I don't know if they were involved, but I do know that Martha was a huge fan of Dusty's. It's said that when she heard Springfield's first U.S. hit on the radio, Reeves thought Dusty was a black American singer and wondered why Motown hadn't signed her.

This is a little bit of revisionist history. There was staunch segregation in music halls and televisions shows in Great Britain at the time. Black artists were not played on radio stations, but redone versions by white artists were. It took a LONG time to change that. Yes, Dusty helped but things were still bad

Greatest blue eyed soulstress of all time duetting with Martha. What a joy to see this clip. Dusty Springfield was instrumental in introducing young european audiences to Motown and black R&B generally via her weekly TV show. It was just the leg up Berry Gordy needed and he and the artists at motown never looked back. Her music is revered by so many titans of black music and with good reason. They all recognised a kindred sister with soul whose once in a lifetime talents shone so brightly. Gone much too soon. Love you Dusty xx

Everytime I talk to people about what allies truly look like, I always tell the story of Dusty Springfield. She was an amazing singer and performer. She was so inspired by American soul/R&B and she knew the racial barriers made it a lot easier for her than the wonderful black performers. She fought segregated concert halls and she lifted up black performers every opportunity she got. If she could do it in the 60's, every white person can do it now

Berry Gordy had insisted Dusty do a duet with Diana Ross but held her guns and went ahead and due what she planned with Martha. It was a sad time for Martha; Gordy had told her that from now the Supremes would be treated as the top female group at Motown and the Vandellas second. Martha was appalled at the cruelty of it and the fact it wasn't necessary. Eventually she ended up hospitalized with emotional problems. She is such an intelligent, informed and articulate lady; no one deserved to be treated as she was.
@jackanthony9766 жыл бұрын
But the public always has the last word. The public still bought Martha and the Vandellas' records irregardless of what Gordy's small mind thought.

Many black music styles, black artists were appreciated and loved in UK before US. It is also said that UK working class could identify not only with African-American music, the lyrics of a lot of songs were appreciated too, and seemed to talk about their lives.
