She was not only an excellent singer but a very beautiful lady who knew how to dress with elegance and do her hair in a very sexy fashion. All of her songs are good to hear and now 54 years later they have passed the test of time.

Dusty was such a talent. The song is great; those were the days of good music and great performers. Too bad today's kids have nothing but smut, disgusting performers and "music" that IS NOT music. May Dusty be at peace in heaven. The '60s music was the best. Oh yeah.

A legend. The original queen of blue eyed soul. These songs were a sign of the times. Her stuff a few years later really showcased her vocal uniqueness and talents. The latter makeup and hairstyle choices were also her part of her personal style and a way to mask her personal struggles. She definitely did not receive the props she rightfully deserved as an artist.

On this day in 1964 {May 10th} Dusty Springfield performed "I Only Want to Be With You" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show’... This was her debut record on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and little over two months earlier on March 8th, 1964 it peaked at #12 {for 1 week} and it spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... On the same 'Sullivan' show she also performed "Stay Awhile"; the day before it was at #38 and that was its last day on the Top 100, and position #38 was also its peak position on the Top 100... Between 1964 and 1970 she, as a solo artist, had eighteen Top 100 records; with three making the Top 10, "Wishin' and Hopin'" {#6 in 1964}, "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" {#4 in 1966}, and "Son-of-a-Preacher Man" {#10 in 1969}... In 1988 on February 14th, in a duet with the Pet Shop Boys, she peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} with "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"; it was kept out of the top spot by "Seasons Change" by Expose and "Father Figure" by George Michael... Sadly, Ms. Springsfield, born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, passed away on March 2nd, 1999 at the young age of 59... May she R.I.P.

Before stereo, it was a great way to add more 'dimension', wasn't it? I guess, once other producers heard it, they soon worked out how to do something like it. As many Dusty songs were not Wall Of Sound style, I suppose this was sort of experimental. Dusty was a one-off all right, and a lovely person by all accounts.

This clip is a treasure. First off, this is perhaps my fave Dusty song but the interview is priceless and shows her TOTAL COOLNESS back in the day. An era when the US people, and we in the UK, were much more self-confident and sure of who we were. Folk were finding their voice in that time before PC came along and made us much less willing to be outspoken. There were just 3.2 billion people on the planet then and now there are 7.7 billions-little wonder that we now face problems from unfettered population growth (not taken seriously back in 1964 when I was just a young teen). Dusty spoke out bravely against racist apartheid in S. Africa at that time.
