I first heard this song as a teenager during a Dutch VPRO radio program (about a 100 years ago). That evening's transmission was dedicated to the theme of RAIN. There were more wonderfully atmospheric songs in this broadcast, including ‘Walking in the rain’ by Flash in the Pan, but 'I think it's gonna rain' went right through me that evening. It was only many years later that I discovered who had performed it, when I was curious about more work by Dusty Springfield (of whom I owned two compilation CDs in the meantime) and came across the song on KZbin. So glad to rediscover this gem! And Dusty… she was an outstanding singer, with an exceptional feel for the right compositions to match her voice.

One of her best recordings and her own favourite album track. The record works as a whole. The excellent Peter Knight arrangement and Dusty, I think, singing to the mood of the music rather than acting out the lyrics. I think this version is the definitive version of the song.

I just saw the Judy Collins version of this song from the Smothers Brothers show and while it could be argued that she might have a better voice for me there is no doubt that Dustys' interpretation is more soulful and heartfelt. She had that quality in spades which made her one very special person. Not to mention she made herself from almost nothing. Her story from a sad childhood to the heights of stardom and then her tragic decline into drugs and alcohol and early death is heartbreaking to me. Having said that she remains alive to many of us through her music that we are all lucky to share on KZbin.

Dusty had a special quality that allowed her to just sing a song in a way that conveyed a tremendous amount of feeling and she seems to just nail the songs she sings. There are numerous other versions of this song on You Tube all of which can't really even compare to the beauty and emotion evoked by Dusty's version including the following attempts by: Barbara Streisand, Judy Collins, Randy Newman ( no surprise there) Nora Jones, Nina Simone, Joe Cocker ( not bad) and Neil Diamond. Any doubters? Just play them and you will see for yourself.

David Franklin Not sure it's fair to call Randy Newman's version 'an attempt'. He wrote the song, after all!
@davidfranklin67279 жыл бұрын
+Paul Phillips Actually it is fair. Randy was a great songwriter but like Burt Bacharach a singer he was not. He knew it better than either of us.
@paulphillips91149 жыл бұрын
I saw Randy Newman live in about 1972. Unlike Burt Bacharach Randy brings something to his own songs that no-one else can. He knows where the humour is, what's ironic and what's not, and he knows when he's being sentimental. So his own versions of his own songs are always worth hearing - often more than the cover versions. Not knocking any of the cover versions (particularly Dusty's), but Randy never 'attempts' his own songs. He does them justice.

Let me offer this opinion: the song is not so much "very, very dark" as sad, bitter, and bittersweet; it is more universal than just "how we all treat the homeless." Nicely sung by Dusty, but listen to Randy Newman singing it--heartbreaking.

Yeah, just because the original intention was to be about the homeless doesn't mean that the song can't transcend to resonate with greater aspects of the human condition. That happens to all great art.

The words of some of the pieces of music of this era contained so much more information than the material that is passed off as music today. There are some good performers that exist today but what they sing about is crap. While it may be good for sales it does nothing that would add or define the present human condition. it appears that beauty has become subservient to gross sales of hackney product.

I agree that Dusty's version was far away the best. But it is best heard on her 1968 album Dusty Definitely, as the sound quality there is a million times better. This live version is musically similar, but the sound quality is comparatively poor, and in mono. But there is a lot to be said for Neil Diamond's later version, and songwriter Randy Newman's own version, although in general, he was a better writer than a singer. I think Dusty did the first good version. Previous versions by Judy Collins, Bobby Darin and Eric Burdon did not appeal to me at all. It sounds like it was written for Dusty.

This is not the best version. Dusty comes across as arch and theatrical, with an affected american southern accent. I see she has an army or worshippers here, but sorry Judy Collins did it better in 1966.
@alanellaway80669 жыл бұрын
Themanwhocameback2 Dusty's version is wonderful. You're entitled to prefer Judy Collins, but your comments are ludicrous, and inaccurate. The reasons Dusty has an "army of worshippers" obviously escape you, which is your loss.
@Themanwhocameback29 жыл бұрын
Alan Ellaway You Dusty Maniacs have gotta get a grip and a mind. No explanation why Dusty is so great, merely idiotic idolatry. This performance is mediocre camp.
@alanellaway80669 жыл бұрын
Themanwhocameback2 OK, some things go beyond words. A Great performance/ execution in any area- art, literature- acting, singing, sculpture, etc often has something indefinable about it. I saw Judy Collins in Concert in Florida quite a few years ago, and enjoyed her, and have bought albums and singles by her. I happen to prefer Dusty's version of this song, but I have no need to denigrate Judy's version. You could do with a little less arrogance and a LOT more respect. Dusty moved many people , I am one of them, I am sure Judy did also, why can't you live and let live?
