You should build a road drag and hook it up when you leave. Drop it off at the property edge, grab it on the way back etc... edit you could set it up as perpendicular bar with extra weight to cut road or chain it up diagonally no weight to kick large rocks off to the side.

13:14 Yep, I think, I mentioned it before: The plants which are already there are accustomed to the conditions and they are established. Therefore boosting them, should be one of the most efficient ways to increase biomass on the land. Pruning, using the cuts + dirt and rocks for very small and local water retention structures around the pruned plants, perhaps adding a can of water and a handful of activated charcoal + compost tea as a special present ... Around and especially above your existing water retention structures incl. the terraces and bath tubs would be ideal places to start with such improvements. And in the long run: All places which are high in the watershed and on which you are not going to built roads or terraces and which are to exposed to do active planting in the future there.

29:53. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT SUBSTRATE IS?! There are 3 things that you need to consider when working in an environment. The drainage layer, the sublayer, and the substrate. The substrate is the topsoil, where everything grows. You are in a desert, so your soil is very arid and not particularly nutrient dense. This is crucial because IT DOESN'T LOCK WATER. Locking water is the responsibility of the sublayer, the layer to which most plants will root. You need to find out the composition of this layer on your land because if it has too many rocks or is too arid, you aren't going to be locking moisture in the soil for the plants to get it. This is where you need to get moisture and nitrogen-affixing plants like Nootka Lupine (Lupinus nootkatensis), which are used in reforestation initiatives, particularly in desertified areas, because they have a deep root system that helps retain water in the soil and prevent erosion; they thrive in poor soils and under drought conditions; and their flowers attract pollinators, contributing to the rehabilitation of ecosystems. I don't recommend using it because it is invasive, but there are similar native plants that should be used as a first line of planting to reforest the zone.

If you ever break a key off again, just cut a sharpie case so it's a straight tube, fill it with grease, find a punch or socket/extension combo that fits in tight(need the extension to plug the socket hole) put it over the key cylinder, and smack the plunger in about in inch or two. The key stub will end up in the tube. Works great for getting pilot bearings out too.

Have you considered propagating plants by partially burying living branches? You bend down lower branches on desirable plants you and use a wire to get good soil contact and then cover it with more soil. Come back in several months (as it's winter) and check for roots. Ones with well established roots can be then pruned from the host plant and planted elsewhere. Another possibility is air layering for propagation. Look it up for more details...

Once the lock is out you could've just hot wired the dozer. It's a lot easier than people think on those old things. The lock is nothing else than two switches - one activates the ignition and the other turns the starter. The terminals on the back of the lock usually have numbers next to them, telling you which one's which. 30 is positive, 15 is ignition and 50 or X is starter. You sometimes have even more for accesories and stuff. All you need is two wires; one connects 30 and 15, the other is attached to 30 and you hold it against the 50 until the engine has started. Be careful not to touch the wires to anything metal once they are attached to 30, otherwise you'll create a short and will have a literal hot wire in your hands. I know this doesn't help right now, but learning basic electric and mechanic skills will save you a lot of time in the future. Since the lock is in a pretty awful position this might happen again someday.

if you pause your video at 14:52 , From your dog houses, if you walk down the hill until the ravine from the left hits the canyon right in front of you, (For lack of better terms), what would happen if you just filled in that intersection with dirt and rock until it made a big enough dam to hold the water from the ravine on the left? It looks like its inland enough to not mess with the river, and close enough to the beginning of the water collection when a storm comes that it may not have too much hydrostatic pressure. I feel like you might have a shot of containing a lot of water that could soak into the ground. Seems like you could probably build it in a day or two with your dozer once you get it up and running again. Would love to hear why this could or wouldn't work. Thanks

I would recommend learning to hotwire equipment like that. On an old dozer like that it probably would be very easy so you wouldn't be out of work that day then get a new lock cylinder next trip. Also, I grew up around guns and spent time in the USMC so I am comfortable hiking and carrying guns. It's a dangerous place out there and I would definately want to be able to defend myself, but at the same time, if your not comfortable with it, definately dont go armed. You will be worse off. However, especially if I was going to have family out there, I would say take some training classes and get prepared. Better to be trained and ready when you dont need to be than not be ready when you need to be.

I recommend you set up a tierd rock sifter so you can get rid of some of the larger rocks. Even just a few inches of not super rocky soil will help the plants grow better. I am in Utah and have been sifting mine with a 12" x 48" since my soil is super rocky and the places that have fewer large rocks do better. You could even build it so you could dump a load from the skid steer.

Shaun could get the water for his water truck from a fire hydrant in a Texas town. Watering acres of switchgrass would pay off because switchgrass is a perennial plant, has extensively long 10’ roots which eventually compost, it’s leaves fall off annually adding to compost, attracts wildlife which add manure, so it would be good to get volunteers, as many people want to help green up the environment to reduce global warming. Altogether, it is a worthwhile endeavor.

You're going to love that 4300. It's a beast. The insurance is pretty low on them, but the ride quality is going to beat you up a bit. Espeically when it comes to unimproved roads.. Pro-tip, you could easily have jumpered the wires on the back of the ignition switch and got the dozer started. Also, you're still far too focused on plants, and not terrain improvements and water retention. Get the water situation sorted first, nothing grows, and everything dies without water. Water also has this fun characteristic where it flows down hill.. You may have noticed... Your "dam" is at the lowest point, thats why water runs down the road you've built across it. Raise it up and crown it, or, make a large "speedbump" type structure right before your dam, and angle it so it diverts water coming down your road off into either the resivoir or downstream.

