@@MrTekbow It doesn't matter if he did it or not. The point is to show situations where system fails. And by the way - he didn't make it just fine. He had to use a trick which is used for FWD cars, that is driving uphill on reverse gear.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers and did the situation fail? The first hill start you showed was when they were using trail and not snow mode. As soon as they went into snow mode, and kept the speed down, I.e. didn't just floor the gas, they moved off just fine. It also took off fine in normal mode. So the situation your demonstrating it failing in is when you use a mode that isn't supposed to be used in the snow, except you don't state that or show when it took off using the correct mode. That corner is featured in their vids a lot, and they made it up first go with momentum behind them. Face it, you've selectively edited the vid to make the AWD capabilities seem much worse than they are, and this car isn't even supposed to be a dedicated off roader, it certainly not marketed as such. It's AWD capability is meant to provide extra traction in heavier weather conditions ON road, which, on the basis of the original vid in its full form, it does very well. I wonder have the original vids creators seen your vid?

@@MrTekbow It doesn't matter what mode is chosen - there's a 5 hp electric motor at the rear which is not able to push the car by itself, not able to spin the wheels in certain situations which you see in the video. In the first situation, Rasto started in normal mode and after some wheelspin of front he made it. Then he reversed onto the same place but there was more ice now under front wheels - he tried in Trail mode and failed, car rolled back with only front wheels spinning forward. There's no excuse for such a behaviour of the system, both axles should be spinning, even if he couldn't move forward. Snow mode doesn't change a thing in operation of awd system, it only tempers the acceleration pedal. And one more time - it doesn't matter if he made it or not. What matters is that the system doesn't spin rear wheels and that's shown in other situations. I didn't edit the video - I only selected a few real situations from the video showing the weakness of the system. Watch some other example - Lexus UX 250h which uses the same system - and you will see exactly the same problems, rear doing effectively nothing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ7Yc3V3mrVlfZosi=c4vDW__W8U7oyFOk And when it comes to capabilities - why does it have TRAIL mode? To use it ON-ROAD? Furthermore - if you compare awd systems of hybrid Yaris Cross and non-hybrid Yaris Cross, you will see that the second one is way more capable due to different awd system and different modes, actually very good for light off road use. Face it: AWD-i of Yaris Cross is a helper, not a real awd system (some automotive journalists call it mild awd which I find accurate). Driving uphill on a reverse to make it work is not a solution.
@MrTekbow

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers what matters Is real world application and capability. You claim your roller test is as valid as a real world test, but the real world test clearly shows it has the capability to do what you claim it can't, and because of that, you edited out the bits of the original that show this. That and you're also trying to say it should be capable of doing things it's not designed to do. AWD isn't meant to be an alternate to full mechanical 4WD., and toyota doesn't market it this way. Let's face it, the Vitara AllGrip is a mechanical 4WD system but with smart digital management. You can't say a fork is supposed to be a knife and then criticise the fork when it doesn't do the job of a knife. That the Cross AWD manages to do what it does in those conditions is impressive given that it wasn't even designed to do those things. It performs much better than a 2WD apart from a short section where he employed the reversing trick. You're presenting it as if it's no more capable than a 2WD in those conditions which, from the original video, Clearly isn't the case. You've been dishonest, there's not really anything to argue.

@@MrTekbow I claim that rear axle of AWD-i system of Yaris Cross is not able to push the car by itself. Roller test shows it, real world tests show it. I never claimed it's no more capable then 2WD, that's your false statement about my opinion so it's not me being dishonest but you. I clearly said the system is a helper, mild awd. Be objective and go to Japanese tests comparing awd systems of hybrid and non-hybrids versions of Yaris Cross (which basically has the same awd system as mentioned Vitara and it performs similarly to Vitara), you will see the difference between AWD-i and ATS. Right in front of your eyes you can see the situations in which AWD-i spins only front wheels while rear is doing nothing. If you claim there are no such situations then again - who is dishonest?

