Thank you for showing me that kit. Very helpful. I am also incredibly jealous of your RDR2 metal spit behind you. Wonderful stuff.

I prefer using Stainless Steel kit. I didn't know that there are mess kits out there in SS as most of the ones I come across are aluminum and I like having something a little more durable for cooking. My mess kit consists of a Stainless Steel US style canteen and Stainless Steel canteen cup with the proper folding handle (not the butterfly style). Got it from eBay for about $30, made in China but it does the job well and good value for money. Also carry a small SS pot with lid and handle that folds over the top of the lid to secure it down, more than enough space to make a stew or heat up canned food. Great video anyway, love the style.

I prefer stainless too, the Dutch mess tins are the only square mess tins in stainless, the rest (Aussie, Brit, French) were only made in alu; Dutch & US canteen cups were made in stainless, whereas French & Swiss are alu. So surplus gear in stainless is a bit limited for choices. Helikon make a great and not expensive version of the Czech army mess kit (which was alu), it's a nice design and practical. Some Swedish army mess kits were made in stainless too (apparently) but I haven't found one, I think they go for 3 figure sums. My ideal mess kit shapewise is the German -style kidney-shaped deep pot with frying pan lid, copied by Poland, Hungary, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania and I wish someone would make a set in stainless, I don't mind the extra weight.

@@simonh6371 now french using full stainless cup and mess tins , the mess tins is teflon coated ( the only one in the world, dont sticks )

@@casqueadrian Thanks for pointing that out, I stand corrected. Actually I had seen the new mess tins somewhere online and would quite like to buy some but they're pretty difficult to find
@casqueadrian4 жыл бұрын
@@simonh6371 you can find them on ebay , just have to use french words to the searchbar "gamelle armée française'' or ''gamelle armée française inox'' you will find them easily ( ~15 euros unexpensive and heavy duty )
@simonh63714 жыл бұрын
@@casqueadrian Thanks, yes I know the word gamelle, good idea to search using French language terms, although I'll have to pay a bit more for postage but worth it.

@@wulliescottishoutdoors Dug mine out last night because I never handed them back in when I left. I seem to have acquired two sets one dated 1977 the other 1945! , they don't differ a jot from each other only the wire handles on the older pair are a little thinner. Anyway a great video keep it up.
