bucket, put the other bucket on top, drew a line around the bottom of the top bucket onto the lid on the bottom bucket. Cut out the lid, slid the top bucket into the bottom, siliconed and bolted all together. I also modified the dust stopper, glued in a plumbing coupler that goes from 2" to 4" the idea to reduce the air velocity leaving the bucket to reduce dust entering the vacuum (center of dust remover). The 2nd upp bucket also acts like a centrifugal collector. Added a wood barrier with a scoop on the bottom of the top bucket that catches dust to bottom bucket and idea to reduce airflow a dust kicked up out of the the bottom bucket...In practice that last item made little difference, have filled up to half the top bucket with dust, with no issues.
@CuriousKL3 жыл бұрын
I have the Duststopper. My reason for having it was to get around having to clean and/or replace the filter cartridge which is pricey. To me I never expected or need to create a clean room. I mostly attach a vacuum to a table saw, mitre saw, or circular saw to capture the dust as to reduce clean up. Then all I need to do is empty the 5 gallon bucket. I supposed if your shop is used wood finish projects then keeping the dust to the bare minimum is essential.

Great comparison of the two units. You did tests that were measurable and you didn't show any bias towards either one. My only suggestion would be that using two virgin filters would have been a little more scientific but you never claimed that it was anything more than a comparison. I own a Dust Deputy and there are a few flaws in the design that the Duststopper doesn't have: 1- A top heavy profile. 2- The top mounted hose which causes air flow restriction when the hose bends and, as another comment mentioned, adds height. 3- Adding on to #2, the top mounted hose puts strain on the unit and the seal on the bucket when it gets pulled on. The beauty of a shop vac is that you can take it to the job, whether it's the table saw, the trunk of the car or the sheetrock work in the bathroom. I have been known to trip over a hose now and then in those situations and not having to wonder if I broke the cyclone can get me back to work, after I pick my clumsy butt off the floor, that much sooner! Thanks again.

Concur with the positive comments about your presentation. I have a metal version of the DD but opted to spend a wad of cash on the Mini CV06. Both of these units are great to use with a power tool such as a sander but for general cleaning (and higher volume sawdust pile removal), will likely pick up a Dust Stopper from HD on my next trip. Any reduction of material into the "shop" vacuum chamber is a plus.

very good technical analysis, one thing I missed is what happens if you block the intake. I saw several implosions with the standard bucket. For that reason I used a plastic 60 liter barrel with a metal ring lock. It would still bend inwards (so I have to raise the hose from the ground to break the vacuum) but not break. You can set up a DD but not a Duststopper on that barrel.
@b-radg916 Жыл бұрын
I’ve seen someone put the bucket inside another bucket. I think as the inner one tries to suck in on one side, it needs expand out on another side, and the second bucket prevents that.

Great test, very thorough. You confirmed what I was thinking about these two. For me, it comes down to the 'form factor'. I'm just not a fan of that Dust Deputy tall tower configuration. It looks like it'd be tippy and awkward moving it on the job and storing it in the truck. The Duststopper is low and compact and easy to stow away. With near equal performance, the Duststopper looks like a winner to me, and it's a few bucks cheaper. For a permanent shop setup, the Deputy might rule the OK Corral, but for me it'll be the Duststopper. Thanks for putting in the work to put this question to rest.

Shalimar Rivera thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback! I know table saw dust collection is a huge topic, and there are dozens of good videos here on KZbin. I have fairly good collection on my saw, so I don’t have much experience to help. One thing you could do is google dust collection for your exact model of saw. That way you could see if there’s anyone that has a solution that you know will work easily for your saw.

This is brilliant.

The dust pile used for the dust stopper really wasn’t the same as the dust deputy because some of the fine dust was removed by the dust deputy. It probably doesn’t matter and in either case, I’d go with the dust stopper just based on cost.

During the manometer test the dust stopper sounded way way way louder. Did you notice this too?

Great job man!!!!! Generally, the topper is better in that it's compact and cheaper, in the end, the dust is collected and not in your lungs. If I were making mineral dust then perhaps the cone shape one would be worth the cumbersome price.

Thank you for this interesting test. It's a good idea to weigh the filter. Perhaps it would have been interesting to do the same test with different kinds of dust: plaster and concrete (which clog a filter in a few minutes usually) or metal filings and shavings, or animal hair...

I have used the dust stopper for a year now and all I have had to do is clean the filter out. Not wood shavings yet. It works great