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers it could because the rear drive motor can also work as generator. now to the video: I am still baffled at how bad this performs, I thought it’s the same system as in my RAV4 but this is just hilariously bad compared. Yesterday after three days of rain I took on a quite steep incline which is basically mud and grass with light tracks in it. I was quite certain I wouldn’t make it and would be forced to roll backwards half way up. Well I did stop halfway up because the RAV4 cut off power to an extent that it wouldn’t move on with more than like 2 to 3 km an hour and showed me messages of failing cruise control, VSC, TRAC or Uphill Help, sonar system and pre-collision system. to be honest by this time I also had dirt up on the front hood, windshield, side windows and roof 😊 good thing about this was when I tried to push on I had all of the engine power back and did make it up the incline. On top I wasn’t quite sure how to get down so I just continued on without knowing where I end up and about 50 to 100 m on the systems came back. Except I had no side view cameras because they were covered in dirt also 😂 thinking back about it it was quite a dumb idea pushing the car so hard but I’m quite happy I did it because it showed me the RAV4 can go over it limits and still get you out of such a bad situation. but I also know now that I need better tires with more grip

The current Vitara is an old-fashioned car (2015) with a facelift, but in terms of awd, it is one of the best, it has nothing to do with this fake awd. I have a Vitara AllGrip in the family, of course traction also depends on the tire but where a Vitara doesn't pass, it's better not to try with another traditional car/suv.

Which drive mode is used? If "normal", this makes sense but there should be "trail" and "snow" modes available. According to Toyota: "Trail mode can be used to help negotiate tricky situations where one or more of the wheels cannot grip the road surface, for example on very uneven ground. The AWD-i system will automatically brake any spinning wheels, directing drive force to those with grip. Snow mode tempers throttle response to help pull away securely from stationary or accelerate to maintain controllability when driving on snow or ice."

All other journalists were very satisfied with that car. Based by their false positive reviews I bought that car, then was very disappointed and after 7 month replaced that junk with Vitara. For me all known reviews describe Yaris Cross AWD-i as almost perfect car. But if I bought this Toyota, it would fly out of my garage within a week with supersonic speed :) If I will pay 2000 EUR for 4x4, then I want working 4x4, not some fake toy unable to rotate rear wheels even on the rollers. So again, big thank You for this realistic review of this car.

These are situations showing where the system may fail. All in all it is helping but it's probably the worst system on the market.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers yea it’s branded RVR in Canada, apparently in the GT trim we have the full panoramic sunroof with orange LED light stripes along the side, with also have the heated steering wheel, bilndspot monitoring, lane keep assist(just beeps at you when your out of lane), and detects when a pedestrian or vehicle drives behind you when reversing and ofc FCM standard. We also have the AWC badge whilst the outlander sport (In the USA) doesn’t have the panoramic sunroof nor the AWC badge in their top trim. There’s also some features in the top trim of the ASX that are missing the features we have in Canada like the heated steering wheel I’m pretty sure. USA offers the trail edition and ralliart but they are just disappointing because they have the low powered 2.0L and didn’t put the 2.4L. They also have the same amount of features as the lower trims. That’s pretty much my rant on this vehicle.

Are you guys driving this correctly? When a wheel begins to spin excessively and the spinning wheel is flashing orange on the dash, this means you need to apply the brakes and stop the excessive spinning, then apply the accelerator gently to engage the AWD system. This is a light AWD, not an extreme 4x4.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers This is an ultra efficient hybrid with a tiny electric motor driving the rear wheels and a very small battery. Its designed this way to prevent drivers from getting a wheel bogged in mud from excessive spinning. Its not ideal but I can understand the reasoning. It compromises efficiency over off road performance.

@@rodbender7946 We know very well what the system is. Rear axle is powered by a Q510 1MM electric motor, generating 3.9 kW (5.3 HP) and 52 Nm. It is simple induction motor (no energy recovery function like in Rav4 Hybrid), the amount of oil in the unit is ~1.3l, the weight of the unit is ~30 kg. The motor has two shafts/gearings with final ratio of 10,487. This should result in a rear axle torque at the level of ~545 Nm but rear axle on its own is not able to push the car. Even if only one front wheel loses traction, car needs help from traction control system. Under full throttle AWD-i system is always active up to ~40 km/h, up to 70 km/h it is active if slippage is detected. Non-hybrid Yaris Cross AWD uses traditional awd system with driveshaft and JTEKT electromagnetic coupling (ITCC), there are different driving modes - Mud&Sand and Rock&Dirt.
