A beautiful song from a man who's lived a hard life and come out the other side. And while he often sings about his relationship with God (or lack of) in the end there's no question where he stands. His only fear seems to be if he'll live up to God's standard... like every man.

Heard Steve play @ Old St Pat's Church in Chicago in 1991 @ the annual block party, went early and got his autograph and pics! I lifted this from this broadcast since I recorded it on VHS and the Copperhead Road album had yet to be released. Saw him at The Cannery in Nashville shortly after this performance. His talent is so immense that he’s been successful in spite of himself. Dude can certainly write a song in 1st person.

There was a time when I stood at the edge of Francois Lake and wondered how long the man inside could the keep the man outside from dying, swimming amongst the ice floes. My career and marriage were crashing and burning all around me. I was knee deep in the ashes of all my plans and saw death as a sweet relief. A voice from right beside me said "...don't do anything crazy..." and I went on to write ten books, remarry for, now, 28 years, father 2 daughters that any man would be proud of, re-educate myself into a new profession and walk with "Nothing but a child" until He takes me home. This song should be memorized by every child of the Living God and when the football stadium is full of God's men, it should be roared into the sky, echoed down the unbelieving streets by every man's voice as He wipes away our tears, Nothing but a child.

I so agree. I'm not traditional about Christmas but this song explains it for me & makes it clear. Gotta admit I tear up a bit in a good way when I listen to this.

Every time I listen and especially when I see Steve sing it, I choke up. I find the lyrics incredibly profound and meaningful. I see each of my three kids faces and where we have all come over the years. Yes they are each a miracle and they have offered me redemption. It’s a bloody miracle.

This was my dad’s favorite Christmas song. He recorded this performance on the vcr and immediately wrote the words down and figured out his own particular guitar version of it and would sing and play it often, all year long. We even sang it together a couple times. Id give anything to do that one more time.

Best unknown Christmas Songs of all times. Merry Christmas one and all. And, remember, our future, present and past begins with the children. Jesus was but a Baby Boy when the Wise Men found him and were amazed that our savior was but a child in a manger. Remember, every Child is Special and Unique and a Blessing from God. Merry Christmas one and all, and let us all remember the Reason for the Season. Jerome Ennis.

Imagine the shock that came to the 3 wise men. What how can this be a baby is going to save us from our enemies? The whole time they'd been riding they must have imagined a warrior of great strength and stature would be waiting them to come greet him. And yet here, born in a barn alongside the critters, they had to be stunned. And what of Joseph who told the Angel he was wrong? What Joseph meant to say is that's not we've been taught by the Rabbi's. And Mary the handmaid of the Lord, the virgin, meaning uncorrupted by man. If they knew who she was they never would have spoke ill of her. But as it was written they hated her and wanted to destroy her child. If only they knew. The message of the Gospels is clear, become the child. Behold I stand at the door and knock. The way out is through the door. Behold the Kingdom is within. If anyone will have a part with me pick up your cross and get on with it what are you waiting for? To the woman at the well he said, I have a well too that once you drink from you'll never thirst again. You can make it if you try. There's only one true teacher and it's not the Rabbi's or any other men who claim they know the way.