And another one would be to try to appeal to the big or incumbent companies for heavy machinery for sponsorship with actual support and equipment as your ranch present the bet environment for feedback and data for improvement. One other thing with the Dozer. Many "older" Diesel machines have oil sensors that will shut the engine off if it senses that there is no oil. This can be tricked into happening if you park on an angle, or drive down a step incline. If it shuts off.. Check oil. It comes down to where the sensors are located that will cause it to auto shut off if its a little low. . It's built in for safety so the engine doesn't get oil deprived.

After comparing dependability across brands and tiers, using consumer reports, reddit, Chevy, Toyota, dodge, and Ford forums... I chose Ford. which was the last brand I thought would be good for me. I'm not hauling near the weight you do. But, I've been full time out here in hudspeth for a year, no problems. I am very pleased with my truck. Just make sure you shop with diligence. Anyway, always good to see you and Brandon working hard.

A couple things to help you if this happens in the future. 1. The with they key broken off you could have pushed it in (so the key ridges engage the lock pins) and rotated it with a flat head screw driver. 2. (I am pretty sure) That dozer is old enough that the key controls 4 wires. Constant 12v from batteries, 12v to the fuel shutoff solenoid, 12v to starter solenoid, and a ground. You could Hotwire the 12v to the fuel solenoid wire, touch the starter wire to those 2 and it would crank and start. Then to shut down pull all the wires apart.

I had a key snap off that way once and managed to get it out by using superglue to reconnect the key sections. The hard part was not getting glue anywhere but on the broken key surface! And since the key was in a place where it could get bumped and broken I modified a piece of 2" PVC to put a guard around it on the side I'd bumped it from.

SCYTHE, Sean, SYTHE! If you get your hands on an old-fashioned SCYTHE, learn how best to swing it, and keep the blade SHARP, you may rarely every bother with a rented gas-powered weed-whacker for cutting back overgrowth. This 7000-yr.-old technology -- a good, sharp scythe blade -- and a bit of technique may be BETTER than a motorized thingy thang. Not sure how thick and tough your encroaching plant trunks are, but... If necessary, you could also carry a sharp hatchet or a small pruning saw, or a Silky (brand) type folding saw in a holster for the thickest stems that don't respond to your scythe. Love your channel, Sean! P.S.: I hope you'll consider again my suggestions some time ago about cultivating sumac trees to plant in your gullies. Just choose types of sumac that do best in dry climates, AND also the idea of large numbers of smaller earth dams in your gullies/washes, starting upland, and then, say, every 100 feet to slow the rush of floodwater EARLY and OFTEN before it gains destructive power. If you've addressed this concept before I'd love to know in which episode.
@Fipes
@Fipes 4 күн бұрын
If I may, I would like to agree and disagree with you at the same time. A scythe is a really nice thing, but from a certain age, the necessary movement is not so good. Is the brush cutter possibly a combi tool? I think a telescopic attachment with a chainsaw would be more suitable for these plants.
@johnenoch2874
@johnenoch2874 4 күн бұрын
A good point, in our day and age. Very few of us over age 45 get the kinds of regular workouts that would allow us to swing a scythe for an hour or two or more without later feeling pain. Also, it's very different to do that in 65-degree weather than at 100 degrees. It could be dangerous to do so for some people. But Shaun looks young enough and healthy enough to try. But perhaps I'd not suggest a scythe if Shaun had showed us the thickness of the things he was cutting back. I don't know how thick and tough they ae.

I am from Sudbury Canada, the trees were all cut down and industrial pollution made the soil too acidic for trees to regrow. In the 80s line and grass seed were spread, followed by native saplings. Now most areas have robust tree growth. I wonder if something like this would be the same situation there.

I did that to a car once. You should be able to cut away the sides of the lock cylinder and take the lock itself out. What remains will be a rotary switch that is the actual ignition. It should then just take a screwdriver to act like a key, although it may require a push and twist (depending on the anti-theft design). After that, any screwdriver is a key. If ever worried about theft, disconnecting the battery cable should help.

Shaun do you mind making a discord channel for us to give you ideas? And have you learned anything about terra preta it's a very long lasting highly fertile soil? You should transplant native plants next to beaver damn so that when the water comes they absorb it and grow. Orange peals have high concentration of N-P-K : once apon a time a man had 12,000 orange peals delivered to kill an invasive grass that was destroying a rainforest. Someone got worried about all the peals rotting and the man lost in court. 15 years later researchers from a university came out and found that the 12k lbs load made a forest grow like wild fire and killed the grass/boosting forest growth like the man planned ;}

Keep doing what your doing, you're learning valuable lessons that will be the gift that keeps giving. Collecting free seed when you can even if it's a small handful or even just a few, go to parks where there are trees collect seed that fall to the ground. and along road sides. Also free mulch when it's available and when you are going to and from the ranch consider the fuel your using may as well take a load. On Craigslist in my area i see free fire wood and sod things like that. Sod may not grow in that environment however it has nutrients and can act as a mulch with the grass and roots as it's breaking down. Cheap seed in in bulk when you can. You never know what may or may not grow until you try it. Fire wood keeps the ground shaded and soaks up water extending the moisture in the ground, consider loose brush piles you can scatter seed and it will shade it help hold moisture and what grows is future shade for other plants and mulch in the future. Earth as in nature is our best teacher and we can do some really lazy minded things to help create environments and let nature do the rest. Keep thinking outside the box. The one thing you can count on is how wasteful many people are and how much is thrown away. Great deal on your new to you truck. I look forward to your video's each week. I've already learned thing you have passed on in your video's and it's much appreciated and goes along with thing i already knew as well. Thank you Shaun ♥

That is why I said cattle confined & moved pen to pen & their are satellite collars for livestock now.
